Yeah, but we have Cuomo who is a really shitty governor.
On the other hand, Stewart's ice cream.
I'm gonna be the preacher of nobody and say that, having come from the southeast US, I don't want to leave western New York. Yeah the weather can be near apocalyptic, but the people who complain the loudest already hired plow drivers for their driveways, snow blowers for their sidewalks, and likely haven't touched a shovel in five years. Sure the state plow drivers sometimes knock a mailbox, but the roads are salted and accessible for the price of no more than taxes, and considering the amount of road they have to cover, it's extremely effective. Living in a village, I don't have to set an alarm in a winter morning because there will be plows hard at work by 6am, making the entire village accessible without fail, every time.
On food, we have some of the best pizza in the nation, the best hot wings in the nation, garbage plates, and world-famous apples and wine. That alone is one of two primary reasons why I can't leave, the other being the radio. At least 4 classic rock stations here, 3 alt rock stations, and a small, donation-funded station that will play anything from the Chemical Brothers to Classixx or Washed Out during your afternoon commute. Comparatively to the south, our internet is fast and dirty cheap as well. I paid about $50 a month for 3 Mbps in South Carolina, but started at 2Mbps up here for an illegally low $14 a month.
The south is viewed as a haven paradise, but I invite the locals here to the swamps, inbred hillbillies, mosquitoes, high humidity and sheer boredom of my home land. Plus we got the Adirondacks, Thousand Islands and NYC.
Then there's Long Island. Fuck Long Island.

this is what i've been trying to say
i've been living on LI for almost 20 years
it is the literal embodiment of hell/purgatory/etc
to put it simply, new york state can be divided into three categories: nyc, li, and upstate ny (aka canada jr)

The people who think the South is some kind of paradise are morons. It has some very beautiful countryside you flat out can't get anywhere else, but that doesn't make up for the poverty, crime, and ridiculous price gouging. It's a thousand times cheaper than somewhere like California, but I'd still rather live on the West Coast.

Depends on the part of the South you visit. Some places, sure. Where I live, there's a lot more evergreens. We have a shit ton of magnolias and pines in my area, and other than that there's just generally a lot of green growth. It's beautiful down here, but I'd trade it for somewhere less horribly poor in a heartbeat. My state and especially my city are teeming with corrupt politicians, makes it hard to give a fuck about this place. The personal reasons I have for wanting to leave don't help.

Anything north of NYC is considered upstate
Orange county represent. Apparent gateway to Canada.

Frequent driver through of orange county when its nice outside here. Why are your roads decent for seemingly being in the middle of nowhere?

By who? People who are wrong, that's who.
Yonkers and White Plains are so not upstate.

Orange County isn't in the middle of nowhere lol. It has a population of 400,000 and a few cities. It is also home to some of the most advanced hospitals in the state and is one of the only growing counties.
Empty quote this if you are from NYC

Sloatsburg road, theres only about two miles of it ,and its in the very far corner of the county, with a few dozen homes around it but considering the state of some roads here(NJ), that doesn't mean jack shit.
Also Long Meadow road takes you into the middle of nowhere for being so close to NYC.

Upstate NY is actually quite similar to New England. It's like if Maine and West Virginia had a baby.

Your state literally dropped Snooki as its New Years ball.
Pollytheparrot rated some NY guy dumb for saying the south sucks, but Polly is from Texas, and Texans need to understand that to everyone else in this fucking country, Texas is not the south. Texas is its own region, called Texas. The south sucks. Texas is Texas. According to the census bureau, yes, Texas is part of the south, but apparently so is Maryland, and we all know that's bullshit.
Now, the deep south, consisting of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, and maybe Tennessee, that shit is the absolute worst. Fuck that whole area

Eh, some parts of Tennessee are pretty okay. Knoxville's good, Nashville's touristy but good, Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville are passable, and Memphis is literally post-apocalyptic. Aside from Beale Street. Beale Street is okay.
Then again, I live in Sevierville and spend my days in Knoxville, so maybe I'm slightly biased.
But, to be fair, we aren't the deep south. We're a buffer zone. Heck, we sided with the North during the Civil War (aside from Franklin. Franklin didn't side with the North.)
