It's odd seeing the jaegers in the day.
friendly reminder that Del Toro is not directing this, it's just some guy that's only directed a few episodes of TV shows (grand total of 7 episodes lol. tho he was also the creator of the Spartacus and Daredevil tv shows so I guess that's something at least). Just cause the first film pulled off the goofy fun aspect of it doesn't mean this will so yea, my optimism is pretty low.

Yeah, I'm curious because there was definitely Jaeger-on-Jaeger fighting. We definitely can see Kaiju-Jaeger hybrids in there, but they still have an organic aspect to them. [t]https://i.imgur.com/iYhzQAf.jpg[/t] But there were were also Jaeger's that definitely are not organic in a recognizable way fighting Jaegers. [t]https://i.imgur.com/LMYFFRd.jpg[/t] Further you've got this tiny scrap-metal thing tearing through a building and stomping on people, which certainly is out of character for our heroes. [t]https://i.imgur.com/b4ofEtN.jpg[/t] And this girl is in a bizarre rig and in the same posture as scrap-heap up there, and the shots we see of her in it show no other pilot: [t]https://i.imgur.com/jVYyjr1.jpg[/t] So quite possibly she's part of some form of underground organization rebelling against something in human society we haven't been informed on yet, possibly the PPDC, or else she is part of a terrorist organization. Evidently they've developed tech based off Jaegers to create smaller ones that don't have the same neural load and ergo don't need multiple pilots. Also right here Gypsy Avenger's blades are red like the hostile Jaeger's, not blue like they appear everywhere else. [t]https://i.imgur.com/xw7FmvA.png[/t] And we have these fuckers looking like Sentinels from the Matrix films: [t]https://i.imgur.com/0yv907J.jpg[/t] So all this in mind, I figure the battle with the four Jaegers against the massive Kaiju is the first act. Its defeated but the Jaegers are fucked up and possibly scuttled if they even survive, or at least Gypsy Avenger is. Act 2 we have the hybrid Kaiju-Jaegers showing up later, with the addition of the Sentinel things. The Sentinels are some form of like scavenger droid thing and they somehow reach the wreckage of Gypsy Avenger and drag it back to the Anteverse before the force is repelled. Alternately, either at the end of Act 1 or during Act 2 the Precursors managed to establish a foothold in our world somehow. Either way they come in to possession of Gypsy Avenger (or whatever the Red-Blade variant is going to be called. I'm suspecting Avenger is actually the name for the Blue-Blade variant, and the Red-Blade will have a different name.) The Precursors refit Gypsy in to the mystery hostile Jaeger for the third act, which is where their fight occurs. Orange-raincoat girl is either going to show up an an insurgent during Act 1 before the fight against the big Kaiju, or she'll take up being some weird insurgent at the end of Act 1 and during a time-skip, and in Act 2 she'll be stopped and brought in. While she is in custody she'll realize the threat of the Kaiju (during the scene that opens this trailer of her watching hybrids smashing shit) and by the third act she'll be on the hero team. Third possibility for her is she has somehow built her own and the opening involves her smashing out of the barn as they try to apprehend her, and sometime during Act 2 she'll join up. Either way that scene at the start is clearly her "epiphany" moment where she joins the heroes. Doing a bit of searching it seems they are calling that girl a "Jaeger-Hacker" So yeah I expect the big Kaiju to be Act 1, Hybrids are Act 2, and Mystery Jaeger is Act 3.
Looking at the picture, I'll admit it doesn't have as much "charm" to it that Pacific Rim 1 had, but as long as we still get to see some robot-on-monster violence with pretty looking explosions and a robot getting its shit kicked in with extremely visceral detail, I'll be satisfied. E: I'm thinking the weird orange Jaeger is meant to be a simulation of some kind. We see him twice in different environments, and when orange-gypsy gets gutted by blue-gypsy doing some weird sliding-slash there's people cheering and others putting down a tablet of sorts with this defeated "please kill me now" expression. Might be a hypothetical new design it's trying to compete against.
I'm cautious towards it. I'm hoping it'll have the same heart the first did and that this is just trailer-house meddling hurting it. But it just seems to lack the same feel from this trailer, it looks like its trying to be more generic high-speed action-shlock that doesn't really let you focus on anything happening on screen as-per the Transformers movies. The shot of scrap-bot for instance I swear I've seen used multiple times in the Transformers movies (At least up to 3, that was the last I watched.)
