Eh, some parts of Tennessee are pretty okay. Knoxville's good, Nashville's touristy but good, Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville are passable, and Memphis is literally post-apocalyptic. Aside from Beale Street. Beale Street is okay. Then again, I live in Sevierville and spend my days in Knoxville, so maybe I'm slightly biased. But, to be fair, we aren't the deep south. We're a buffer zone. Heck, we sided with the North during the Civil War (aside from Franklin. Franklin didn't side with the North.)
This is why I gave Tennessee a 'maybe' rather than declaring it a full-fledged member of the deep south. It has some redeeming qualities. The Carolinas are pretty bad too for the most part.
You mean the War of Northern Aggression?
The war of the South being a bunch of idiots.
The War of Can't We All Just Get Along?
Any people from Florida? Parents have been wanting to move there, completely against it because I'm a Junior in HS and I'd basically be uprooting my whole life.

Florida man lives there
I mean relatively in the middle of nowhere. Sloatsburg road, theres only about two miles of it ,and its in the very far corner of the county, with a few dozen homes around it but considering the state of some roads here(NJ), that doesn't mean jack shit. Also Long Meadow road takes you into the middle of nowhere for being so close to NYC.
You realize that NJ is notorious for it's shitty roads, right? I mean so many drivers in NY always make fun of roads in NJ.
Just anything to do with driving, really.
Pollytheparrot rated some NY guy dumb for saying the south sucks, but Polly is from Texas, and Texans need to understand that to everyone else in this fucking country, Texas is not the south. Texas is its own region, called Texas. The south sucks. Texas is Texas. According to the census bureau, yes, Texas is part of the south, but apparently so is Maryland, and we all know that's bullshit. Now, the deep south, consisting of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, and maybe Tennessee, that shit is the absolute worst. Fuck that whole area
Some guy who said California is pretty great is trying to say what states are bad and what aren't, oh jeez. You don't know, do you?
Some guy who said California is pretty great is trying to say what states are bad and what aren't, oh jeez. You don't know, do you?
lol I didn't even say California, I said SoCal, and I didn't say it was 'pretty great', I said it was less shitty than most (not all) other places in the U.S. but most of your experiences wherever you go are going to be greatly affected by how much money you have or the parts that you visit. have a lot of money and go to Dubai? probably going to be a blast. dirt poor and go to Dubai? probably means you're going to die building infrastructure for the World Cup. similarly, LA is going to blow if you can only afford to stay at a rundown hotel in central Los Angeles before you get to a tourist-ridden Disneyland. it's going to feel like a much nicer place if you live there year-round in Beverly Hills. cost of living is pretty high, but that doesn't somehow make it a not-good place. there's a lot to do, there's a lot to see, there's a lot of diversity, etc. you've got the city, the beach, hiking, skiing not too far off, tons of sports teams, gay marriage is legal, there are a lot of reasons to like California in general, and SoCal specifically (the other parts are nice too). compare this to most other places in the country: there are niches in the midwest that are nice, but there isn't a whole lot of different things you can experience there. the deep south has miserable weather and (outside of New Orleans) isn't the ideal place to go if you aren't white, but there is a lot of culture. Colorado is cool, but Wyoming and Montana have a combined population of eleven. the northeast is pretty cool and certainly has a lot of culture, but some people can't stand the cold. one thing i'm very against is judging a place solely by their tourist traps. if you go to NYC and say it sucked because you visited the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building and it was super crowded or something, you are a moron
You mean the War of Northern Aggression?
The war where the south biffed it hard and the north proved their superiority again.
lol I didn't even say California, I said SoCal, and I didn't say it was 'pretty great', I said it was less shitty than most (not all) other places in the U.S. but most of your experiences wherever you go are going to be greatly affected by how much money you have or the parts that you visit. have a lot of money and go to Dubai? probably going to be a blast. dirt poor and go to Dubai? probably means you're going to die building infrastructure for the World Cup. similarly, LA is going to blow if you can only afford to stay at a rundown hotel in central Los Angeles before you get to a tourist-ridden Disneyland. it's going to feel like a much nicer place if you live there year-round in Beverly Hills. cost of living is pretty high, but that doesn't somehow make it a not-good place.
If you're rich any place you visit will be fun, but that doesn't mean it isn't overall mediocre or shitty.
and I don't think it's overall mediocre or shitty. it's subjective. it depends entirely on what your personal interests are and what kind of environment you prefer. southern california offers a wide variety of both. but it isn't as poor or stupid as the south, and there is more to do there than the whole of the midwest combined, so I think a lot of people would agree with the statement that it is less shitty than most (not all) other places in the U.S. places that compete imo (in no particular order): -the rest of california -the northwest -colorado -arizona -texas -florida if you really love densely populated areas and don't mind the weather, then the northeast is cool too the rest of the U.S. isn't so one-size-fits-all as those places. i can see why someone would love Chicago for its culture, or Alaska for its wilderness, or Hawaii for its beaches, etc., but they aren't for everyone!! [editline]19th February 2015[/editline] and no, I don't think that being rich makes Omaha, Nebraska, super fun, or Flint, Michigan, or Bismarck, North Dakota.
Why do people hate the South so much? It's not nearly as bad as some people seem to think it is. I've lived in Georgia my whole life, and life isn't boring and everyone isn't poor or racist or stupid. Of course everywhere has a share of good and bad areas, but I don't think the South in general is really that bad. I traveled a decent amount when I was younger, and I seemed to be able to find a good and bad side to every place I visited. I will admit the weather is terrible, though. There is nothing worse than a hot and sticky humid day.
little did you know that I am an junior executive cowboy at the local census bureau office
hold on a second do you have - a stetson hat - a bolo tie ?

[editline]19th February 2015[/editline] every place does certainly have good and bad though! i'm from Oregon, and while i love my state very dearly, there are definitely parts of it that i could do without.
United States chat? I'm in. Living in NC currently. I'm living in a shitty backwater town. Hate it.
have you gotten out much? how do you like NC as a whole? and where are you from

I can easily point out places around where I live that could use some improvement, but it's really a shame that a lot of folks can't stand the South. It's not bad once you get to know some good folks and some nice areas. Definitely not as bad as a lot of people think. I've spoken to some folks who think it's still like the 1950s down here.
nah, of course it isn't like that, and of course if you know your way around i'm sure it's lovely. but i also have black friends who didn't, such as a guy who was attending University of Southern Miss i believe, and he tried to go to a party at University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and got denied because it was a white party. and then those same people let in black members of the football team. that's unheard of where i'm from.

People generally mix quite well around here, but I know stuff like that still happens in some places.
have you gotten out much? how do you like NC as a whole? and where are you from
I was born here, I've seen pretty much everything this state has to offer. I don't like it much, but it's better than some places I've lived. Also I'm from this shitty town. :v:
the accents are godawful
Hey whoa, back right the fuck up there buddy. I may talk a significant amount of shit about my home state, but don't you dare shit on our accents. They blow anything from the rest of the country out of the water.
United States chat? I'm in. Living in NC currently. I'm living in a shitty backwater town. Hate it.
where in nc?
North Carolina
i hate the new york/jersey accent it's almost as bad as a bahstan accent
There's a ton of different New York accents.
