I'm looking to try and get both the Song of Ice and Fire books and the TV series this christmas. Since there are probably lots of people in here that have seen/read both, should I start out with Game of Thrones: the book or the series?
It doesn't really matter, as long as you watch both series and then read all the books, or vice-versa. The storylines are beginning to diverge enough to make it inconsequential which one you see first. Although most people will probably tell you to read the books.
TV show is great fun when you've read the books first. The books are given some amazing footing when you've watched the TV show first. Either way it's a win win, both are incredible.
I'm glad I watched the series first as I picture the people as I'm reading the books but the books are much much better.

The show messed up the looks of several characters massively. Jorah is supposed to have dark hair, not the fair blonde he has in the series, and he's supposed to be much uglier. Gregor in the show is more like the molehill that rides, he needs to be taller, broader and more muscular. Illyrio was way too small in the show, Jon's got black hair instead of the brown hair he is supposed to have (potentially important later), Dany and Viserys lacked the purple eyes and I could keep going on. The show's pretty true to the story so far (though deviations are starting) but a load of the characters look wrong. Better to have the mental image from the book and just ignore what the actors really look like.

The show is faster paced than the books, so it's easier to get into. Plus there were some scenes in the books they had to change or remove for budget/time reasons and I know that can ruin the enjoyment for some people if they read the books first.
No read books first. They're so much more in depth and watching the show first is lazy.
I started with the show because I was going on a road trip and needed ~20 hours of entertainment on short notice. Now Im getting the books for christmas because its one of the best stories in a tv show Ive ever seen.
Just a thought; [sp]Do you think Michelle Fairley still be the actress for lady stoneheart?(because she change so much.) And, how do you think they will do lady stoneheart? (makeup/cg)[/sp] Dunno how much of that i really need to spoiler-tag but better safe than sorry.
I hope so. Just like paint her [sp]grey and add a scar on her neck[/sp] I really hope someones joke of Robb's girlfriend taking over that role doesn't come true.
I actually hate how they turned a character who is more of a walking plot point, that just exists into someone who actually appears quite a bit. Reading the third book, I was actually glad that she didn't really have a point of view... or was really around at all. There was so much going on everywhere else that she didn't really need to be.
Of course with any mainstream success the question is always “What’s next?” and the anticipation for season three is building like soda in a freshly shaken bottle. After the strength of season two and getting past what Alfie worried would be “second album syndrome”, the third trip into Westeros even has him giddy. “I’m on a knife’s edge. I’m waiting to see . . . it’s pretty tortuous.” Whatever spoiler he’s just stopped himself from revealing, it must be a big one because he grins like a guilty child.
heheheh alfie
alfie alfie it rhymes with....algae?
heheheh alfie
[sp]They're moving Reek up to season three? There's a lot to consider there, a lot of plotlines to be fucked around with.[/sp]
Well he was gone the entire fucking 3rd book
[sp]Yeah, he didn't make an appearance until Roose came back to win the North. The only reason he was let out of the dungeon was because he needed to give 'Arya' away at her wedding. But in book three, there is no wedding. Well... Not that wedding at least. If they show his transformation from Theon to Reek, it might be interesting. And a good way to introduce Ramsay Snow, but I think getting flayed would get pretty repetitive.[/sp]
Tywin Lannister did, in the end, shit gold:
Do we get a pill that tells us where whores go?

I remember a major catch for me, with the show, was the fact that some crazy shit could happen any time. All the twists, the revelations, the intrigues, it had me hooked, and I watched it all in a matter of two days. Then, because I was so ecstatic about the whole thing, I read all the books. I know everything, and I still haven't finished season two. The excitement is gone. Can't wait for the next book though :v:
The actor they chose for Mance wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Was expecting someone who resembles the fanart of him by Amoka.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/18/game-of-thrones-episodes-lengthened_n_2323347.html Season 3 episodes will be each be longer by several minutes, meaning by the end of the season there'll be almost another episode of content!

I just read the part in A Feast For Crows [sp]Where Brienne is kind of eaten by Biter and then he gets stabbed through the mouth[/sp] and it was genuinely disturbing, I keep remembering it :/
Shame we probably won't see that in the tv series, It looks like all Tyrion has from the Blackwater is a little red scar and not [sp]A huge gash that took off most of his nose[/sp]
About to finish rereading the fifth book. I'm a terrible person because [sp]All I can think about during the last few Arya chapters is how it's becoming Assassin's Creed, with people informing her about her mark.[/sp]
