I hate it when people just steal your stuff. Today, someone stole my macbook pro i got from my school, I am so pissed right now :suicide:
The use of weapons, and force (lethal or non lethal) should always be the last line of defence in any case. People usually confuse self-defence with fighting and most of the times that's the idea martial arts and gun nuts give to people through marketing - that you have to fight to win. Disregarding what it implies in the long run. False. You should only fight to survive. Ok, so in the gym you're training ninja commando moves , learning to break every bone of your opponent. You have gloves, you have protections, you're a hardcore killing machine to whoever messes with you. Now put yourself in the same situation in a bar, using civilian clothes with people watching and cameras filming and what everybody sees is a fight, an assault. And fighting is illegal. When you're fighting to win you're impulsed by ego and the need to prove yourself in battle and that works quite well in the ring and that's one of the main reasons why most martial artists trash talk defence systems and military systems such as systema, krav maga, etc. Fighting to survive is a whole new thing called self defence. Sometimes it means run for your live, sometimes means to appease with words, other times means kick in the balls and run for it, and other times mean neutralize the threat fast. It involves discipline and previous knowledge of what you're getting into, of evaluations and consciousness of the consequences of jumping in contact with an aggressor. However the main goal behind self defense is to live to see another day the easiest way.

Martial arts is about self discipline and using your art as a last resort. Most commercials you see to "learn" martial arts is usually some gung-ho idiot who is going to half ass tech you just for your wad of cash.
My bike was stolen once. I miss that bike.
Oh yeah, same thing happened to me, 3 years later I saw the same bike at my neighbor's garage.

Martial arts were primarily designed as mechanisms of war and self defence. Nowadays most people see them as sport and competition where the important thing is winning your opponent. Problem is when you find yourself searching for a martial art of your choosing, let's say karate, every MacDojo out there is going to try to boost your confidence by making you feel you'll become a fucking ninja commando and that you'll learn to fight and learn how to kick the crap out of someone real fast and without much work. just a few tae kwondo kicks and jiu jitsu crap and they call it Krav Maga for example when it's not! Yes, there used to be a time when It would be easy for someone to go to a dojo and be taught proper self defence and martial arts with that exact same philosophy. However nowadays it's depends much of who's teaching you.
Do you guys have any suggestions regarding a martial art (aka best for close-quarters self defense)?
Potential usefullness of "martial arts" is along with the effectiveness the legal safety, especially with the less hardcore varieties. If you punch someone hard, or even worse, bash him with something like a baseball bat, it can cause severe harm or even death. Even if you just manage to knock someone down he may hit his head while falling and (unless you have some amazing explanations) you can end up in prison or atleast in serious legal trouble yourself. If you are experienced in martial arts you may be able to control the situation better to avoid "accidents" like this.
Do you guys have any suggestions regarding a martial art (aka best for close-quarters self defense)?
Depends on what you're looking for and if you want more than fighting "bad guys". Self defence, competition, sport, self-defence & competition? If you're looking for daily basis self defence, for example, if you get jumped by a group I wouldn't advise grappling based martial arts for example. What are you looking for exactly?
I've spent 5 years training in jujitsu, and even then I can tell you from experience that the best form of self defence is running away, even if it means plowing through your attackers. If that doesn't work, a fake wallet full of old giftcards and receipts can keep people busy long enough to escape. And if THAT doesn't work? Well, then that's where martial arts experience comes into play. Thankfully, by using the first two options I've managed to avoid that; and trust me, you'd probably want to, seeing as the law has a funny way of interpreting "self defence" here in England.
In Portugal police tend to look away sometimes. They usually see people by the profile. In my case they saw that I was a student and they where kids from the hoods. So they easily assumed who was assaulting who. I told them I was in Krav Maga and asked them if it wasn't illegal to use it. They just said "Look, you know how stupid our law is about catching criminals here. We find them, put them in jail, they go to court, and they get out again and repeat the same things, so next time you have to use martial arts in cases like this, we don't ask and you keep quiet about it". Portuguese justice is a joke, basically...
I was robbed 2 years ago, I just lost some money they managed to not steal my laptop, iPod, iPod dock or even headset. In-fact they left everything intact, including the big LCD. They just stole jewelry and money. It was later found out that our house cleaner scared them off when he came to our driveway on a motorbike, if it wasn't for him they'd have enough time to steal much more.
My dad likes to tell a story all the time about when he was a teenager and went with his dad down to Florida. Every year my grandfather would take him and his electrician buddies down to the beach in Florida for a week of gambling, drinking, and other things. So they arrive at the motel and the electricians go out leaving my dad by himself. He goes to the bathroom and when he comes out a guy is going through all their stuff. The guy bolts as soon as he sees my dad but as he's leaving my grandfather and his drunk electrician buddies come out and begin running after him. They caught him on the beach and did god knows what to him before going back to the room.
Sorta related... So once when i was 13 or so, I went to Disney world (as most Americans do for family vacation) and the maid stole $20 off the counter next to my bed. When confronting her she had the most guilty look on her face but still lied to the manager saying "uhh i didn't see any money." Next story is Once a few years back i was in Atlantic city at the Tropicana Hotel (fancy pantsy 4 star hotel/casino)(long story short rich guy paid for my room) and at about 3 AM i was lying on my floor after literally just walking into my room and some guy who i swear to this day very well could have been carrot top just walk right in and lay down 3 feet from me. Me: "WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU" Carrot Top: "Craig?" Me: "NO IM NOT FUCKING CRAIG GET THE HELL OUTTA MY ROOM". He then confusingly stumbled/ran out of my room as i locked the door behind him. From that day forward i always make sure i lock my hotel room doors....
