I'm sure you'll love Scotland, and you get the added bonus of the many Facepunch meetups in Edinburgh. :v:
Glasgow was and probably still is the murder/stab capital of the world.
You should come by sometime :)
I heard Nessie was looking for a good fistfight

can't wait!
Come to Glasgow. It's a very friendly place and you won't get stabbed.

No we don't, get fucked.
Get a taste for Whisky!
If you go to the East coast take plenty of bug spray. The midges hunt in packs there.
I'm a student living in Dundee.
It's nice. It has it's rough areas like any city but it's decent enough.
As for attractions, we've got the first British ship to sail to the Antartic, the RSS Discovery. It's the main tourist attraction in Dundee, it's got a decent museum and you can get onto the ship (built in 1901) and look around quite freely.
The city centre is the nicest and generally friendliest place to hang around, there's some decent cafés and bars. Up on the west end of town (up river) is the University, and it's dominated by mainly students. The campus is nice enough, and the student union is pretty fantastic for nights out.
St Andrews is around a 30 minute bus ride over the River Tay which is lovely, it's got fantastic beaches there too. Just remember to wrap up. There's quite a lot to see and do over there, the Abbey is quite something. Here's a couple of photos I took there in summer.

You can also walk up Law Hill in Dundee for some stunning views of the surrounding areas and the river.

You should definitely check out the Dundee Contemporary Arts too http://www.dca.org.uk/
They have lots of cool exhibitions, foreign films and cult classics.
There's also the McManus gallery, which is a stunning building http://www.mcmanus.co.uk/ Pretty small museum and gallery, but really nice stuff. You could get round it in an hour or two.

You can also go for walks along the Tay bridge, the bridge itself is about a mile long. If you time it right you can see some pretty stunning sunsets.

I'd also highly recommend getting a bus through to Glasgow or Edinburgh for at least a day or two. They both have so much to offer, most of which you'll be able to find online. I'm from Glasgow myself, so if you have any questions about that feel free to ask.
If possible, look into heading a little further north into the Highlands. It's stunning. Buses run from Dundee to Fort William twice a day at least, which is the heart of the highlands.

As for the scottish stereotypes, most people are friendly... and won't stab you. If you can get a hold of some guidebooks, they'll let you know where the more cosmopolitan areas of each city are which tend to be extremely friendly and creative places.
Last minute tips;
- Try haggis, it's not as gross as it sounds.
- Try Irn-Bru (pronounced iron brew) ... drink of the gods.
- Go to at least one highland pub, i recommend the King's House Hotel or the Drovers Inn.
- Wrap up, it's freezing this time of year.
- You wont need insect repellent.
If you've got any more questions feel free to PM me. I'm pretty busy with uni, this is my final year, but if you're on your own and need somebody to show you around or give you some places to visit I'm sure me and my mates could help you out.
Scotchair I live 10 minutes from the Duncan of Jordanstone college
Say whaaaaaaat, where abouts man? I'm at DoJ studying animation. Are you at the uni?
Also OP, didnt read it properly and now I realise you'll be here for a few years. Where are you staying? do you have accommodation sorted?
I have actually applied to the Duncan of Jordanstone college and will start in September, if they offer me a place.
Yes! Accomodation sorted! I'm coming up tomorrow night with my friend. Wow I didn't expect to find students from the same uni on this forum!
I'm at west park flats studying computer science at dundee uni

Awesome stuff, is it for the general first year?
Do you have living accommodation sorted? If you're arriving with nothing official sorted I might be able to offer you and your friend a couple of sofas to stay on for a couple of nights if you need it.

Ninjad, glad you've got a place sorted. We should all go for a pint some time!

Thank you, but everything's fine we are sorted out. We are staying in a shared house.
I have applied to the Digital Film course, but the uni says I should do a general foundation year. That's not right because I already have a Diploma and a rich art portfolio. I will discuss this matter with them when I arrive though. What part of the city you live in? I'm like north east sort of. I'm not sure, I've never been there.
They're called Neds in Scotland
In Edinbrugh we call them both.
I think neds are normally the traditional "Umbro and Bucky" types, I normally use chav to refer to the fake tan and chinos type
I normally use chav to refer to the fake tan and chinos type
I think the word for that is "homosexual"
I think the word for that is "homosexual"
No, the correct term is ''daft wanker''.
dont look them in the eyes, they take it as a threat and its their natural instinct to protect their cubs
There's great takeaways over here too.

This should give you a glimpse into Scotland's bright and brutal history
Get plenty of warm clothes! I wore four layers of hoodies here in SW Wales and was still freezing.
Aberdeen is a nice place. But yeah, scotland's full of students, many of them from Europe, so you should fit in fine.
[editline]16th January 2012[/editline]
Stay away from people wearing these and you'll be fine.

Scotland is the best country in the world. Period.
I lived in a small town and was basically surrounded by the country. Lots of history and wonderful scenery. I hate to feed the stereotype us scots have, but try to take one whiskey distillery tour and do some tastings. It is magic how that shit is made.
When I went to Islay i went to the world famous Bowmore distillery. Islay was an awesome place as is, i stayed for a week or so in a croft. Only thing around me was the land-owner and his livestock.

I'd love to do a tour of Islay some day
As with all travel, stay safe, try to hit the important stuff you planned for but if you see something that looks interesting go for it.
Have fun!
Nevermind. This advice is more for like a short trip. You should change the title to "Moving to Scotland..."

I live in a small town in Tuscany surrounded by the country with also lots of history and scenary. But judging by photos it's very different, there don't seem to be many trees.

Trees are the spawn of witchcraft.
I made a thread just like this in Spring of last year.
You'll love it regardless of where you go. Go visit the highlands... they are astonishing.
I heard dundee are big on the sheep shagging
