I took Melatonin to sleep, this is why i can stay awake for days... @_@
Out of everything, I used to take Xanax, though that shit was addicting, even in the smallest doses.
Alright guys, I'm back! I was on vacation and it seems I've missed about 600+ posts. I'll disregard everything before this page so we can keep up-to-date and for me to be able to answer all your questions.
Oh jeez, my Mom was reading Wikipedia and thinks I have it even though I only meet about half the symptoms.
Tell your mom she's not a damn doctor.
Well after reading the symptoms on wikipedia I found that I don't have it, which takes me back to square one I guess
Wikipedia is not a damn doctor.
But you said doctors won't test me because I'm not young enough
Bullshit.
Most awkward 30 seconds of the month for me yesterday. I was browsing through Best Buy after biking there (Huge mall/shopping area nearby), After a while of walking around looking at laptops one of the guys working there stopped in front of me asking me a bunch of questions like "Oh, you were looking at video cards over there, are you a gamer? what games you like? I'm a gamer too. Lets talk about gaming." I stumbled for what seemed like a minute, I said some really bad lie like I was in a hurry or that my ride is here or something and I waltzed out of there.
Seriously. You'd expect meeting other gamers in public would be a neat thing, it's really not ;_;
You can be elderly and be diagnosed with aspergers. It effects all ages, there is no 'getting rid' or it.
I was once in a pizza joint and I heard some of the employees talking about CoD or some shit and how he's a PS3 gamer (master-race bullshit) and I convinced him to get Saints Row 3 instead of MW3 this year.
They'll "test" you for it at pretty much any age (test is a terrible word, you aren't having bloods taken), but you'll probably need to see a psychologist or similar for them to evaluate you. Go and ask your GP would be my advice.
Actually in certain universities around the world (mainly US/UK) they can test your DNA for traces of Autism.
So true. My mom convinced me of having anger management problems cos I used to blow up all the time, even though I was just pissed cos my parents were the fun police :P
Maybe you have GAD, you can never be too sure. I certainly do.
One thing I wonder with all conditions like this, is if I met you in the street one day and chatted to you for 30 minutes, would I be able to tell you had aspergers?
If not, how long does it take peopel to realise? Do you generally have to tell people?
I can *usually* tell if people have Aspergers, but there has been some occasions where I'm wrong. It's really a hard thing to talk about for it doesn't effect you at all other than some (small) social problems.
[editline]3rd August 2011[/editline]
I never really liked how people assume people with aspergers are more intelligent or whatever than others on average.
I'm sure if people abandoned most of their social life and focused on one or two subjects, they'd be just as good at them. I could be a goddamn genius with straight A's in college but quite frankly, I don't give enough shits to do so. It simply seems dumb to say "I do better in school therefore I am more intelligent." Grades don't mean anything other than how much of a shit you give. If anything, interacting effectively in social situations is part of intelligence.
I 99% agree.
I had the same thing, it could take me 1-2 hours to get to sleep sometimes when i was little (10-15 yrs), it was ridiculous, so for awhile I had to take sleeping meds, but since I was 16, I didn't take them anymore, and I finally could sleep fine without them.
I've yet to take meds but it takes me a while to sleep as well. As I said a few (5-10) pages back: the disorders are parallel to eachother, they are not one in the same. It's just they occur more commonly together.
Psychologists are idiots and tend to pull shit out of their arse. See what I did there? People with Asperger's tend to be forced in to situations where they will get a higher IQ rather than anything else.
Actually what you've just said is bullshit. Psychologists are like any profession and usually they rely on actual studies that have been performed (as in science, motherfucker). People with Aspergers are parallel with high IQ's, so there is some truth to it.
Now guys, there has been some talk about removing Aspergers as a part of Autism for a while due to the mass over-diagnosis being performed. When parents stop being worryful fucks and the amount of people diagnosed with it decreases it will be added back again. At least that's what I've heard from my brother, who's a professor.
i also have autism! i was diagnosed at a young age by my mom and it's proven true ever since. unfortunately my social skills aren't too sharp but i get along with other autistic kids very well, and i do have an uncanny ability to count things (i love counting, and i've heard that counting is a symptom of autism!) and i am very good at drawing. of course drawing isn't something that many kids with autism have so i take my talent very proudly

It's funny because everyone who has ever stuttered around an 'informed' mother has been 'diagnosed' with severe, crippling autism by the end of that day.

Unlikely. I don't get pissed off/worried about stuff THAT easily, and certainly not where it is undue.

