Do you think if I took it out of the frame it'll have the date written on the back?
I have no idea on these kind of matters, but why not check it anyways? what harm could be possibly done to the painting if you do it carefully. Don't trust me tho, I tell you I've no idea on these things and something could horribly go wrong too.
That's a badass painting.
Can you give out the full name, or would that be going over the top for you?

Donate it to a museum
That's a Necron from Warhammer 40k.
Though it definitely looks like a necron, I doubt 40K existed 43 years ago Came around in the eighties, didn't it?
In 40k, the necrons existed long before any race-- Oh no. :byodood:
I want to believe.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=99120110001 Don't worry there's only 12 necron warriors in a pack, we got this. Let them come. :clint:
regardless of the fact your mum's dead mate was either bullshitting when he wrote the date on the canvas or it's an old frame/canvas and the fact he just copied an existing design... what a fucking horrible painting. horrible colours, horrible forms.
go ask the painter
go ask the painter
He's dead.
Shogoll beat me to it. 1968 > 1998. This did not influence the design of the Necron, the guy was probably batshit crazy in the worst way, the "I like that, Im going to redo it and call it mine" kind of crazy.
How do you redo something that doesn't exist yet.
By slapping the shit out of lame trolls. Just kidding. But seriously.
Sort of looks like the 8 may have faded or was written hastily and is now a 6, no idea though, what's just as abnormal is that he never owned a computer or a television (from since my mum has known him) so how he knew about the warhammer necron is strange.
Well Doctor, I think you found one of your future buddies' paintings!
[sp]Reused canvas[/sp]
so a he designed the necrons from an acid trip b he crayoned 1968 onto a canvas
Maybe this was his last act of trolling before he died. Maybe he knew somehow (from the visit to your house, or through your mum or something) that you liked Warhammer 40K, and he knew he was going to die, so he thought it'd be a laugh to paint a Necron for you and label it as having been done before Necrons, or even Warhammer had been invented - just to fuck with you.

OP had no prior knowledge of Necrons.
OP does not like Warhammer. OP had no prior knowledge of Necrons.
You sure?
It's most likely the canvas that is from 1968 or 1988 whatever it says, the bit it's written on is the spongy wood stuff that looks like it'd be on the frame to keep the painting rigid, it's pretty clear it's a necron though which is actually quite cool considering I thought it was just some random alien, but it turns out it's part of one of my favorite franchises.

You sure?
No. I fucked up. Read that last part as something along the lines of "but it turns out it's part of a favorited franchise." Don't ask.
I wonder if there's an erotic secret letter or money hidden inside it
No, you guys got it all wrong, it's the Cremator from HL2!
Where's that haunted painting one, where that guy committed suicide after, some guy brought it, some Doctor someone, and received creepy things in his home, about shadowy figures in in bedroom.
It's haunted.
That thing doesn't look anything like me!
Looks cool.
OP, why do you have 2 identical lamps beside eachother?

That painting is quite a mystery it seems. Not something I'd put on my wall, but it sure is interesting. As mentioned earlier it could be a reused canvas, maybe Mona Lisa is hiding behind the Necron!
Throw the painting away, Seriously that's one of the creepiest paintings I've ever seen & as that other guy said... " This is how horror movies start "
