A better business model is making a shitty business model go out of business, what are we going to do
Netflix and steam: the death of redbox
Hollywood Video closed down near me, and then Raley's got a Redbox, and I've used it ever since.
Maybe not, a big problem with the redboxes are that they are constantly out of popular movies. They'll have to place more machines, costing more money, whereas a rental store can just order more copies.
I think he has digital distribution on mind.
Redbox! = cancer
op! = Hyperbole
Redbox: the wal-mart of movie rentals.
Redbox isn't the sole cause of the death of video rental. Netflix put a pretty big dent in their business too.
The Blockbuster near me is doing fine even though they have a Redbox right next door.
There was a Hollywood video that went out of business near me too! where do you live?
Now that I think about it you are right. There won't be that many places to get older movies because of Redbox.

I feel your pain OP, close to me there was a Game Crazy in partnership with Hollywood Video. A few weeks ago there was a big sign on Hollywood Video saying that they were closing and everything had discounts. Since Game Crazy was partnered with Hollywood they also closed too. Now the closest game store where I bought console games is gone. The only place closer is Best Buy and Gamespot which are both in a mall which I rarely go to now and is also a lot further away than Game Crazy.
OP do you live in South Dakota?
Also on a related note just use one of those pre-paid credit cards with only $1 left on it and rent a movie from the Redbox machine and keep it.

This is correct.

But...but their RED Boxes
Another "Oh Fuck" came out of my dry raspy lips as i saw that they were having an out of business sale.
Maybe they're having a sale on chapstick! It sounds like you could use some.
Protip: Put blank cd's in the redbox cases when you return.
My friend did it once. It worked.
I remember Hollywood video from back in the 90's in San Clemente.
Redbox, for those of you who do not know of them, here is a brief description.

Ahh yes, look, it looks quite friendly. Yet deep inside that box is cancer, a growing force of evil that kills anything it contacts. You can rent a movie, for 1$. It is 1$ each night until 25 nights, then it stops charging you.
Now, we get to the story of redbox and its plight. For those of you in big cities, this most likely does not apply to you. As soon as I figured out what redbox's were, I admit, I used them a few times. But later into it, I noticed that quite a lot of people were saying "Why go rent a movie when i can get one for 1$." This logic was quite reasonable, but I still contained a deep foreboding danger at it.
Fast forward a few weeks, pun intended. Later into the week I went to the local movie rental store, which also had game rentals called Hollywood video. I went in and noticed the store was emptier than the darkest pit of hell, and the owner looked quite dreary. I rented a movie and moved on.
Now a few weeks later, While driving around town i noticed that hollywood video had a big OUT OF BUSINESS sign upon the door. "Oh fuck" I said to myself. Where else could i rent older movies, season dvd's of tv shows, new games to check them out to see if I am interested in buying!
Needless to say I was quite exasperated, but fear not because there was another store called "Movie Gallery" I drove across the other side of town, and saw the building. Another "Oh Fuck" came out of my dry raspy lips as i saw that they were having an out of business sale.
Needless to say, redbox is an evil creeping cancer upon movies stores, dominating them in drones of horrible evil boxes. They have shut down all the movie rental stores within 30 miles for me, and it fucking sucks.
It isn't just red box. It is a combination of things, people use netflicks and other rental/streaming services. All these services defeat regular rentals because they have massive libraries of videos/shows/ect and all you do to watch them is click a button. I don't have to drive out, go find the movie - hell your not even guaranteed if it is in, It might be out.
I like Blockbuster. Hollywood Video was stupid enough to place their store right across from a Blockbuster and Hollywood went out of business within 3 years :v:
Redbox isn't evil, it's just that the brick-and-mortar rental store business model is obsolete now thanks to Netflix and other similar sites.
The Blockbuster near me closed down. I used to have a kickass rental store that was walking distance from my house but that closed down years ago as well. I don't know where to rent movies/games anymore.
Movie Gallery was the only Movie/Game Rental place here. Now its closing down. I'm sad.
The next closest place is a Blockbuster, but its 15 minutes away.
We have a Movie Gallery here where I live. The whole chain has gone under and is selling their stock at a discount, new or old. Its nice actually, but I hate to see it go under. The problem is, its the ONLY rental place around here, and I believe it'll be the last, unless Blockbuster comes in or something.
I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. You might know it as a huge-ass fucking city, right? Yeah well, they closed down all of the ~9 Hollywood Video stores except for one. In the whole city. And I've never seen a redbox movie rental anywhere, eather. I usually just stream movies off of netflix now, which was probably part of why they closed, but still makes me a bit sad.
It closed down hollywood video, and since a gamecrazy was combined with it, it closed down to.
Hollywood Video went bankrupt (or declared bankruptcy, whichever came first) which caused the closure of their stores, including Game Crazy and Movie Gallery, parent companies of Hollywood Video. 'Tis unfortunate, but, no one rents movies often anymore since you can get them through NetFlix, Amazon, and on demand.
Blockbuster combats the redbox by making their own blue box. I saw one at a local speedway.
Tom Fratelli? haha first thing I thought
