17?! But she's only just started having periods?!
nevermind, i'm retarded. she's 14.
You're underestimating the whole scale of Westeros, it's basically telling a highborn girl to go and ride 1.5k km with someone who terrifies the shit out of her, and has mocked her the whole time he has known her, telling her that all she believes (knights are all gallant people like Loras) is wrong and retarded and she's got to go with him through an area infested with bandits, a northern army (who won't know her on sight and will kill/rape first, ask questions never), the southern armies (who will want her dead or captured), the bloody mummers (hands and feet ahoy!), hoping that they don't meet the brotherhood without banners, the remains of Stannis' army or the mountain clans on the way back. Not to mention the search parties that would be sent out looking for a highborn girl (very identifiable due to height due to diet + lack of work in additon to the looks) along with a very identifiable man. (very tall, very scarred and a helm looking like a dog) Strikes me as perfectly reasonable to go with the hound, who might have had an ulterior motive to rape and kill her at any time for all she knows. Oh, and she was betrothed to Joffrey at the time and totally basically to say no to anyone due to trauma.
Fair enough; it's hugely dangerous. But she's still got plenty of stuff going on to make her hysterical enough for her escape to be something that could have foreseeably happen; that's all I'm saying.

If you were a 14 year old girl and a huge man covered in blood asked if you wanted to go on an adventure with him, what would you say? :P
"Can" is not the same as "Has". [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] Eh? It's been out for quite a while, hasn't it?
arrived at my house
I've been looking at the map of Westeros and have been trying to determine how long it is. Going by the fact that the Wall is 300 leagues long (900 miles), as pointed out by Sam in A Storm of Swords. After this I looked up a couple maps. On average the Wall would fit 10 times in Westeros (starting at the Wall and going down all the way to Dorne in a straight line) Simple math would show us that Westeros is 9,000 miles long (14,500km). The trip Sansa would make with the Hound would be 5,400 miles long (8,700km). Never quite realised how far it was from King's Landing to Winterfell. All these distances are as the raven flies.
Wow, I thought it was something like 1500km, and that's rediculously large. With those calculations, Westeros is about 2-3 times the distance from the UK to America. I'd agree with you on size, as I've just checked and Sam does say that, and it works out correctly. Now let's factor in the fact that Essos (Quarth, Pentos, Dothraki sea e.t.c are on Essos) is significantly larger, and Sothoryos is unknown in size atm, and we can conclude that George RR Martin doesn't have the best sense of scale :v:

I think he's done a marvellous job at that.
Wonder how long it'd take a dragon to fly around the world.
also it is "tv show cannon" that the free cities are east of westeros instead of south? kind of mucks up traders sailing from one side of westeros, going to a free city, then going to the other side
also it is "tv show cannon" that the free cities are east of westeros instead of south? kind of mucks up traders sailing from one side of westeros, going to a free city, then going to the other side
Not quite sure what you're trying to say, but Essos is located East of Westeros if we're going by the books.

My main issue is that I had the map of Westeros messed up with the map of The Wheel of Time, which messed up my perception of it all until the second reading of the series. I was convinced that Braavos whas where Tremalking is, and it all fucked up in some dodgy mess. Also, the name kind of gives it away, Westeros is west, Essos is east, and Sothoryos is south :v: Then the land of eternal winter or whatever it's called is north, totally breaking the naming conventions.
Then the land of eternal winter or whatever it's called is north, totally breaking the naming conventions.
That's because it's uncharted territory where no-one lives. The Wildlings only live on the outskirts of the northern area.
oh i always thought it was south of westeros (like europe is to england) :v: [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] guess i looked at a bad map once [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] or im just retarded
This is the best map I've encountered so far. http://www.sermountaingoat.co.uk/map/versions/speculative_map.jpg
See this for the official TV show map. http://viewers-guide.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/season2/#!/map/
Qarth is further away than I'd thought. Never looked at the inbook maps. Book 5 spoilers. [sp]Skagos is much, much closer to the North than I'd previously thought, though it's not the first time I'd studied for it. The culture and people on there gives the impression it'd be further away from the mainland, and as such would make it a more suitable place to hide Rickon and also give more reason for Davos to go there too. Still, G.R.R knows infinitely more than I.[/sp]
One of the strangest things about the geography of ASoIaF is that no-one talks about what's West of Westeros. You'd think that if it was just the Jade Sea / Qarth, then traders would sail West to get there. What's out there?

No one who has sailed there with the intent to discover new lands or whatever has ever returned. For them it's just endless ocean. [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] Well apparently there's a couple uninhabited islands a couple days west, but apart from that nothing.
I just finished the last book a couple days ago. Needless to say George R.R Martin is a chore for being such a slow writer
I just finished the last book a couple days ago. Needless. To say George R.R Martin is a chore for being such a slow writer
Robert Jordan wants a word with you, Martin is rather to the point IMO. Unless you mean the time taken to write the book.

I started watching the series last weeks and I'm about halfway through season 2. I feel ashamed for not watching it sooner, its as good as everyone said, I'm reading the books at the same time however and you really see how much they miss out.
Pretty sure I just saw Lena Headey (Cersei) at East Croydon station in London earlier today. She wandered off before I could ask her if it was her though ):
Just re-read Game of Thrones. Jesus the amount of foreshadowing in the first book is crazy. I'm not just talking about the first scene and the direwolf part. Even Greyjoy's rebellion is foreshadowed. Its also nice to be able to keep track of all the characters now that you know who is who.
Even Greyjoy's rebellion is foreshadowed
It is? I guess I didn't pick up on it
Somehow, the books are even better reading them a 2nd time.
Somehow, the books are even better reading them a 2nd time.
I notice something new every time
