He was offered a role, but denied it. Dolph took it instead.
Also this is the making-of. Skip to about 1 minute in. It's really cool.

"He wants to be president." was the best damn line in this movie.
Everyone in the theater was cracking up.
Going to see this in 3 hours or so.

not many always sunny fans on fp
This movie looks so epic.
Saw it, loved it, want to see it again.

Some critics felt after the A-Team and the Losers, this just was one more, and without the big name manly cast, they said it should of been straight to video, but you know what? Action is action. Why would you sit in a predictable Romantic movie if you know what to expect, if you were not into it and not in a relationship? I guess thats why some people who watch movies in general, maybe because they have to (critics) may say otherwise. If your tired of the same thing, invent a full new movie genre then.

i love the smell of a false dichotomy

I hope part of the negativity is not some people were not thinking it was like the book.
Even though he did just one single scene, certain workers from California are making a big deal out of it, in fact some people are making a protest out of it! It was in my local paper today.

Someone went out of their way to make this, probably in CA.

Just out of curiosity, to those that rated this 2/5, (certain media critics have too) when you compare to that Will Ferell/Mark Wahlberg movie, which is better? I am not even going to mention Inception, because that has something new and old others can't touch.
The Other Guys was an awesome comedy.
The Expendables was an awesome action movie.
You can't compare them.
I was amazed when my friend said he hated it after we watched it last night. For those who have watched it already. I think the auto shotgun was the greatest. :byodood:

Terry Crews was pretty damn funny
I lost it in the theater when Terry Crews [sp]blew up the fucking towers with his automatic shotgun.[/sp]
Sylvester Stallone
Jet Li
Dolph Lundgren
Bruce Willis
Those are the only action legends in this film. The other half of the cast are newer B-movie action "stars" (aside from Statham).
Where are Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Kurt Russell and Wesley Snipes?
Van Damme refused to join the cast, it was said like three times in the thread already.
So guys, how was this movie? Worth watching or is it really nothing special other than an excuse to watch some "big" action stars attempting to revive their place in cinema?
I personally have heard some pretty negative reviews but I would probably still see it regardless.
saw this last night, wow what a terrible film
get out this was one of the best action movies ever
and if you were gonna watch this for the story then you watched it for the wrong reason
Copy-paste:
It's not a nice action film if it's a mindless blood bath, it's a poor excuse to show blood and explosions on a big screen. People just like it because HURR DURR SO MANLY.
"The Expendables" is absolutely shit, "Eat Pray Love" is almost-certainly shit, but "Scott Pilgrim" is awesome - like, top-ten-best-of-the-year awesome.
And it's being beat by idiots in the box office, by worthless, artless pandering to the lowest common-denominator "guy movie" (and the worst action film not featuring a badly-designed transforming robot).
But seriously - "The Expendables" is SHIT. I cannot stress that enough. Shit. S-H-I-T shit. It sucks. It's "Transformers" bad. THAT bad.
And no, I don't mean that it sucks in the awesome way that 1980s "guy movies" suck and therefore it's ironically-awesome. I know that's what you've heard, and you've heard wrong. It's not an "homage" to bad movies, though it WANTS to be - it just IS a bad movie. Sloppily-directed, terribly written, and it doesn't even play to the strengths of it's assembled cast: Stallone and Rourke are both capable dramatic actors - why not give them anything to do? Statham and Jet Li are both skilled martial-arts stars - why are all the fights choppy over-edited MMA-looking crud? Dolph Lungdren and Terry Crews are funny - why not let them be? I'm struggling to think of anyone in this for whom it's NOT one of the worst things they've ever done, well... except for Steve Austin.
Oh, and the action? It's terrible. Guns get shot, guys fall over, pyro blows, that's about it. Occasionally there's an uninteresting fight scene. Remember all that glorious ultra-gore in "Rambo?" Yeah, not here. It was obviously shot with one eye on a potential PG-13, so it's all quick hits and blink-and-you-miss-it inserts.
It's a complete disaster, cynically banking on audiences either A.) actually still desiring this crap, or B.) thinking their getting Tarantino/Rodriguez-style crap-cinema-elevated-into-self-commentary when it's really just leftovers. So guys, I'm beggin' ya: PLEASE don't let it pay off for them. Not when a real, honest-for-real game-changing masterpiece like "Scott Pilgrim" (which, incidentally, also has better action scenes) is out there, too... or, hell, when you could even just go see Inception again ;)
But, still... "The Expendables?" Really? Humanity, sometimes you really just disgust me...
Guns get shot, guys fall over, pyro blows, that's about it.
That's good enough for me.
People who don't like this film either watch it for the wrong reasons or are nerds with no friends.
Its funny how you say that Scott Pilgrim has better action scenes. Its a fucking comic book movie with a shitty actor who plays shitty roles. I doubt you even saw this movie.
Btw Scott Pilgrim is another one of those shitty romance movies. Real men don't like to watch teenagers be awkward.

Let them have their pretend time to be film critics, makes them feel special

I didn't know a movie title made you lose your faith in humanity.
i love both of you guys
Who cares people have their opinions. Just like I liked both Transformers and will gladly see the third. People will not like the same thing as you. But them saying your a fucking idiot if you see x movie is fucking stupid.
stupid
^^^^^^^^^ That's kind of the vibe I'm getting from your post
couldnt agree more
im gonna go see this in a few hours
I saw it a couple nights ago, and while it was a fun movie, it wasn't as fun as, say, The A-Team.
Expendables seemed like it was trying too hard to have a story. It had all of those awfully written padding scenes while you wait for the next deafening action segment. Worst of all, all of the story bits seemed utterly pointless. The "Statham's girlfriend" plotline? She's got like, a total of 10 minutes of screentime and they never metion her again. Jet Li needing more money for his "family"? They mention that a couple times then Jet Li says he has no family. What was the point of that? Was it a joke? Where's the punchline (if it's supposed to be the whole "I'm smaller" thing then that was a terrible punchline) Speaking of which, Jet Li's smallness is only relevant in a single scene, then once again, it's never mentioned again. Lungdren's revenge on the team? He's in one scene, gets shot, but oh he's better and he's back. Pointless plot thread.
Even the main plot with the General felt pointless. The General seemed like an utterly pointless character as he doesn't ever do anything, then gets killed. You could have done the whole movie without having a terrible actress for a love interest by just writing the general and his daughter out and just having the rotten ex FBI guy as the main villain through and through.
It also bugged me that they say this movie has "EVERY ACTION STAR EVER!!!!" And I will give them credit that they got a ton of the best guys... so why not give half of them action scenes? When I first came into the theater I thought that everyone featured on the banners were going to be part of the team and go in guns blazing, but instead we get it so that over half of the characters have fewer than three scenes in the entire movie, and some of them are just speaking roles. If they wanted a realistic representation of the movie they should have just thrown Stallone and Statham on the posters.
Speaking of which, why the hell was Willis on the poster, and Schwartzeneggar wasn't? They practically had the same screentime.
Still, all that said, it was fun. The action segments were good and manly, and the final battle was just what I had hoped. I only wish that they had spent more time trying to add more awesome action scenes rather than the awful padding that filled a majority of the movie.
Jet Li was embarrassed that he was smaller than the rest of the team, so he said he had a family so that he wouldn't have to say he was small in front of everybody.
