Readjusting ourselves back onto the rail, although what he did was horrible it's probably not a good thing that he's dead. Forcing him to stare at a concrete ceiling and eat gruel every day for years and years until he eventually dies anyway would be a far more suitable punishment.
That said, some prisons should be about rehabilitation, some should be about punishment, and some should be about both.

That would be torture. Psychological torture can be far, far more painful and tedious than anything you can do physically to the human body. Also I'm sorry for partly derailing your thread.
I hate how fragile life is. I've never had someone I closely knew die yet but the thought that they can be gone in an instance is depressing. I'm sorry for your lost.
