At first I was like "wait what is this supposed to be impressive?" and then he said "this is last gen" and I was blown away by the next gen wolves.
They were definitely wizards with the N64 and Xbox hardware, but c'mon, it's been 12 years. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason that we can't use even primitive fur effects or faked fur effects like we see on Conker there (which appears to be some really well placed textures with an alpha channel).
The real reason is that most devs aren't as smart and dedicated to detail as conker's devs though. Most devs don't want to partake in some crazy technical gymnastics just to get realistic detail on a character's fur themselves. Instead, they either don't do it or they rely on third party technology.
Ugh, I sure as hell hope these techniques aren't crippled with AMD cards. GPU-accelerated PhysX is Nvidia only. It's not like AMD cards can't handle it, the last gen HD7000 Radeon cards had greater compute power than the initial Geforce 600 series.
Wow, Nvidia really is squeezing AMD out of all of this. I don't want to see a monopoly market on GPU's as well as CPU's.. ...Here's to hoping AMD comes up with some cool shit and quickly.
AMD comes up with tons of great stuff, but they it available to everyone. TressFX runs on Geforce cards too. We really need a good OpenCL-based physics engine to come around. It seems Havok is adding GPU acceleration at least.

The "next gen" consoles are all using AMD APUs, if anything Nvidia is the one that is unfortunately being left a bit behind. Good thing they are awesome and make amazing stuff.
That's not fair, the people behind both Conker's games were technical wizards. They pulled off shit so ahead of their time.
Yeah, Live and Reloaded looked next-gen.

"Many publications and websites declared the graphics were the best on the Nintendo 64. Critics noted that the title featured a number of technical effects that were uncommon at the time, especially for an N64 game, such as dynamic shadowing, colored lighting, large areas with a long draw distance, no distance fog, detailed facial animations, lip syncing, and individually rendered fingers on some characters"
