War was never noble.
War! HUUURGH! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOOOOOR! What disgusts me about the human race is that we can go to war over the most petty things.
War is not meant to be honourable, fun, or clean, it is a way of attempting to extend your power over someone else.
War is not meant to be honourable, fun, or clean, it is a way of attempting to extend your power over someone else.
No it's not, war is just hard-coded into our nature, All humans do is kill each other, War is worthless.
Nuclear Weapons is what has ruined war, not guns.
It seems like guns have taken away all the honor and nobility of war. Where once it was heroic knights valiantly engaged in hand-to-hand fighting for their King or Queen, now it's just illiterate peasantry shooting each other from hundreds of metres away. No more strong castles and legendary sieges. No more Lords of the Realm on great horses charging headlong into the enemy. No more legendary swords made by master craftsmen. Sigh. War has lost all its Romance.
Go back to playing fantasy games. War never had romance, War never was noble or honorable. Sure people can have honorable actions during war. Wars that took place during the time of heroic knights where just as bad as the wars we have today, if anything they're worse.
No it's not, war is just hard-coded into our nature, All humans do is kill each other, War is worthless.
My God it makes me rage when people say this.
Nuclear Weapons is what has ruined war, not guns.
Not at all. Nuclear weaponry is just another pitiful disgusting way we've infuckingvented that will eventually end us all. Like the gun, Or the cannon, Or the missile.
Today when guns are used in the military, civilians during war doesn't stand a chance fighting back as they had during the medieval times. But then again they didn't stand much chance anyway I can admit that war was a lot more interesting during the medieval times though.
Nuclear Weapons is what has ruined war, not guns.
Kind of. Nuclear weapons made war impossible to conduct between two nuclear weapon-wielding nations.
Everyone pretty much said it here, nothing great about war. Not then, not now, not ever. In any army you're somewhat brainwashed into becoming a killing machine. They make you think what your doing is good for whatever reason. Someone can tell you killing someone with a sword is more noble but in the end their is nothing glorious about it. Best example that comes to mind for me is the crusades. You can't tell me it's "respectable" via Honor or whatnot
Hell, war involves death, bombing the other country to hell. In other words: WAR. NEVER. CHANGES.
War is useful as it helps to improve technology and helps us to learn lessons and gain treaties of war.
In the future soldiers will be replaced by robots. and Craig Charles will provide commentary
War has never been nobel. I always thought being nobel was to spare/save peoples life, not take them.
Uhh. In the middle ages, wars were fought by bands of mercenaries hired by a lord or powerful person to destroy the armies of their oponents. These armies would rape and pillage and raze villages. Knights were a rare breed, few and far between. Most of the soldiers were simply lackeys or peasents forced to go into combat wearing a leather cap and with a wooden club.
In the early middle ages, germanic and celtic lords had traditional bodyguard units which fought as heavy cavalry. Their allegiance wasn't bought with money, but they did start receiving land in return for their services. Later on this system evolved to feodalism, where minor lords swore oaths to their kings and promised to bring so and so many knights and soldiers should he rally. They weren't mercenaries because they couldn't choose whom they fought for. Only in the late middle ages - after the hundred years' war - did mercenary armies emerge.
OP
I agree with most of that, war used to be a thing of strength and skill, swordsmen, archers , knights and so on... now its just hurr point and shoot, you just aim vaguely in the general direction of a group of people and you'll most likely hit someone
Nuclear Weapons is what has ruined war, not guns.
You can't "ruin" war. It's not a game.
Swords were pretty cool and required skill but hey now it's all about who has a bigger bomb (dick). Anyway, gave you a box cause I'm riding the bandwagon
I don't see nukes flying around everywhere, Kymandu. Yes, guns are worse than Swords. But guns also take skill.

War has lost all its Romance.
First off, honor and nobility is a load of horse shit and should be kept to fairy tales, we are not a land of unicorns and mythical dragons to be slain by gallant knights, this is the modern world where if anyone opposes your world view, you blow their fucking head off. The entire post makes me question your mental stability. Our world has out grown the need for hand to hand combat and impenetrable fortresses, and horses still have a purpose, glue and horseback rides. You are trying to live the fantasy life with damsels in distress and epic quests to take forth. Let it go, the times are long gone and are nothing more than fictitious tales and myth.
I prefer war before they upgraded it to the source engine, now it's just filled with whiny 12 year olds who don't work as a team.

Especially skill.
Let it go, the times are long gone and are nothing more than fictitious tales and myth.
If they're long gone, they once were. If they're nothing more than fictitious tales and myth, they never were. [editline]07:46PM[/editline]
No. It's still all about strength and skill today. Especially skill.
It has never been about an individual's skill, but rather how people work as a group. However conflicts have become smaller in scale lately, where an individual's effort is more pronounced.
But guns are gangsta :c00l:
War, war never changes. Yeah, I'm serious with it. Where's the difference?? Nowadays you put metal into other people's bodies using gun powder, not your muscles.
I agree with the OP.
I love it when Americans talk about medieval history.
Goddammit, you see how you make us look when you start talking about fairy tale shit?
