Roommate and I are doing a bar tour in grand rapids Michigan. Anyone gonna be floating around town for us to join? Be nice to hang with some locals so we don't get shivved.
I live in new york and I hate this place. I only have a learner's permit and it's literally more legal for me to fly an ultra-light plane right now than ride a bicycle with a small engine welded on it 3.5 ish miles to my work (I had to walk home today). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultralight_aviation https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/motorized-devices-cannot-be-registered-new-york Note how one is entirely illegal and the other doesn't even require a training course. Also, electric bikes are illegal here. edit: 3.5 miles doesn't sound like a whole lot but there's nothing but hills and forest out here maaan.
Electric bikes are illegal in ny? I knew it was backwards here but that's some shit.
Electric bikes are illegal in ny? I knew it was backwards here but that's some shit.
Illegal for road use. edit which is to say basically all use, seeing as I don't see much use in biking with an electric bike in your back yard what with sidewalks being included with that. http://www.citylab.com/crime/2016/02/the-murky-legality-of-e-bikes/426969/
Under federal law, an electric bike with a maximum assisted speed under 20 miles per hour can be sold as a bicycle, not a motor vehicle. Under New York state law, riders would need to register these as they would a motorcycle, moped, or car. But there’s no clear way to register them. Because of this regulatory patchwork, e-bikes are legal to sell as bikes anywhere in the U.S. but effectively illegal to ride in New York, since they can’t be registered as motor vehicles.
In some areas it's illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk due to pedestrian traffic. Lots of places force bikers onto the road with cars and trucks. The more pleasant ones have bike lanes though along the curb, but they're few and far to be seen.
That's because New York is the greatest State in the fuckin Union [sp] We're prideful mofos about our state [/sp]
Next to new Hampshire, of course. I got you fam, easy to make mistake

Yeah no seriously guys did you hear about the free stater movement a while back? A bunch of libertarians across the country were planning a mass exodus to NH because we're apparently the freest of all. Then the heroin epidemic started and they decided not to I guess lol

So a bit of a rant but I'm slightly interested in seeing if anyone else has any opinion on it. I've been extremely bored with life the last few months. I'm pretty much in a dead end job, i live in an apartment with 4 others to help keep the bills and rent cheap. While I occasionally enjoy their company, I enjoy doing my own thing and not being bothered by others more. I've had this thought of just dropping everything and moving somewhere else and trying to "start over" but I feel I'd probably end up in the same situation again. I then started thinking about camping this weekend to get away from things for a few days and that led me to thinking about just going off the grid entirely and living out in the mountains, live off the land. Many of you at this point would probably think I'm crazy, but being outdoors like that has always been something I absolutely loved doing. Back when I was around 16, I went to an outdoorsman's camp where they taught us all these cool survival techniques. How to hunt/trap, how to find a safe place to stay if you're stranded, etc. At the end, we got a bow, a knife, and some matches and had to go out into the forest and survive for 3 days. I never felt more alive! Granted it was only 3 days and if something went seriously wrong there were people within 10 miles for me to get to for help, but this is something that has been seriously on my mind the last few weeks. The only thing that is truly keeping me from just saying fuck it and doing it is my mother. Granted we're really not that close, but I do see here each week and I'd feel pretty horrible if something happened and her nor my step-dad could get a hold of me to let me know. I'm curious as to whether anyone else on here has thought of something like this and maybe even done it for a while or if anyone else even has some thoughts on this matter.
you and me both, brother, i hate where i live, don't care for the job i have and would love to get away from it all. only thing that sucks about going off the grid like that is you basically become a wildman and will more than likely have odd fits of missing simple shit like hot water and air conditioning.
Why not just move to a town/village in the middle of nowhere? That way you still enjoy a quiet life but also benefits of the modern world like electricity. Some places in Alaska come to mind.
There are no jobs in rural America, unfortunately. At least not in my state.
There really aren't small town around here anymore. Even the few that there is, you have to travel for a decent paying job to afford a house. I don't like the feeling of being tied down to a place. I hate working every day just to have the majority go towards bills and shit. There's just an awesome feeling of freedom when you're out in the wild and everything you make has a purpose for you. You're really never not busy. I do imagine at times I would miss electric, a/c and hot water. Hell even running water. Now that it's going into fall, I plan to get out more, go exploring to find a nice spot and start working on bushcraft skills. Stay out for a weekend and see if I really do still enjoy it and if I could handle it. Like I said though, its a thought and there's still stuff holding me here from full blown doing it.

Secondly, please don't pull an into the wild. Having another "Facepunch saves a life" campaign would probably not be for the best.
What do people here generally think of living in Portland, where's the best place to get a house, where do I look for jobs etc, because depending on jobs and visas chances are I'm going to be invadi-immigrating to your country sometime within the next year. Also in general living in the USA, who'd you suggest for healthcare, car insurance etc? Going to be living in Oregon as that's where my partner lives.
Does your partner already have any of that stuff?
Does your partner already have any of that stuff?
She has health insurance via her parents with Kaiser, that's really it.
oregon is a boring state btw
oregon is a boring state btw
Eh, compared to where I live in Australia it's ridiculously lively
Honestly I've been pondering what the fuck I'm going to do with myself after college. Thankfully, there's been enough saved up in my NY529 for me to come out more or less debt free but living on Long Island is gonna suck as a new grad. My brother is 24 and is still allowed to live at home so maybe I have a few years left before I should worry. Are there any other new grads in NY?
