Thread has been teetering on death. Anyone watch the state of the union?
Thread has been teetering on death. Anyone watch the state of the union?
What is the point when I can just read a summary on Reuters?
I listened to part of it last night. Honestly, the State of the Union is one of those things older people (our parents, mainly) make a big deal of us not participating in, but then not watching it themselves. I get that it's kind of important, but honestly I just don't care about a bunch of [campaign promises/legacy promises], I care about what actually happens. We can hypothesize all day about free community college and less deportation, but I really don't care until you actually pass something for it. I'd like to think other members of my generation are the same way.
Mid-Atlantic states are getting pounded by a snow storm. I ran off the road on the way home from work and took out a mailbox after losing control. Not fun stuff.
Thread has been teetering on death. Anyone watch the state of the union?
in my opinion most state of the union addresses are a bit too..... politician-ey. The summaries over the topics covered are much better.

Anyone else of voting age but not registered to vote? ayy
I'm from Pennsylvania about an hour out from Philly (so I guess its Appalachia, but I don't consider it Appalachia), and something I will never understand is why people show off the Confederate colors around here, like on their cars and stuff. It's one thing to do it down South in Georgia or Alabama or wherever - you know, where people are proud of the Confederate history and heritage - but I'm proud of the ass-whooping we handed to the rebels at Gettysburg. I could never see myself with a Civil War-era Union Flag bumper sticker driving around Virginia. I don't understand why it happens here.

It's mostly just racist rednecks.
Come to Massachusetts, it's illegal for an employer to administer a polygraph test on anybody applying for a job here. But you still have to take a drug test no matter what.
Yeah hey apparently our minimum wage here is $9/hour now. Usually I'm aware of these kinds of things but I didn't find out until today. Woo, my paychecks are slightly bigger now.
I don't mean to distract from talk of snow and the State of the Union address, but there was a thread in Sensationalist Headlines about the War in Eastern Ukraine. We're the sole superpower left in the world with an absurdly large military, but we refuse to give any assistance to Ukraine to fight off the separatists. Poroshenko has asked for supplies countless times before, but nothing has come from the North Atlantic Council. So here's my question: would you gentlemen agree with sending troops into Ukraine to help defeat the separatists? If not, what form of assistance would you approve, if any?
Troops? No. That's directly involving ourselves in a war we have no place in. As the rest of the world is so keen to remind us, we're not the world police. At best we can really only offer humanitarian aid in the form of food and medical supplies, and that has to go to the civilian populace. I feel for the Ukrainians, but we can't get directly involved in their war. We're already stirring up shit with the Russians, we can't risk anything that might be perceived as a threat and send Putin over the edge.

It might honestly be better right now to try to relieve tensions through diplomacy rather than playing Team America: World Police and sending a bunch of guys over to the Ukraine to fight off radicalized militants. The last time we did that... Well, we're still doing that. Do we want another conflict over there that'll boil until we get tired of it, only to have our enemies constantly replaced by varying consortia of separatists? Do we want to attract the ire of the rest of NATO or the UN for overreaching our boundaries and meddling in foreign affairs? Do we want to have more drone operation and boots on the ground when that makes us look bad on the world stage? So no, I don't think sending troops over there is the right choice. I'm just not really sure what is.

Ukraine's problems don't warrant American deaths.
How large are departments by you?, Also there are 5 different departments in my town because its so fucking big.
the towns here are small, so the departments are small as well. but usually when shit goes down here it's nothing that one or two trucks can't handle, it's just that every nearby department likes to get involved, shut down roads, bring out the coffee and donuts and chat for two hours while they let the shit burn itself to the ground and make sure it doesn't spread.
I saw a wreck today that must have happened just a few minutes before I drove by. The airbags were still inflated in one of the cars, half the front had been sheared off, smoke was pouring out, and the guy inside was slumped over. There was a fire department about 200 feet down the road, but the first fire truck that left went completely in the opposite direction. I never found out what happened.
turns out my town is so boring that a new kroger opening up is yikyak gold [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5168294/screencaps/2015-01-23%2004.16.37.png[/t] [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5168294/screencaps/2015-01-23%2004.19.12.png[/t]
