• Why is life worth living for an atheist?

btw you don't have to be a theist to believe in a purpose to life or an afterlife
Actually, I believe becoming an atheist made me realize how important our ever-fleeing mortal lives are.
To be honest, living in paradise for an eternity would get boring pretty fast. I live for myself and the ones I care about. Atheists (myself included) live for life, when you die, there is no second chance, so you have to make this one count.
I always think about that. I'm scared of immortality in that sense.
Life is worth living because it is beautiful.
Life is just building a tower, knocking it down, cleaning up the mess, and then erasing the memory of having built the tower in the first place, it really does not matter at all
There's nothing wrong with enjoying the building of the tower.
No one mentionen sex yet? Oh wait this is facepunch

There are like 50 of these threads every day
I live for knowledge and pleasure.
Congratulations! You have existential depression! You have a choice, construct a meaning for yourself or die.
I can make other people happy.
When I read the title I smelled a troll.
I'd rather not know where I go when I die rather than going to a place of suffering and damnation, since that's where we are all going.
I just chug through life because I want to. I want to see what happens 10 years from now, I want to see what sort of fucked up shit I will encounter. I want to see if I can change people's opinions. I want to see if I can further society. I want to see if I will amount to a failure or a symbol of mankind. It's not really a question of why you want to live, it is a question of how you want to live. Edit: I would also like to say, music takes a huge part of my life. So it's nice to listen to music that gives you an extra boost of confidence. Example of this would be -
Just because we don't know our meaning for life, doesn't mean there isn't one. So I dedicate my life to just helping our species in my own small way so we can figure it out one day. And if we decide there isn't one, then I can be as depressed and suicidal as I like. Until then, I have no excuse not to live life.
Love
Because life is usually fucking awesome.
I'll just live as I should. I'll be a good person, see what happens with technology and try to experience it all first hand. It doesn't matter what happens after you die, it only matters what you did before you died.
I'm not gonna give you the satisfaction of trying to explain why I'm still here; I'm not even convinced you're not trolling. What I will say is that if you need your God and some happy-go-lucky story of cosmic destiny and meaning so you can feel warm and snug at night with a feeling of contentment, and that the whole thing is actually part of some vast plan...not only are you weak, using it as a crutch for your own failed confidence in yourself as a viable and eternally important entity, but you also need to look at yourself and your lifestyle very very hard. If you can't find a meaning apart from God, then atheists who are happy with their lot in life are not the ones with the problem at all.
Okay, good answers. I'm not trolling guys.
Why is it worth living for a theist? You have immortality after you die so just kill yourself do it now
Thank god they brought back the zing rating. These posts are why.
I don't live my life with hopes of going to "a better place" when I die. I live my life for the excitment and pleasure that it brings.
OH FUCK YOU'RE RIGHT :suicide:

Stop being emo op the reason I eat is because it tastes good, the reason I make friends is because they can make me laugh, the reason I read books is because I like learning and I can't do any of that when I am dead.
Because we're not bogged down by the constant lies they tell us. Also science makes WAAAY more sense
where does religion play in all this?
The way I see it is that in life, you have probably approximately 100 years to do something awesome. The more entertainment, knowledge and wonder you get in that time, the better. Yeah, it all goes when you die. So? It was brilliant while it lasted.
To tell Christians that they worship a Brown skinned Jew who was a poor carpenter.
I've come to the conclusion that life is just as valuable as not living because you will eventually die and the impact you've left along with the world will die too, the universe will eventually die, and there's no chance of a legacy ultimately surviving, so why does anything matter? What ever you do will just be forgotten anyway

Infinite life is impossible, because eventually the universe's supply of hydrogen will burn out and stars will no longer be able to live on, neither will life. You can't really live life to the fullest, I mean, it doesn't matter if you don't remember it, and nobody will
Well, you say life is all so very pointless, but there's obviously a reason why you're still around to keep checking up on this thread. Why is that? Procrastination?
