DoDon't know much since I'm kinda new, I would just say make sure it fights the song and is in the right scale.
This is the melodic minor scale, used in classical music. This can be used to good effect but for mainstream metal you'll want to stick with the more contemporary minor scales.
Well I'm not writing any basic mainstream metal :v:

Fight the song?
To OP: Don't be concerned about this whole putting feeling into music stuff quite yet. Do it if you can, but what should come first is your technique, because without it, you won't be able to play cleanly.
I disagree,
Technical skills should only improve your solos, not actually make them.
I don't know if you've ever heard someone say 'play from your heart and not your head', but it's really what you should do. Solos that rely on technical skill sound souless and broken. Kinda like this one.
The solo is arguably the most important part of any song, and it should match the pace and feeling of the song.
Listen to some Pink Floyd songs and you'll know what I mean.
Huh? Did I say anything about making a purely technical solo? He said he couldn't play a solo fast or slow, which means more practice.
I do like solos with emotion put into them, they catch my eye more, but that doesn't mean I don't like solos that don't really have emotion to them. It's all music, and if it sounds good, it sounds good. Also, songs can have shreding in them that is pretty complimentary to it, for instance: For the Love of God by Steve Vai.
Also, I enjoy Pink Floyd way too much.

Sorry, really wasn't paying attention. fits* the song. My bad, just me on a bad day.
So Hakita what style are you writing in?
I'd be happy to give some of my favourite scales/ideas for that style?

Actually, I have no idea. :v:
Theres a song somewhere in this thread where I posted a song. You should listen to that and try to find out.
Just improvise.

Well, I guess it was pretty cool when he started making noises, but all the time he was actually playing the guitar it just sounded like wankery to me
Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap rocks out. This is from the comedy movie , This is Spinal Tap.
Oh :v:
I didn't see it because it was in media tags
Just remember if you're going to shred, do it tastefully, make it fit the solo and the song as a whole and not sound like you threw it in to show off.
Also, think carefully about PHRASING. This is where many solos fail.
Also if there is a particular motif in the song consider reiterating it in the solo. Naive idiots will say that you're uncreative and just copying other parts of the song but just ignore them.
Oh :v:

How have you never seen Spinal Tap? Go watch it now.

I thought the violin would have made it obvious.
But I just assume everyone's seen Spinal Tap anyway. Why the hell haven't you?

Kinda reminds me of anhilator, generally map out your riffs two octaves higher and mess around with those notes. I also recommend
E 12 13 15 16
B 12 14 15
G 12 13 15 The diminished scale
D 12 14 15
A 13 14 16
E 12 13 15 16
E 12 13 16
B 12 13 15
G 13 14 The Phyrgian Dominant mode, used by dimebag in the
D 12 14 15 domination solo.
A 12 14 15
E 12 13 16
Both of these sound exotic but are much more interesting for metal than regular minor scales

Wow...I mean I've never seen it either but I at least know what it is, and a couple of the references...
What :v:
And, to ensure this thread does not derail entirely, I learnt playing solos by improvising A LOT over the pentatonic minor scale, and then adding notes as I saw fit.