As long as we get to see big metal things punch big fleshy things I'll be happy
I think I'll prefer John Boyega as a main character over Riley McGenericgruffvoiceface
im hopeful for boyega's performance but im very cautious about the directing. the first movie was super forlorn and grimdark and thats what made it great -- humanity got too arrogant about what it could or could not do, and it took the biggest gamble in history to make sure humans ended up on top. sure, there was the standard goofy mecha tropes, but Del Toro executed them perfectly to make it hype and not cringe. When "SWORD" showed up in the theatres, practically everyone cheered. The old bots were clunky and slow, and even the "fastest" of them moved like an overweight boxer, which was good. It gave the battles weight, it gave each punch momentum, and they felt like legit clashes. These new bots are clearly a lot more agile and flexible, which makes me concerned -- you can easily lose the HUGE MECHA feeling when it just feels like a bunch of humans and monsters playing in a miniature city. It's going to take really good camerawork, really good music, and really good pacing to make this happen. Otherwise I'm giving Pacific Rim 2 maybe a 4/10 -- the first one was easily an 8/10 for me.
everything feels wrong to me so far. the jaegars are too streamlined for lack of a better word? they're very thin and fast moving compared to what jaegars were like in pc1. the suits the pilots wear look awful. some of the camera angles on people were super awful, dutch angles and zooming close ups galore. the weapon holograms for pilots feels weird. something about the city looks weird, like society jumped ahead by a 100 years, not what, 10?
somebody else on reddit put it in better terms for me. pacific rim had tanks, but in pacific rim 2 they turned the tanks into jets.
somebody else on reddit put it in better terms for me. pacific rim had tanks, but in pacific rim 2 they turned the tanks into jets.
They feel like power rangers. Pacific Rim ranks as one of my all time favorite films because. I'm scared for this one because it doesn't look like the director is taking the same precautions as the previous one did.
not looking all that great to be honest, far below the the original.
Still gonna watch it, I imagine the first will still be better, but as long as there's a good amount of fighting of Jaeger vs. Kaiju, I don't really give 2 shits about much else, I just love giant robots. Though I do admit, the style is a bit off.
Good to see you can now select the sword type weapons immediately, instead of hiding it behind two confirmation dialogs and a voice activation menu. The devs are listening to us.
It looks...okay? The new Jaegar designs are awful, everything looks like super sci-fi mechas fighting generic monsters, the old designs were big and clunky. It doesn't even make sense why they'd keep developing them after the war was over, as they had already shut down the Jaegar program during the first movie. The day-time fights aren't helping mask the problems with the CG, which the old film got around by having it be in the night and in the rain. I dunno, everything feels like it's trying to be twice as big and twice as "epic" as the first movie, without doing anything to feel earned. I understand I shouldn't be taking a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters too seriously, but the lack of good cinematography choices from the trailer (lack of scale being presented in most shots, fast camera movement, etc), the writing following the trend of "THE WAR HAS JUST BEGUN", "THE ANCIENT EVIL HAS AWOKEN AGAIN", QUIPS, it just feels bland, which is what I expect when Del Toro didn't return for the second film, and was replaced with somebody who's only work as a TV show from 7 years ago. I'll give it a shot, but it's showing signs of falling into the same pitfalls as many sequels do. I don't see it turning out well, but I'm not a time traveler. Edit: Oh yeah, blatant Chinese market pandering again. I haven't seen one good film that panders to the Chinese market outside of movies actually MADE in China.
is no one going to mention john boyega's fucken mustache

They're not making that mistake again. And I'm sure they all realized after the end of the first movie that one nuke wasn't going to wipe out an entire alien dimension. All they did was buy the Earth some time - enough for them to build up the Jaeger program before the Kaiju come back with a vengeance.
The only Jaeger design I'm not keen on is the main one, they shouldn't have based it so much around old Gypsy Dangers and just made a new one, because it looks like a cheap knockoff now compared to the other Jaegers in the trailer.
It feels like this is one step forward and two steps back. My biggest complaint with the first was that there wasn't enough Jaeger fighting, and all of the cool Jaegers died right off the bat when they had so much personality and hype. It seems like they addressed part of that but now (and also have better actors) but its just looks like pure schlock on par with summer blockbuster disaster movies.
The Jaegers look way too weightless, the best part of mech fights is when you can see the weight in every movement they make, when they punch the monster in the face and you can just feel the sheer weight in the punch like you just slammed a speeding train into their face. These Jaegers just look like they don't have any weight tied to them, its just not going to have any real impact as they run or punch. I'm really hoping that this is just how the trailer is showing things to try and seem more fast and actiony. Making giant mechs move as fast and as agile as a human is one of the most disappointing things you can do for me. I love mech stuff and I liked the 1st movie so if it looks any better near release I'll probably still go see it.
I don't even care about the music choice a fucking Pacific Rim sequel is coming! John Boyega looks great! Mako is back fuck yes! Giant robots and kaiju punching each other fuck yes! Not to mention it's something new, not different. Something that 90% of action movies fail to uphold. Hell even if it gets mediocre ratings it'll still outperform fucking Trashformers 5 in my eyes. I just realized that this movie's gonna compete against The Bumblebee Movie. FUCK NO.
It doesnt have soul, thats for freaking sure but it does look pretty rad so im game. This is clearly an attempt to maximize profits.
It looks just like any Bayformer movie. I'd rather just rewatch the first one.
