Are you actually reading the stuff you are typing? You're saying that rather than taking the easy approach and learning one language, we should learn every language, which would entail learning English anyway.

This is pointless. If we all spoke different languages then there is no guarantee that a person you encounter will understand you. There is literally no reason for being multilingual other than 'it will be less boring'.
you guys are completely missing the point! And i wonder how many who posted in this thread have english as their first language.

Ok, so your point is that people shouldn't only speak english, but other languages as well?
you guys are completely missing the point! And i wonder how many who posted in this thread have english as their first language.
Tell us the thing we don't seem understand
QQ no one speaks my language.
you guys are completely missing the point! And i wonder how many who posted in this thread have english as their first language.
If you actually bothered making your point clear then we might have a chance at getting it, all you've said is "I think people should learn more than one language cos life would totally be more fun"
you guys are completely missing the point! And i wonder how many who posted in this thread have english as their first language.
Make a poll
you guys are completely missing the point! And i wonder how many who posted in this thread have english as their first language.
I speak 3 languages fluently and I learn 2 languages at school.
Still, I disagree with you.
Not all of us are shit at grammar.
I only know Arabic and English. If ever i need to learn another language, then i would.. with ease too :smug:.
But what use is learning another language if I'll probably not make much use of it? Other then being a party trick or what you crazy english kids call em'.
I think what the OP is trying to say is that rather than all of us learning one easy language so that we could all understand each other, we should spend half our life attempting to perfect hundreds of languages so that other people don't feel left out.
Your such a bunch of Minda's!
This is pointless. If we all spoke different languages then there is no guarantee that a person you encounter will understand you.
You're again, not getting it are you? That's the complete opposite of what you quoted
Person 1: Speaks French, German, Spanish, English, Danish and Mandarin
Person 2: Speaks Spanish, Swedish, Farsi, english, Finnish and Indian
So they will have trouble communicating right?
Well, just because i was born into an english speaking culture does NOT mean i dont want to learn another language! School forced me to 3 years of french, I hated it, not the language i wanted to learn!
As for my spelling, I spell phonetically. That means i spell things as they sound and not as the dictionary says. So i find the whole writing thing a little horrible at times.
(Oh and because of the phonetic spelling, it makes learning the written part of another language harder as well)
first rating on the page and it was a dumb -.-
This is irritating, because in Florida, it is required to of taken a language course.
If you are saying in America we all speak english, you are dead wrong.
GD is really butthurt about things this morning.
You think we only have learn 1 foreign language in germany? I learn english, latin , french and spanish.
Esperanto sounds like something I'd get at Starbucks.

Person 1: English, German
Person 2: English
Will the have a problem communicating?

So either way they both had to learn English.
If everyone knew 5 new languages, there's still a chance that you'd run into someone who can't understand a damn word you say because neither of you have a language in common. And even if they did odds are they wouldn't have mastered that particular language to the point where they can properly communicate what they're trying to say. And since the most wide-spread language (as in countries, not the amount of people who speak it) is English, it's a fail-safe that helps to ensure proper communication.
I heard somewhere that english is the language of trade or business or something.
I heard somewhere that english is the language of trade or business or something.
English/Mandarin is generally considered to be the business languages.
The OP clearly hasn't thought much about this. It's not because we are lazy - it's not like we got up one morning and thought "ooh, let's make everything English to make it easier for us" - it's just how civilisation has evolved. Face it; having a global language is the easiest option. Yes, it sucks for everyone else who doesn't have it as a native language but that's life. If tommorow the whole world stopped speaking other languages and just stuck to their own language the world would go into chaos.
Ps. I am learning German as a second language, even though I am British and I don't need to.
Why english? Why do we have to learn their language when they probably are clueless to what Esperanto is.
British Empire.
And i have heard of Esperanto, they use it in Red Dwarf =p
What's up with the "Britain owned most of the world" bullshit?
The British Empire only owned around 1/4 of Earth's landmass in 1922 (at its greatest extent).
1/4 != Most of the world
Does anyone know what a Minda is?
What other countries have come close to owning one quarter of the world.

Well, when you consider that that is one single country being in control of 1/4 of the Earth's landmass and then when you consider how many other countries there are, that certainly is a hell of a lot of the world.

It was one of the farthest-reaching empires in history, so English became more wide-spread because other countries across the world had trade routes and other such dealings with the British.
