I don't even know if this is the right NieR. Is it a prequel? Sequel? The plot blurb isn't clear, but it doesn't sound like the ole philosophical zombie that was the original.
From the sounds of things, knowing the story to the previous game will make the new game even more confusing than if you'd gone in fresh. Because Yoko Taro.

Aside from Drakengard 2, every game is linked only by Yoko Taro's madness.
NieR is a fucking weird ass game.
Drakengard is even more weird. Especially if you play through all the endings and watch the entire story unfold and understand how everyone is fucked up. Your crew consists of some dude who fucks his sister and loves killing everything including kids, a knight who touches little boys, and lady who cannibalizes children.
I own Drakengard 1, but I just can't get past the gameplay. It seems up my alley in almost every other way. NieR, however, I have beaten numerous times.

His sister wanted to fuck him, and his rejection of her is a major part of her character arc. Caim's entire character can be summed up as "prince of a dead kingdom whose sole reason to live is to kill as many people as humanly possible before dying".

It kinda has its own plot but it's set many years after the events of NieR and will include many references and continuity nods to NieR, and even some for Drakengard 3. Plus, some characters from the original NieR are stated to be returning in Automata, such as [sp]Emil.[/sp]
I've been hearing everywhere that Nier is super good and I plan on getting it at some point to try it out, but can someone explain to me without spoilers why it's so loved? As far as I know, it's mainly because of the soundtrack and the fact that NG+ changes stuff in the story or something? Also do I need to know Drakengard's story to understand Nier?

Bullet hell bosses, homages to other genres, beautiful art style and world (with awful graphics), weird characters that are fantastically written, and every little thing in between. Literally my ONLY complaint with the game is the combat which falls short outside of the ridiculous bosses. Also the OST is one of the best in gaming.

When it comes to story and characters, I personally liked them a lot on my first playthrough, but I still wished to know more about them. That's where multiple (and less tedious) playthroughs come in, and you start piecing together everything and it comes to some really big "holy shit" moments. Not to mention the writing for the character dialogue and the English voice acting are superb, and really make the characters come to life. The gameplay isn't some jaw-dropping spectacle, but it's not bad, either. It could use more polish but it makes up for it by introducing some neat concepts, such as the wide variety of spells you can use. Sure, they may sound generic by being named "Dark ___" but the ways in which they work offer up a lot of fun ways to take down foes, so it's ok in my book. Plus the game has some different segments here and there to keep things fresh, such as side-scrolling platform sections and overhead Diablo-esque camera views that almost make you feel like you're playing a different game, but at the same time it still keeps things familiar. The most you'll need to know about Drakengard 1 is its Ending E, since it's basically what causes the events of NieR to happen.

Like, c'mon. You can pick ANY song off that OST and it is great in both the context of the game and as a stand alone composition.
The controls looked like they felt tight. Never even heard of this series before but I'm now interested.
Giant theatrical robot maiden AND Platinum? I need it

I still don't remember what the fuck was happening. Actually the only thing I remember from Drakengard 1 was the first battle in the desert/castle area. I don't remember shit after that.
Why do they keep letting him write things? I don't really mean that in a bad way either, how did no one after Drakengard go "Dude what the fuck?" It's a lot of faith to put in someone who writes complete nonsense every time he makes a game
I played Drakengard when I was young because it had dragons and dragons were the coolest shit when you're 12, I didn't expect such a hardcore fucked up story :v: Also is this going to be Co-Op? It seems weird to have an NPC companion with the same move set be there

Co-op would be really neat in a Platinum game though.
