I live about a quarter mile from the NJ Transit Bergen/Main line, only hear them every now and again.
Funny, there are actually train tracks about that same distance from me. I hear the trains blaring their horns from time to time, but it doesn't irritate me, I actually enjoy it when it shows up. I remember around New Years a passing train blared its horn strongly as midnight hit.
I live next to train tracks as well. They dont bother me anymore but sometimes when they honk there horn a million times when i know theres only 2 roads they're going by is really annoying.
Yeah, I got used to them. Don't really wake me up or anything, just annoying when they happen to pass by in the day :v:
Hey - I'm moving to DC in a couple of weeks and then starting college in Philadelphia in late August. If anyone who lives in either of these cities could recommend some cool non-touristy stuff to check out, that would be great. Restaurants, stores, parks, concert venues, etc. I need some good ways to kill time out of the house and off-campus.
I'll be heading to California from the UK tonight.
Oh boy I can't wait for that jet lag :suicide:

what school are you going to?

Haverford College, not exactly in Philadelphia but not very far outside of it
well while you're in philly (sorry, again) you absolutely must check out geno's steaks. fantastic philly cheesesteaks, a lot of people go there so expect a line 24/7 but it is worth it.
as far as dc stuff goes, outside of all the fun lovey dovey tourist stuff there's not much to do except like random bar hopping. also like one of the highest murder rates in the country, so good luck.
What's so bad about Philly? I've liked my visits there and it seems to be a cool city with good, inexpensive food. Also lots of live music and college students. I'll definitely check out Geno's the next time I'm there.
I don't think I'll do anything that will get myself murdered in DC unless I accidentally hit the wrong guy at a concert or something. Bar hopping is out of the question since I'm not 21, so I guess I'll try finding some stuff on my own explorations through various neighborhoods. At least art museums are an option if nothing else.
this is philly in a nutshell

just remember that apart from the highly modernized metro areas, most cities tend to be rather shitty. and i highly recommend you visit every smithsonian musem in dc, it's worth it.
I get plenty of random insults from drivers in Providence already
there are actually people in rhode island? every time i've passed through there i've never seen anyone on a sidewalk. i literally thought that was just a state for driving between states.
Providence certainly isn't the liveliest city, but there are people here
Okay, question. I live in Hawaii, and I'm moving to San Diego. Excited to see all the billboards, gridlocks, and experience the drought.
Is it really as bad as everyone says it is?
My neighbors have chickens. They all started following me when I went to get the mail. I am the Chicken King.

What's up with Middletown and all of the chickens around here lately

I think Pine Bush is leaking.
Another day, another major shooting. There's got to be some reason aside from just the availability of guns that we have these so often.
Apparently when my nearest Krispy Kremes store has the hot doughnuts sign on, and they are cooking fresh donuts with their machine, any donuts that they don't bother to pick up off the conveyor just end up in a trash bin at the end of the conveyor.
Don't waste food... even more so if it's doughnuts =w='

You know what they ought to do? Put a large bin at the end of the conveyor with a plastic bag in it to catch the donuts, and then use those donuts in their display and supermarket packages.
or just give the plastic bag of donuts to me
hey im going on an exchange year to america in like 10 days or sutin, can I buy a cheap mobile phone at walmart? How much would I be looking at for a pay as you go one? ty
Yeah, you can pick up a pre-paid at Walmart or... literally anywhere else, too.
You're looking at about $10 for the phone and $30 for an hour of talk and unlimited text. If you want a smartphone and web, you'll pay more, but that's your entry-level.

Yeah, you can get this one for $10 and pay $30/$45 a month depending on what service you choose ($30 gets 1500 call minutes, unlimited text and 100MB data, while $45 is unlimited talk, text, and data). It'll remind you a few days before service expires to get a new card. Should it expire, You'll have time to re-activate and keep the same number. Not quite sure how long you have for that.
They have other phones that are fairly cheap that you might want to look at too.
