Texas is one of the better southern states imo.
Texas is seriously a phenomenal state and it's fun to see how people react when I say I'm from Texas. I recently moved to Minnesota and I've traveled to Europe several times, and every time people are like "you don't have an accent! do you guys ride horses all the time? isn't texas like a big desert with tumbleweeds and saloons?" People always seem amazed when I'm not speaking in southern drawl and saying "y'all" every other word. Texas is normal as shit. Austin is probably one of my favorite cities in the entire world, minus the traffic.
any of you motherfuckers in the bay area let's hang out i don't know anyone at all here

We never seceded from the Union, there's a general lack of y'all, and there's no Southern accents around here. I once knew a girl who moved from the deep Southern states to the Greater St. Louis area, and after about six months or so, her Southern accent had mostly vanished. I guess if you went to the counties in the boot heel, you would probably see the Confederate flags come out, but at that point, you might as well just cross into Arkansas and seal the deal.

And this is coming from a South Dakotan, who isn't exactly sure if we even have a distinct accent.
It's because it was a slave state before the war.
Yeah, but other than that, there's not many reasons to call Missouri part of the South. It just doesn't fit particularly well.
