To be honest, I don't really care about Christopher Columbus. All I care about is that he gives me a day off from school.
The main thing about it is that it occurred centuries ago. Nobody really gives a shit unless they like reading history. Give it some more time and the fad will die on its own.

I suppose the closest I can get as an Englishman to this situation is if we were to hold an Oliver Cromwell day. Personally I was a fan of Cromwell's republic, but he was an unbelievable asshole to the Irish and the Catholics, and there's no ignoring that. I think if I tried to have a Cromwell day, it wouldn't go down well.

I think Americans invented Columbus day because it's the same day as Canadian thanksgiving, and they didn't want Canada having more holidays than them. I mean honestly, America has so many holidays that seem like some made-up bullshit on the exact same day as Canadian holidays, I just think the US government was jealous of our holidays and wanted some of their own on that same day.

I don't think the american government made this holiday for the sole reason of spiting Canadians and not allowing them to have an extra day off school and work.
I'm fine with it being a holiday, we get it off, so why the heck not?
