I think that the position we're in right now is necessary and normal for any society to grow into that 'peaceful and mindful society' that you talked about. I guess you could say it's our period of self-doubt and introspection, like an angsty teenager.

We will always look at the negative aspects of our surroundings through a magnifying glass, yes there are problems but even poverty today is better than wealth 800 years ago, we are always going to grow, the only thing that will stop us is if something happens fast enough to wipe us out.