I don't see how having Asperger's makes someone an expert on the matter. We all have nerves, don't we? Raise your hand neurologists! Exactly. I've been diagnosed with Asperger's: it's NOT something to be proud of. I'm -- on a social scale -- a complete failure. As far as "high IQ" goes: this is relative.
Every normal, healthy person can very well learn and know all the things I know or do. Everyone that's interested in the same things as I am can get better at them than I am. The only reason not everyone is up to the same par about mathematics, languages or flipping nuclear medicine is because not everyone cares (to know) about those subjects: just as I couldn't care less about parties or social interaction.
Ask yourself this: is someone who scores better on Trivial Pursuit but is totally shit in a social situation really that much of a 'genius'? As my good friend Alby once said: "All's relative."
Do people with Asperger's take offense to things easily?

thing is, people with AS generally research their condition (i know that if I had it, i certainly would), thus making them more informed of AS than most of the population, who don't research it.
Do people with Asperger's take offense to things easily?
Depends who. Remember, Autism is a SpETruM.
Anyone wanna answer the question I asked a few posts up?

I understand that people with aspergers or other kinds of autism tend to be on edge when certain things around them happen. Does this happen with you? If so, what does it feel like? And why do those things put you on edge?
I don't mean to be offensive at all, I'm just curious.

Does this happen with you?
You think all goes perfectly well until something unscheduled comes along: anxiety time.
Does this not count as an answer? Per example: The parents tell me that we'll be going to a barbecue next Sunday. I did not know => "what" -> Having the feeling my entire year has been ruined.
So my little brother is 11 turning 12 and me and my family are convinced her has Aspergers. Im just wondering what are some signs that i should be looking for to notice if he has Aspergers or not?

Take him to a doctor who's qualified to diagnose Asperger's. If we're to give you a list of (probably inaccurate or to vaguely described) symptoms, we could as well help you diagnose him with scurvy or a case of light radiation sickness.
Of course!

Weak: Math, Math and Math
Strong: Language and Science
How come you are weak at math, but strong at science? Those two subjects are very close together, as you use a lot of math in science.

Yes and no. I find myself in the same boat. I think we can agree that chemistry and physics boil down to applied maths. Understanding the abstractions of atoms, nuclear fission etc: no problem. Representing or doing actual mathematical work with them? "blow me"
My sister has Aspergers Syndrome, high functional Autism. She is very gifted in drawing, and video editing. With me, her brother and mother being therapists, kinda makes it easy on her, that we know how to deal with her. All in all, I know some of the downfalls, because I of course have some of them too, I am dyslexic.

I understand that... I am a therapist, and I have major trouble with math, simple math. But complex ideas about how the brain works, and functions, how we process input and out put, NO PROBLEM. Also, I was a concert pianist for much of my high-school life. The brain is a weird, complex and amazing thing!!
I'm resurrecting this thread because I recently found out that I had been diagnosed with Asperger's several years ago. I didn't find out until a couple of weeks ago, my mom had been telling my doctors I had it without even telling me. I personally don't believe I have Asperger's, because I only have about one sign of it. The only thing I show is social awkwardness and obsession, but it's only that, awkwardness. My social issues are very mild and nothing serious, I'm just the shy type. I was very disappointed in my mother for blaming my flaws on a medical condition that I don't have.
I recently found out that I had been diagnosed with Asperger's several years ago.
Not really recently then?
Also, my mum did this, i was diagnosed with Dyslexia aswell as AS just because i was a little behind with my spelling.

No. I was diagnosed several years ago. But my mom had hidden it from me. I just found out recently.
I apparently have Aspergers. I've never let it "get in my way" or anything and I pretty much ignore it; it is supposedly the cause of my ease of distraction. When I was younger my mom tried a bunch of crap, ranging from a tablespoon of cod liver oil each morning (the omega-3 shit was supposed to help but it just sounds like a witch doctor's cure) to straight-up pills like concerta. All of it did jack shit, which is why I think that these days, children tend to be overdiagnosed with all sorts of crap when all they have is simple hyperactivity or distractedness. That's not to say there aren't people for whom it is a problem, but for someone like me who is so far over on the spectrum that I am for all intents and purposes normal and was yet diagnosed with this, there's no need for any kind of medical intervention.
My brother has aspergers.
He's fat, lazy, and plays minecraft a lot.
Other than that he's more or less normal
All posters with aspergers,
Hit me with your favorite things to do in school. (not subject wise. Talking about switching classes and such. What you do to pass the time.)
Hit me with your best facts about the topic you are most interested in.
Do teachers give you "benefits"?
Worst fear?

What I do to pass the time? MINECRAFT HURPA DURP. That's off topic, though. But I could see myself playing it, whether or not I had Asperger's.
Seriously though. I just talk a bit with friends, get a drink, some food. Yeah.
Best facts about the topic I'm most interested in? Question hazy, try again later
I don't get benefits and I don't want 'em.
Heights.
