Globalization wouldn't be possible in the first place if we didn't have a global language. Rather, it may be possible, but it'd take a whole lot longer, and we wouldn't be where we are today.
Also, for the most part, all I've learned in Social for the last ten grades of school is about the history of other nations.

I think the OP is frustrated by the fact non native english speakers have to speak english and when they do native english speakers bash them for their accent or bad spelling / grammar.
We never learned English because it's the easiest to learn. We learned it to communicate with the close minded landmass overseas because what we really needed were people to play games with, chat with and do shit with at any time of the day. Mainly do business with.
And as a small note for some of you:
If you're highly educated you will know multiple languages. But like OP said, 5 year olds all over the world know english words. They want to communicate with you. That's the whole point.
I am English and agree that it is one of the most complex languages there are. Most words have multiple meanings and interpretations for example. And technically the British Empire still exists, though we have some idiot as Prime Minister: Immigrants who traveled to America and Australia settled there, and though they like to think they are a seperate people altogether and have new words for things, the majority of Americans and Australians are actually English. So actually we still rule the majority of the world. :)

I live in England and most of the people I know at college are bilingual. One guy can speak English, Russian and French for some reason.
