Because dopamine among other chemicals released by the brain make me feel good. Knowing about the process doesn't mitigate the result.
As for a "purpose", I'd like to make myself and others happy. I'd like to contribute something meaningful to society, and if that only amounts to making others happy, it's good enough for me.
I thought that a big part of Atheism is that since there is no heaven then you just work as hard as you can while you're alive in order to get as close to a real heaven as you can. Thats at least what the official top of the ladder atheists want you to think.
sure everything doesn't matter, but that doesn't mean you cant have fun while you're around

Echo Echo. I think we got a evil twin scenario going on here. He just wants his opinion shoved up your throats.
Well, aren't you a fuckin' downer.

Heaven and afterlife in general isn't purely theistic or religious. You can be an atheist and believe in a sort of heaven.

Yea but I bet its rare to see one
Here we go again.
Yes you're going to die at some point. But it doesn't make it worthless.
If you have a candy bar, Don't say "Well it's going to be eaten or get rotten, so I might as well throw it away." Fuck no.
Also
"Gee, I have a girlfriend, but I'm gonna be separated from her at one point, so I might as well break up with her now."
Taking it further...
"I have a puppy, but It's gonna die at one point. GET THE AK-47."
I go off the until they can full explain us existing you just live. As in enjoy life and love and that crap.
I'm not an atheist, I'm an agnostic, but I think the same should go for atheists: If you do not know the origins of the universe, then it creates an extreme fascination and curiosity for the billions of different possibilities of the universe's origins and the afterlife. Leaving religious convictions(notice the word "convict") allows an entirely new school of thought regarding everything. It's much more than "You die and rot in the ground."
This thread makes me feel better about killing all those people.
I'm not reading through every reply, so what I'm about to say has probably already been said.
I believe a lot of atheists value their lives more because they know they only have one, so they better use that chance to live it to the best. While many people who have a religion believe "I've got the afterlife to look forward to, I don't have to do much now but repent and spread the word about Jesus.
I'm not saying thats everyone. A lot of atheists feel the need to tell everyone religion isn't true, and in turn don't look at it in the right way. I try to have a happy life and spend as much time with my family as I can. A lot of religious people will do the same though, and still enjoy life with their god in it to make them happy. It's different for every person, some may want a god to have hope, while others don't want to risk any disappointment.
I'm an agnostic myself, because I honestly don't know. Science may say no, but I never know. And when I die either I won't even notice because I'll cease to think, or I'll be whisked away to heaven or hell depending on which religion is right. But I'm not gonna dwell on that, I'm going to do what I want in life.
I've come to the conclusion that life is just as valuable as not living because you will eventually die and the impact you've left along with the world will die too, the universe will eventually die, and there's no chance of a legacy ultimately surviving, so why does anything matter? What ever you do will just be forgotten anyway
Everything you do will have an impact. If you're homeless, people will see you as inspiration. Some people may even talk to you, and learn about you, thus making you valuable.
You may serve people fast food. You make their life easier and provide a convenience for others.
You may work as an Aerospace Engineer at Nasa, designing the next ship capable of taking astronauts to new planets, advancing our race beyond what was previously capable.
We all leave a legacy behind, it may be different than what we expect, but there's no denying. All we can do is spend our time wisely, and enjoy it while it lasts.
Now here's a question: Why is life worth living as a religious person? Heaven sounds a lot better than life, so what's the point? Also, if God isn't real, does he make life better? Is your life improved by the false belief that dying is nothing to be afraid of, or if you believe he isn't real, does it make life better knowing that one day, you will be gone, you will never have to suffer forever, never be bored after doing everything that can be done, you can finally be done. Forever.
Something to think about mate.
Oh, and to reproduce. Children make it all worth it, or so I'm told.

Sex, music, friendship, food, drink...Do you really need reasons?
atheists have more choice, power and control in there lives then anybody who believes in god/higher power because they don't have to worry about repercussion and only live by there conscience rather then a code written by some dude who got high on a mountain and got lost in a desert....
To sum it up in a few words:
We are incredibly lucky to exist at all, and there's nothing after our short time in life.
Look at the brightside. You are alive! The next thing you know in like 50 or 60 or 80 years (if you are lucky) is just a long dream/blackness. Death is unstoppable, but you can be too. Be the person you want to be because there is no telling when death will hit.
I thought that a big part of Atheism is that since there is no heaven then you just work as hard as you can while you're alive in order to get as close to a real heaven as you can. Thats at least what the official top of the ladder atheists want you to think.
We are not a collective mass spoken for by one higher up.
Atheism isn't a fucking organisation, some live to hurt others and get their kicks from that, some enjoy helping people, some will spend their entire life looking over one person making sure they are okay and don't get hurt, and some people want to climb a mountain upside down whilst eating a hundred bags of skittles.
We are the temporary custodians of the molecules that comprise us, better make good use of this brief moment of awareness before we are broken down by the universe again to serve some other purpose.
What's with all this philosophical stuff flying about? Whatever happened to just living for the sake of living? I'm atheist purely because I'm to fucking lazy to subscribe to any organised religion.
Why is it worth living for a theist? You have immortality after you die so just kill yourself
do it now
Because it's a sin?

Fixed.
To make a thread about it.
I know it won't last forever but I just like to live while I can.
Life is worth living for an atheïst because there is no religion to spoil the good things.
there are just so many beautiful girls here
Life is utterly pointless. That doesn't stop us however, does it? Enjoy the time you have and don't waste it by killing yourself or something.
