Here's a similar weapon system, the C-RAM, which is basically the Phalanx but for land

Shit works
That shit is no joke. C-Ram saves lives. Your asshole goes to 10 on the pucker factor when that damn fire-finder goes off.
They are accurate enough to pick up small mortars and rockets?
That is pretty scary

The system can auto correct it's aim by tracking its own bullets too, it's called continuous aim correction, or CAC
Don't be fooled by the videos, CIWS has often been jokenly explaind as "Crap It Wont Shoot" or "Captain, It Wont Shoot" for reasons that is implied. Also It works on the idea of, "If we throw enough bullets at something, its bound to hit it, right?"
Also what ship were you on?
C-RAMs are the fucking coolest

Can't imagine what it would sound like in person, nevermind right on the same deck.
Mad props to the engineers behind this thing.

You're right that the system is a pain in the ass and it has way more names than that.... but when it works, it's badass. For the most part, ours usually stayed up, but my last deployment both weapons were constantly faulting out so we'd be troubleshooting all the time. I was on LHA5 USS Peleliu

Yeah, I am currently on USS Elrod, FFG55, Frigate life, is the only life.

it's loud even with hearing protection, the concussion from so many 20mm rounds going off so fast actually vibrates your uniform. I kind of miss shooting it, but I don't really miss all the Navy bullshit I had to deal with
It fires those bigass blue bullets. Behind it is a belt of .50, compared in size to a golf ball and stick of RAM.
[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/71/50BMG_size_comparison.JPG[/img_thumb]
the actual tungsten projectiles are about the same size as the .50's.... the outer part, which adds the bigger size is actually a plastic "sabot" that comes off immediately after leaving the barrels. It helps with the effect of the rifling and also keeps the barrels cooler. It looks like your 20mm in this picture is a dummy round marked for verifying rounds in the drum... actual rounds are the same size, just have different tips
So from what I understand, this thing maps out a grid around the missile, and then puts 1 bullet in every square inch of that grid. Is that correct?
Also I can't wait for a video of our laser weapons. We've got what's basically a CIWS except it fires a laser at the missile. Some guy came in and gave us a lecture on it, I think it's too classified/still in beta stages to have any youtube videos of it though...

No it actually zeros in on the missile and tries to fire every round directly at it. It can actually track it's own rounds, so if it is missing, it will use continuous aim correction (CAC) to adjust where it is firing. It would waste way too many rounds trying to fire at a grid. As you can see in my video, it took about 470 rounds to neutralize the drone missile and tear it to shreds. If it had a live warhead, I'm sure it would have blown up faster, but I can't say for sure. Are you a CIWS tech? I heard of the laser version, but it was just an idea when I was still in the Navy.

I heard it got canceled.
They should put this up at south korean borders so that when North Korea invades they'll be fucked
how many bullets does that thing hold?
it sounded like a damn chainsaw even on my lowest sound setting, must be absolutely terrifying to be there in person standing next to it.
those videos where it was firing at night looked unreal, like it was shooting lasers that exploded or shit

To you and all others with ideas like this:
I'm not CIWS operator, but these would be terrible for solider/vehicle/soft-target engagements. Not only would you need a means to identify friendlies and non-soldiers (civilians, animals, a rolling tire); they obliterate their ammo reserves.
I'm sure a couple of well-operated .50s would cover an area way better than a CIWS spraying at fucking everything. :v:

plus not forgetting human judgement
IF you could get a perfect friendly detection system, how would a COMPUTER tell the deference between a NK troop who is attacking or a NK troop who is defecting?
that is a remarkably idiotic idea
Yeah it's almost as if he wasn't serious when he said it

The ones on the ship were loaded with 1500, I'm not sure if newer versions have bigger drums.
It is awesome to stand next to it when it fires, the concussion is insane! The night fire videos look like exploding lasers because it shoots tracer rounds every few rounds and they blow up to ensure they don't land on the ground and cause unwanted casualties. I've never worked on the land based ones, that's just what I've heard about them, so don't quote me on that piece of info

No, I'm not in the armed forces, some people just came in and gave a presentation to us at university. The Q&A session at the end was pretty funny though:
Student 1: What about this thing?
Rep: That's classified.
Student 2: So how does (other thing) work?
Rep: Classified.
Student 3: What about this blue thing?
Rep: Also classified.

You're thinking of the Boeing.
[editline]26th November 2012[/editline]
Actually, munchito, can I ask you something, how will this fare against speedboat attacks? I'm sure that as a navy guy you've heard of that scenario where some high ranking general posing as Iran in a wargame managed to take out the majority of the US's fleet with a handful of speedboats with explosives on them. Everyone's saying that these would be impractical against ground targets, but what about boats? The sea is a fairly flat area, so target acquisition would be a piece of cake. Seeing how fast this thing locks on to things and drops rounds, is this a practical defense against say, 50 explosive speedboats making a run for an aircraft carrier?
Seeing how volatile speedboats are, a couple rounds through the hull would make short work of one, I would think. Then it's just a matter of moving on to the next target, with an engagement lasting no longer than ~5 seconds per target.

The C-130's that carry the lasers are cool, the entire storage are is just filled with generators(or one massive one?) I heard it was canceled because the accuracy in testing was garbage.
Here are two views of my Phalanx CIWS (Close-in Weapon System) shooting down a drone missile while I was in the Navy. This was a 470 round burst that shredded the missile to pieces of scrap metal!

Out of curiosity, what makes it "your" CIWS?
I know guys in other branches that refer to stuff they operate (like a Abrams or an HMMWV) as "thiers", but the CIWS is pretty much automatic isnt it? Or does it have some sort of user control?

Same way a crew chiefs helicopter is "his" or the pilot of a C130, C130 is his. It's not actually theirs, but they operate/and/or maintain it.

Yeah I know, but since its an autonomous gun, I wondering what makes it his.
Im assuming its because he was assigned to maintain it but I figured I'd ask anyway :v:
I blew out my shoulder shooting a shotgun. Ill keep the real stuff for the professionals

I'm pretty sure there's a joystick override mode somewhere that lets you use it to spray targets like a deck gun.

I'm pretty sure it was cancelled just because of budget cuts. The accuracy wasn't that bad, if I recall correctly, it could take out a satellite in orbit.
[editline]26th November 2012[/editline]
Also it wasn't a C-130, it was a Boeing, and there wasn't a generator, they used vats of chemicals.
