a scene isn't meant to look 'cinematic' if you're aiming for that you're doing it wrong you want your scene to look how you want it to look - you want it to look the best for your story i mean, if you're shooting an office scene a 'cinematic' look isn't always gonna work, you'd aim for it to be nice and soft and toplit. if you're shooting a commercial about a guy who uses some new tool to improve his productivity and it makes him an incredibly strong bloke, you'd think about doing some spot onto him and his surroundings and make the background rly dark so he's coming out and the light is aimed at him [editline]24th August 2014[/editline] i wanted that first scene to look like a school prom, so i went for harsh light to reflect off the silver streamers like those PAR cans you get in old school halls. i stuck two 800w redheads off on the right and left hand sides, and the camera left one had a bit of diffusion on it so their skin texture wasn't too harsh.

Im not very clued up on cinematography as much as other parts of media, But your always going to have to take into account your different camera angles, lighting ect I finished GCSE Media and im now going onto college to study it, during that time I learnt a lot about "Mise en scene".
like a shite school prom, i must add. low budget. 1996. local authority. my old primary school was a big inspo for that look, and to that end we hired an old 1970s church hall. some things like the emergency exit lights and doors wasn't perfect, but i didn't have the time or crew to replace them.

good lord that's far bigger crew than i'm used to and way more equipment we fit ours in 2 backpacks+tripod bag+dslr shoulder rig
good lord that's far bigger crew than i'm used to and way more equipment we fit ours in 2 backpacks+tripod bag+dslr shoulder rig
my camera gear fits in my royal mail bag usually (see here) and that's a manfrotto compact tripod for handheld, canon 6d and a few lenses, but the lights are fucking heavy and i had to take em from the screen academy in merchiston in edinburgh to outside glasgow. three trains and a taxi later, i got the fucking things home. a lot of the grad films used hire vans and shit like that, but i'm a purely public transport/taxi type for now.
well for one you're never gonna get a "cinematic looking scene" without proper glass/camera you're probably shooting on an iphone correct
You guys have know idea to what I am saying. I am saying that I thought Codename created that film to test his abilities with a camera. [editline]24th August 2014[/editline]
This pretty much. What was it's meaning, in depth?

I shot video a in Sneaky Pete’s as an experiment to see if it is possible to get a usable image in a club environment. The logistics of hiring a club, lighting it, filling it with extras to get an image and atmosphere that are inherently unnatural didn’t appeal to me and I wanted the rich palette of colours and a realistic atmosphere from the crowd. Video can be viewed here I decided last minute however I could develop an idea I had a while ago, where the primary source was a kebab shop in Glasgow. The shop interior hasn’t changed since the early 90s and has seen generations of Glaswegian clubgoers handing over £6.50 for a sub-standard mix of doner and pitta bread. The shop is very white and worn inside and the image of two people leaving their school prom with the bright and colourful dresses to sit eating chips contrasting against their dull surroundings appealed to me. However, I liked the suburban aesthetic and decided to shoot in my suburbs of Glasgow. The locations were chosen to be anywhere, but familiar. For anyone with an upbringing around these parts the set design is designed to remind them of their primary school parties, the low budget atmosphere with silver streamers and christmas lights. I wanted to take the viewers back to when they were in this situation.
i came up with the idea when i was talking to a friend almost a year ago, and we wanted to film a whole conversatonal scene in best kebab, but in the end we were like fuck because it was way too much hassle and since i wasn't allowed dialogue it was v. difficult to do it without it being a music video. so i did the best i could, put effort into the sound design and produced what you saw. For more on what the shoot itself was like, see here.

I was just testing out a new editing program with this. It was a sloppy work done with an Ipod. I need to buy a camera and tripod and then I will as much more effort into it. Hey, check out my channel to see what it looks like to go from absolute noob, to a bit more skilled over time. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmEzRE1Uk_qWW-2yGa0LErw Start from the beginning, and work your way through my videos. You'll notice the dramatic change in just about everything there is to filmmaking. You can literally see my progress. Now, I don't think I'm great, but I do know I love film making. I got started with an over priced camera, a crappy mic, and some friends who were willing to sacrifice a summer for me. I didn't know a thing, but I jumped in feet first. Best decision ever when it came to making films. I never made anything official (except for the WANTED swede). Everything I made was either just for fun, or to teach myself and my crew something new. Like this one, I made this one purely to test out my ability to choreograph a fight scene.

I called him out on it after a while, and his explanation as that "I aint saying any french words in my classroom" so glad that I no longer have him, and he left my previous school, so my little brother doesn't have to deal with him.
a filmmaking thread would be p cool but this thread was executed badly 0/10
Hey, film student here. I'll be starting my senior year of college in a few days and will be working on my thesis film for the rest of the year. I can post photos and other info from my thesis film once I start shooting, if you guys want. I'd like to help push this thread in the right direction and help it grow. Here's some of my most recent work, in case anybody is interested: Also, here's a really good resource for those of you who are interested in cinematography or just getting started. It's some really basic stuff, but I think it'd be useful.
Best Kebab really is best Kebab. 10/10 took all my money during freshers. Seriously though, anyone one visiting Glasgow, avoid that place at all costs. [editline]1st September 2014[/editline] On topic, OP seems to be dreaming. Reminds me of when I was 12. Reading through the posts I was beginning to think 12 year old me had somehow got a time machine and got a lot worse at English. The way things are going the thread should just die, the kid seems pretty clueless despite thinking he knows everything. Hate to be blunt but just throwing my two pence in. I'm certainly no filmmaker either, I considered studying it but I can't quite remember why I didn't follow through. The only thing I've done is help shoot a few scenes and do some crappy After Effects animation. Before that it was just early-teen me going mental with plugins and getting to grips with basic principles of VFX. Doing Game Art now but I'm hoping to get into the film industry doing VFX or modelling later on in life.

I don't think you will find a high level film-maker here. Unless you decide to step out of your house.
I don't think you will find a high level film-maker here. Unless you decide to step out of your house.
Wow, fuck you man. This forum is full of talented people. Oh wait you joined because of the JLAW leaks, get the fuck out. [editline]4th September 2014[/editline] I take that back, you're cropping up in almost every thread I go to. It's nice to see your joint in. However the credibility of your claim is still undermined by the fact you've only been here a day.
Wanna make a cheap and good movie, give a camera to some thugs and tell them to do crazy shit, edit it and make a documentary. Some guy did this (well the thugs gave him the tapes first) and made millions.
