I don't see how anyone could hate this.
it sounds like a bunch of annoying beeps and boops
I dislike techno for the same reason that I dislike rap. It's just a personal taste thing. That said, I don't hate it blindly enough that I'll refuse to listen to it. I enjoy a lot of techno. (Mostly Video Game soundtrack stuff.) Stuff like the sourceforts theme And a lot of music from Darwinia. I don't know if I like them because I associate them with the great games I've played, or simply because the music is great. But I really dislike the fact that the music is "perfect." Since it's a computer that's keeping the timing, it's always going to be flawless. It just takes a lot of the personal feel away from the music if you ask me.
"Is a 4/4 kick too much for some people to handle? " It's too little, in terms of complexity. Some people like music that is interesting. I don't hate techno, just house, trance, and EDM. Breakbeat and chiptune can be badass, though, and so can "experimental" electronic music. Aphex twin is shitty, by the way.
I don't know anyone who doesn't like techno. I like Kraftwerk and Afex Twins.
some things people are not getting about dance music it is meant for dancing to, who gives a toss if it's repetitive, it's meant to be to keep you dancing to, you don't want the track to change completely half way through a chorus, it would confuse the dancefloor and the thump of the kick is to keep the whole track going, nobody is going to dance to a track that has absolutely no drive at all as for lyrics nobody want's to hear some complex vocals in dance tracks, keep it simple and cheerful to get the dancefloor singing along
So you're saying all techno is used as dancing music for raves with the teenage girls flinging glowsticks around? This is some techno I've been listening to lately: this one is like a bunch of hip hop producers turned into robots that have been overloaded with electricity
I mainly dislike techno because of it's lack of human qualities, lack of entertaining live performances, and lack of significant cultural following/impact. It's just sort of mindless :/ Doesn't really make you think about anything really, sorta shallow.

A lot of electronic music (the good kind that you listen to with headphones, not at raves) forces you to take the abstract beats and rhythm and convert them into emotions or some sort of message. Or just sit there and enjoy the song, and don't hate it because it doesn't have some guy singing about his girlfriend
So you're saying all techno is used as dancing music for raves with the teenage girls flinging glowsticks around?
nope, just some house genres, vocal trance and some hard dance genres

I wish everyone would actually listen to this rationale when I try to explain this to them. My fucking step brother basically says, "It's not music because there's no beat, guitar, or singing." Sorry that the beat isn't as obvious and that the emotion is deeper than something that is explicit with it in its words. ugh.
There is no soul
I second this man.
How can you say that's repetitive? Yes of course some elements have to be repeated, or else it wouldn't be a song, just a compilation of various random sounds.
some things people are not getting about dance music it is meant for dancing to, who gives a toss if it's repetitive, it's meant to be to keep you dancing to, you don't want the track to change completely half way through a chorus, it would confuse the dancefloor and the thump of the kick is to keep the whole track going, nobody is going to dance to a track that has absolutely no drive at all as for lyrics nobody want's to hear some complex vocals in dance tracks, keep it simple and cheerful to get the dancefloor singing along
That is actually one of the reasons I hate electronic music, it is so incredibly shallow.
There is no soul
/agree
Okay, people who complain that electronic music is too repetitive have obviously never heard anything but trance music. [editline]10:26AM[/editline]
There is no soul.
Yeah, uh no. No soul? That's a bunch of bullshit. Why is there "no soul"? Once again, you've probably only heard traditional repetitive club music that's more dancey than artistic. Try and tell me that this has no soul: Or this: There is incredibly complex and soulful electronic music out there, you're just not hearing it. And before you go off on "it has no soul" because it's not played live, it might surprise you to know that an electronic musician can do a lot of improvising if he sets it up right.
the same reason people hate all other genres (when they do, that is). they just don't like it.
I think people who dislike electronic music in generality are just biased because either it doesn't have vocals or because it's not performed by "real" instruments. Or because all they've heard is poppy trance music. Electronic music has so many variations that it seems almost impossible to hate all of it without being biased over some kind of malformed principles of what they think constitutes "music".
What i mean with "it has no soul" is that it's not all about the song itself, it's how you perform it, how you sing it, how you play it, you gotta have a feeling while doing the song. And since techno often isn't done live... well, then i'd say it has no soul.
I'll restate the fact that electronic music CAN be performed and improvised on the fly in a live setting. Is it always? No. But that still doesn't mean it has no "soul". "How you perform it, how you sing it, and how you play it" sounds like you're just referring to visual flash and the act of actually doing something to make the sound. And that's beside the fact that literally everything can be done in electronic music that can be done with acoustic music (so to speak) when it comes down to actually making the music, and a lot of times electronic composers WILL incorporate live instruments into their recordings. But besides, when you listen to a rock band (not watching them live or a music video, just listening to it) you don't SEE the way the band plays, sings, or performs it, so that point is completely null. If you listen to music FOR the music then it IS all about the song itself.
for those who say it has no soul or emotion, here: and just about anything from VNV nation.
I don't hate Techno. I like a couple of songs from Pendulum.
i mainly dislike techno because of it's lack of human qualities by that logic, acoustic music has no human qualities either. lack of entertaining live performances not sure how to respond to this, other than "you're dumb." and lack of significant cultural following/impact do you live under a rock? it's just sort of mindless :/ no, it's not.
I don't hate Techno. I like a couple of songs from Pendulum.
I see we have a true follower of Electronic Music, men. Listen to this person, he knows his shit.
they are the best dnb group everr

I still liked it though, it wasn't "Daft punk 3rd generation" repetitive in-a-bad-way IMO. [editline]01:31AM[/editline]
and just about anything from VNV nation.
Yess, I love the song Dark Angel for example: So. Damn. Good. That said there's tons of VNV nation songs I really don't care for. Sometimes their music tends to get really "preachy" on the whole "dark" themes.

Many (not all) techno songs are just kinda...flat musically. A bunch of beats that don't really differentiate themselves from other techno song. Lack of any deep value or meaning. Just headache music really. BUT, as shown by some of the posts here , there are good techno artists like VNV Nation (and The Crystal Method if they count?), with actual depth and unique beats and out-there lyrics. Just like every other genre of music today, you have to get past the shit to find the good stuff.
cause they are jealous of how awesome and energy full it is
