"Let us decide for ourselves how we wish to be perceived."
You don't get to do that dumb-asses. It's all up to how others want to perceive you. Just like how I perceive this video as being trash.

God damn, I've never seen a like-to-dislike ratio this bad before
why did the BBC do a whole video on a simple opinion piece anyway?
It's not blackface but sometimes it's obvious a Black reaction face was chosen because they make expressions other races don't do. There's a reason the seedy underbelly of the internet loves them.
because they're funny?
and strangely enough, people find pictures of any race funny
it's almost like everyone has the potential to be funny, and anyone can find someone else to be funny

Well that is imagination blackface and you are a bigot

i looked at a black person once i think i committed a race crime

I think the idea is more like 'would I think this is funny if a white person was doing it?' kind of thing.

Says the man with a Black Face for an avatar.

the answer to which is yes, yes i would find it funny
"Ask yourself why you use that emoji or gif"
Uh, because it happens to convey the message that I want the recipient to understand? A lot of these are not funny because the person is black. A lot of people who make great reaction gifs just happen to be black.
Like goddamn, this is such a non-issue and almost trivializes actual racism.
A lot of people who make great reaction gifs just happen to be black.
Don't be ridiculous you racist nazi scum.
The only possible reason you would use a picture of a black person is because of their skin color.
I bet you're also one of those Confederate loving hicks that don't like segregation in schools.
Big Man Tyrone was the greatest racial tragedy of the modern era, and I can't believe he would become a race traitor just to dance around for the amusement of the white devil.

Horrible. Just horrible. [sp]/s[/sp]
I love how they just cherrypick random reaction gifs that just so happen to have black people in them. As if Ron Paul "It's Happening", Steve Carrell "Oh God No Please No", and that gif of Stephen Colbert freaking out don't exist. All in which are way more popular than most of the gifs I see in the BBC video.
Bullshit. I have dreads(which first of all isnt a black thing it's nature thing but thats besides the point) and have had braids, and even cornrows
9/10 times I leave the house even if its just to taco bell I end up in a conversation with a black person that stopped me to say "Woah thats so cool, how did you get your hair to do that/who did your rows?" and end up having a pleasant conversation with a nice stranger. Not exaggerating its like every single time I go anywhere someone literally stops me at the store to say "dude that is sick" and 100% of them have been black. And again not exaggerating anything, and sure this anecdotal but in spite of all the compliments I get I'm 2/2 on parents (that don't even talk to each other) calling me the N word for having this hair. What I'm saying is the only people who give a fuck anecdotally in my life have been self-admitted racists so...
Imagine being in cosmetology school and sitting around one day with some classmates. You get to talking about what to do with your hair and cornrows get brought up. They think its great and say "do it, dude!" and you tell them you cant because its racist? Like I've actually done that as a joke before with the rebuttal being "I should slap you for that, thats the dumbest shit I've ever heard sit the fuck down in the chair already" because they get the joke but you say it with a straight face so they think you were serious for a second. Bro its for the culture, if you don't let people participate in your shit then you're defacto racist. If I was doing something wrong by getting this hair, then I better go apologize to the (black) people that worked really hard on it and are really proud of how their work turned out, shared it on their socials... Their work isn't good it's blackface!
edit:
Hell, a really good counter point would be that I knew at least 4 houses on my block were drug dealers (they stopped me and offered their phone numbers because I look like an obvious client). I was taking those edgy selfies on the porch in front of my neighbors so probably a good 12 or so criminals watched me pose with my new hair every time I took selfies out there. Strange how those same totally-capable-of-harassing-me people offered things like "hey do you need borrow my bike" and stuff while I had [del]cornrows[/del]blackface on while living near them.
...am I racist because my avatar is an Asian man and I've never even crossed the Pacific Ocean?
Help, BBC, I need to know if I'm culturally appropriating from Nintendo or something.
lets not get outraged at black people getting kicked in the face for being black
no haha the real issue here is those evil whites using 'online blackface'

I actually had something like this happen to me. Back when I had dreads, a Maori man pulled over to tell me how much he liked them then he and his wife gave me a greenstone necklace (common jewellery good luck and tidings in Maori culture) for free. Throughout the 4 or so years I had them, I hadn't once been told that having dreads was a bad thing by the people who were supposed to be offended by it.
What is this dumb trend of 'all white people are racists' or 'anything about black people is now racist'
What is this dumb trend of 'all white people are racists' or 'anything about black people is now racist'
People who are trying way to hard to fix societies problems and over correcting.
Not everything is racist. And when something is racist, either pure hatred or pure stupidity, it's pretty obvious.
What is this dumb trend of 'all white people are racists' or 'anything about black people is now racist'
I got an idea why that might be. If you make social advantage and disadvantage about race, it doesn't have to be about economic status anymore. This way you can claim benefits you deserve for being socially disadvantaged, while being economically perfectly fine.
The idea that you deserve more because of what you are, and that your problems are caused by 'the other people' is a dangerously appealing idea, as we repeatedly see with all sorts of nationalist and racial ideologies.
"Using a black reaction gif makes you racist"
The irony is that it's the opposite. A lot of racist people won't use reaction gifs with black people because they don't want to identify as those people (since you use a reaction gif to show how you would/want to react). Using reaction gifs of people different than you means you don't care about the differences.
Take that, BBC!
It's like someone sat down and went "What can I get offended by today?" and then made this video a few hours later.

I wonder if anyone will ever use avoiding cultural appropriation to justify having only straight white people in their shows/films because they are straight white people?
It's kind of the first thing that comes to mind for me when seeing this "digital blackface" crap. Should we stop having diversity in the entertainment we create as well?
Should I stop enjoying Luke Cage and pre-2002 Wayans because it's not "for" me?
BBC is culturally appropriating the term Big Black Cock.
BBC please change your name
What is this dumb trend of 'all white people are racists' or 'anything about black people is now racist'
Outrage culture that comes from a place of not being oppressed or dealing with actual real discrimination scares me
[editline]6th September 2017[/editline]
Black face was real oppression
Comparing it to racially equal emoji's is indirectly massively reducing the negative message and harm black face had.
[editline]6th September 2017[/editline]
It's like they want to feel like they're fighting against someone that is oppressing them but they're just really dumb about it
white people aren't allowed to have dreads, but she is allowed to straighten her hair?? uh racist
I think we can all agree that the racial emoji variants were a mistake
They're non-standardized and cause nothing but trouble both socially and technically
generic, universal yellow emojis are the only true emojis
They are standardized, honestly the emoji skin color modification fit character perfectly into the Unicode standard. It's not like they just went "yeah from now on we have this bolted on thing".
For example:
Male, White, (0-width joiner), school = •
I looks like the back-end of facepunch breaks this unicode string but it should look like this: https://emojipedia.org/male-teacher-type-1-2/
