• Why is life worth living for an atheist?

If anything atheist's might experience more than a christian because they live this life and don't worry about the "next".
I've come to the conclusion that life is just as valuable as not living because you will eventually die and the impact you've left along with the world will die too, the universe will eventually die, and there's no chance of a legacy ultimately surviving, so why does anything matter? What ever you do will just be forgotten anyway
It doesn't matter, welcome to Nihilism. Mind you that goes for everyone not just atheists. Or you know, you could live because it's enjoyable and sure as fuck beats not existing.
To quote what I said in this thread
I look forward to, as was already said, tomorrow. To having fun with my friends, the people I love and care about. I look forward to one day being able to work in a field that interests me and allows me to further advance my understanding of the universe around us, how it works, what makes everything 'tick', why things are the way they are. I look forward to, maybe one day, doing great things with my life. Using the development of technology for good, to better the life of all humans everywhere, now and in the future. And yeah, one day I'll die. One die Earth will die. The sun will die. Every last star will fizzle out of existence given enough time. Everything that ever was might simply cease to exist in its entirety. Space and time may simply vanish into complete nothingness just as they once came into existence from it. But, fuck it. I'm here right now. I'm conscious. I see the universe through my own two eyes. I can think. I feel. I experience happiness, sadness, love, pain. I'm a god damn statistical anomaly; the odds of everything that happened happening EXACTLY as they did to allow me to exist are astoundingly low, yet, lo-and-behold, I'm here! I DO exist against all odds. Even though it is all pointless I'm gonna try to make the most of it. I'm going to try to live life to the fullest and be a good person and allow the others around me to have a good life, too. We may not have anything PERMANENT to work towards, but, unlike some people may be led to believe that doesn't make us hateful, bad people. On the contrary, many, hell, most of us are probably decent human beings.
Oh wow... So you basically say, just because someone who doesn't belief in a "God" and "afterlife" sees his life being useless? Seriously, I doubt it. Believing in something doesn't give your life more a sense than not believing. It just may help a few people going over it and facing their death easier. But this applies not to everyone.
If anything, we should be asking Christians why they feel life is worth living when they have an eternity of bliss to get to?
The value of life is life.
I honestly believe life is not worth living if you are an atheist, I am an atheist and all I do all day long is sit at my computer. Maybe I go take a shit or a piss sometimes, or eat or smoke but aside from that it is computer. I am unemployed and not getting anything out of life yet. I believe that all my accomplishments and achievements are unjustified because I will have nothing to show for them after I am dead. Life is stressing and depressing, you work your ass off, you have a family and work your ass off even harder. Then you die. The end. Not very fair or worth the effort is it now?
Pissing off the believers
Because you are alive! In my opinion Atheists have more of a reason to live. You only get one life, they aren't living to get into a nice version of the second one.
There doesn't have to be an universal meaning of life. All I know is that I am here, and this is my life so I'll do the best I can with it. You may ask any father in this round world what he lives for and he'll most likely respond; "I live for my family". That's what I want to do, raise a family.
It's not worth living. We are just programmed to want to live. If you just want to die then all you have done is gotten past the slavery your genes have imposed on you. Your freedom is oblivion.
Life is fun!
Make life better for the future however small it may be. You might not develop some incredible new technology or cure some terrible disease but in whatever you're doing you should be helping out somebody else in however small way which will ultimately contribute to something good. Be happy in making people like you also happy even long after you're gone. Rather than "If I follow these rules I'll get everything I could ever want". Religion is pretty selfish in comparison.
To have fun :downs:
Because sex is awesome

You pretty much find a goal to waste your life on and try to make it fit within a comfortable timeframe.
Why eat if you're just going be hungry again in a few hours?

Hedonism ftw
What's that? a religion related thread that hasn't gone completely pear shaped?
Death hurts the people around the one dying more
I discovered this a while ago. The reason I didn't end my life was because I decided I could either A: Kill myself and it will all be over, or B: Do whatever the fuck I want and have fun while doing, while also helping other people, then if anything gets too terrible where the bad outweighs the good, refer to scenario A.
knowledge, one day we might be able to live forever
But if we can't do it in our own lifetime, why do it for the rat bastards a millennium from now?
Suicide doesn't mean you get into to "heaven" in all religions. Sometimes its the opposite. I've heard it preached often that in Christianity, suicide leads to hell. So, doesn't work in that sense. Now in Islam and some other religions, you have me beat.
Just do something like drive stupidly, that's not suicide if someone else crashes into you.
Oh and, as for just people altogether, I'm not seeing the end coming anytime soon. (InB4 2012, people will move on through that, too)
What's that? a religion related thread that hasn't gone completely pear shaped?
The idea of religion threads descending swiftly into the tumultuous waves of a fecal ocean has become somewhat the opposite of a self-fulfilling prophecy; people are so worried about it turning into a shitstorm they do well at preventing it.
What's that? a religion related thread that hasn't gone completely pear shaped?
It's happened at least one other time since I've joined. That thread made it to around page 6 or 7 before the shitstorm began. I believe it was locked by page 9 too.
