I exaggerated. Spend some time in another country though, preferences change.

were you in hong kong or mainland
I don't know how you can get uncomfortable from that. My girlfriend is Chinese, of course my preferences are going to change.

Mainland.
Japanese learners are generally fucking weird, so much so that maybe only people on the internet know I speak at all. I remember my first day in Japanese class at Uni and it was uncomfortable to say the least. The class ended up moving at a snails pace, and whenever it was time for conversation practice everyone would just start talking about anime in English.
I'm coming up on my second year of study and I have to say it's the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Went backpacking across Japan for 2 months last year, working on farms for food and shelter using only Japanese. Also because my girlfriend speaks zero English, I could say that my Japanese is useful there too. Also planning on taking the JLPT 1 or 2 this December which will hopefully allow me to transfer my consulting career to Japan or at least work remotely.
I'm glad I said fuck it and went for it. If you're planning on starting Japanese or any Language you gotta have some free time if you wanna progress quickly. Also don't take Japanese classes

idk ive taken 3 classes now, and they havent been so bad
they've actually been pretty helpful for the most part, although yeah i do agree; the classes move very slowly and you meet a lot of weird people in them.

SHOGENAI
My Japanese class is largely Chinese ladies so thankfully my learning experience is pretty alright. I'll agree that it's a pretty slow-paced class but because of who I am as a person it's either that or not learning at all.
I suppose it would be more useful to learn Chinese instead, but honestly, I just like the language, and that's the main reason I am learning it. It sounds nice. The kana is pretty. Kanji is hell, but that can't be helped.
i feel i got lucky with my japanese class. there were some cool dudes in it and the weird kids sat on the opposite side of the room from my. my sensei kept them in check pretty well, too, so they rarely had a chance to be weird.
meanwhile in my class i had a guy who wore a naruto jumpsuit to the final, and there's this guy in my current class who's basically a blonde ash ketchum.
he's got the hat, the fingerless gloves, the vest- everything, i swear
In the japanese class I took, I was THE white guy in the room. Everyone else was chinese exchange students with millionaire parents.

I'm just learning on my own, it feels much more efficient and fun. Will do the second half of the japanese course next year for easy credits
tbh honest the Naruto jumpsuit would be pretty funny as a self depreciating joke but not many people could pull it off. It'd have to be someone super confident and not at all look like a weeaboo.
Jesus, I feel like I've been blessed. My Japanese class here in Rhode Island is full of pretty goddamn "normal" people, i.e. no cringy weaboos. In our Japanese culture class, we all had to pick a topic to present as a power point, and not one picked anime or manga (though there were references to them sometimes).
There was this one smartass in the first semester who liked asking rhetorical questions to the Japanese teacher that he already knew, and because of his speech impediment took forever to ask questions.
"sensei, why does this kanji's radical look like this?"
"I couldn't say."
"Well here's why." *proceeds to waste class time explaining it, teacher is too nice to shut him up*
One day he got genuinely upset when sensei was really pressed for time helping us review for our mid term and told him to please study the handout and not explain the differences of the wa vs. ga particles...in the first goddamn semester of basic Japanese.
