Best plan of attack is to talk with him, explain to him how you understand weed is illegal, but for perhaps the wrong reason? Then tell him how you have never, and have no intention, on smoking outside of your house. Letting him know you understand the drug and its risks, and how you will handle it maturely, I don't see why he won't get you some. Hell, he will probably give you some for your birthday now.
