Buy a Goliath Bird Eater spider. They are one of the biggest species in the world. They aren't poisonous or harmful. To be honest, they are fragile and weak. But still pretty cool pets. They look threatening, which is awesome, because you can hold them and scare people.

They're also expensive and high-maintenance compared to other species, and they're generally not easy to handle because while not overly aggressive, they are "skittish", meaning they tend to freak out and:
a) Run off of your hand, smashing into the floor and busting open like a rotten tomato, or
b) Potentially bite you with their inch-long fangs.
A cheaper, more docile yet still quite large species to start with would be the Chaco Golden Knee:
