Outrage culture that comes from a place of not being oppressed or dealing with actual real discrimination scares me
[editline]6th September 2017[/editline]
Black face was real oppression
Comparing it to racially equal emoji's is indirectly massively reducing the negative message and harm black face had.
[editline]6th September 2017[/editline]
It's like they want to feel like they're fighting against someone that is oppressing them but they're just really dumb about it
I've said it before, it's problems for people who don't have them. Videos like these aren't targeted at people who are in any way oppressed, they're not even targeted towards black people, they're targeted towards a middle/upper class audience with an educated background who live in the first world. Of course they don't want to deal with actual discrimination or, heaven forbid, anything that could be dangerous enough to fight against that it could result in inconveniences in their every day lives. The problems of political turmoil, inequality, pollution, the rise of global extremism and terrorism are far too big and complicated, so lets instead create smaller problems that we can solve to make us feel better about ourselves.
Things like manspreading, and mansplaining, female representation in videogames, how there aren't enough Jewish superheros, the AC being sexist, you know, small stuff you can quickly get outraged by in a tweet and then claim to be a hero for bringing it into the public eye. Shit that is so meaningless that ultimately everyone ends up forgetting or that it ends up solving itself. It makes it easy then to say you're socially conscious, while being completely useless for society at large. People have made careers out of this shit, it all ultimately has to do with boredom, from having too easy of a life.
They are standardized, honestly the emoji skin color modification fit character perfectly into the Unicode standard. It's not like they just went "yeah from now on we have this bolted on thing".
For example:
Male, White, (0-width joiner), school = •
I looks like the back-end of facepunch breaks this unicode string but it should look like this: https://emojipedia.org/male-teacher-type-1-2/

slacktivism is a massive problem in "end-game" society.
while it can be argued that one issue doesn't necessarily overshadow another, these sort of nitpicks of arbitrary little bullshit only serve to distract and detract from actual problems, effectively doing more harm than good. it becomes genuinely difficult to sort the flow of problems in the world and society at large, to differentiate between what is truly destructive, and what is just a mild inconvenience.
the more comfortable your life gets, the more eroded your perspective of life becomes. small issues start to seem bigger than they are, and to live a life with no purpose is depressing, so naturally you create a purpose for yourself. something to fight against or to bring light to. something to make you sleep better at night.
there are people in the world whose only purpose is to fetch buckets of water from the nearby river for their village three times a day, every day. for years. that is their only life goal. their overarching purpose is to simply not die in any given day. their perspective is fundamentally vivid, pure. there's no time, no strength and no need to start pondering existential conundrums or get depressed at the monotony of their lives. other lives literally depend on them. true hardship bares its own fruit, and as such, the water-fetcher is happier than most 20~ something year olds living in a hyper-developed first world city, while not being anywhere near as safe, comfortable or healthy.
when you start asking yourself why that is, you begin to deconstruct the bullshit around you. your resolve is strengthened. you remind yourself that things can always get much, much worse. and the trick is to not stop thinking like this. the moment you go "hmm but maybe always thinking about africans whenever life gets difficult isnt really helping my situation" is the moment you lose control, and lose perspective, and get back to square one -- because it's not just "thinking about africans", it's about reminding yourself that there is an inherent, inner human strength inside all of us. there is also a very intricate perspective gauge built into our brains, and it's extremely important to maintain it every once in a while and make sure it's still functioning, so that you don't suddenly wake up one day thinking; "what if reaction gifs of black people are actually the new digital blackface? get me the BBC on the phone asap".
BBC is culturally appropriating the term Big Black Cock.
BBC please change your name
They'll probably change it so something like "National Television & Radio"
It's like someone sat down and went "What can I get offended by today?" and then made this video a few hours later.
You're thinking about Twitter :v:
Well shit. Me and wifey just spammed each other with reaction gifs that were mostly black people.
I should tell her that what we did was vile and wrong and then we'll hold hands and turn ourselves in, eventually committing suicide in prison. :disappoint:

The problem is that not every emoji set includes skin tone variants, and when it doesn't it renders as the emoji and a box, which is ugly as hell. Emoji should NOT be strings of >1 character.
Weren't braids pretty common in post-Alexander India, Achaemenid Persia, and bronze age - classical age Greece/Rome?
Those are actually dreadlocks, not braids. But still, dreadlocks were common in many cultures, including Germanic and Celtic tribes.

Does the Unicode standard accommodate different skin tones or is this just an Apple thing?
Does the Unicode standard accommodate different skin tones or is this just an Apple thing?
I believe the unicode standard was updated to include it

As far as I can tell, it's a Unicode standard now. The Apple-exclusive days were really unfortunate, though. And as I said, not all emoji sets have them. As far as I can tell, the Windows ones don't. My Samsung Galaxy S7 renders them but I can't choose them to insert.

I guess as harsh as it is, if it's part of the standard it's up to the people making the emoji sets to ensure they keep up to date with the standard. But then you have to deal with things such as Android version fragmentation etc.

What is a turbo racist? That sounds like someone trying to win the Guinness world record for the number of racist posts they can make on the internet in 1 day
