That's a technique used to attract attention to the subject, but it isn't nearly subtle enough in that photo.

I like your pics Brian, you have a flair for it. But often people get mistaken by having lots of light gear, and having talent. You have both, but showing off you light gear etc. is a bit wack in my eyes.

One question Brian. Why don't you tell your friends how to pose? Nobody needs to be a pro model to pose good. Tell them a joke or something to get them smiling. Give them directions of how to place their legs/arms whatever to your liking to create more interesting shots. As you admitted yourself, these are all really just "So I went out today and brought with my friend and took some pics, you like? Lol". You have great light setups and good technique and control of your camera, but you haven't done anything different than you usually do. You have generic compositions that works well but simply aren't interesting and their faces usually always are identical in every shot and lacks emotion. There is no need to blame it on them just being your friends, that should just improve it as it is easier to talk to them and direct them if you know them rather than them being a stranger. And a good portfolio shouldn't contain 100 photos that are relatively identical.
