The sad thing is this is probably true. It's like with a lot of dumb reality TV shows, thousands of views from people who are "just watching it to laugh at how bad it is" generating mad dosh and fueling the thing that they supposedly hate.
I always find it really depressing how people can actually become more popular and successful with considerably less work by deliberately making something bad than they can by deliberately making something good.

You're fighting a master sniper. Why would you try and fight him in a situation in which he excels? If he specializes in long range combat, it's foolish to try and engage him. Sneaking up + shotgun in the back could be a viable alternative.
Then again it could be an open environment in which sneaking is impossible and getting into close range would be suicide. Depends.

if you read the manual to MGS2 it makes it very clear that there's an items menu and a weapons menu and also that rations are an item selected in the items menu
it even says when you select the ration in the items menu that you can press X to use now or simply equip for automatic usage.
or maybe he really cannot comprehend the fact that there are two in game stuff selection menus...

It's naive thinking, but I see what you're saying. The main issue with it is that it's harder to get to a long range person with a short range weapon, than it is for them to just shoot you.
