daijitsu, used a tripod?
Look at what I found near my house!

I like this picture. Something minimilistic about it...

tripod wasn't with me, so I pulled to the side of the road and rested the camera on top of my car, taking the picture on top. Here's the full shot to see what I was getting-

all the little green dots in the darkness were fireflies, they were ALL flickering in time with the lightning, it was amazing :buddy:
Is it weird that I'm slightly more interested in the dirt being illuminated by the headlights?
haha, yeah. The overall picture has its own interesting feel... for those who frequent the LMAO pictures... ORANGE AND BLUE :gonk:
it was only my parking lights, not the actual headlights. I'm just thankful a car didn't drive by and flash their brights on this shot, it would have ruined it like a few of the others I took.
OH, and I acquired my dad's old Pentax film SLR, and have two rolls of film (200 and 400 ASA). Time to try and fail :v:
Original picture is definitely more unique and interesting than the one above.
in which case, I'm uploading THAT to my flickr.
yeah, it does have its own feel. I cropped the storm up just for sake of being able to see it when I uploaded it to facebook for my friends v:v:v

Cells in cryovials just after being taken out of the liquid nitrogen flask. In those two containers there are mainly human embryonic stem cells. There are also HeLa cells, 1A3s (Generates Mouse anti-HeLa antibody in the supernatant, CHO cells (Chinese hamster ovary cells)
I'm thinking of trying to remove the metal holder in the foreground.
Did you take that with a mobile camera?

No, it's just a 100% crop of a picture that was underexposed and then corrected by a stop at middling ISO. I didn't get a chance to take a dedicated picture.

This was the original picture, from across the table. Not really creative or anything. Tried to get something nicer out of the snapshot.
I only just started photography like ... Today. I've always wanted to do it so I got myself a Nikon D3000.
Here is one of the first shots when I was playing around. It's of one of my pet degus (I own 2 males.)

... I like this, I think, my favourite accident shot of my boyfriends legs. :D
Thank you dalach. <3
I really like that shot - the distant leaves almost look as if they were painted. Mind sharing whatever settings you had?

I haven't posted any of my pics for ages, so i'd like some C&C to see if i've gotten any better.
booster, awesome. The two posters above: I don't like how everyone makes their pictures more blueish.

Without a doubt, the creepiest sky I've ever seen. I made absolutely no changes to this image other than resizing it.
If you're just southwest of Chicago, you should be seeing this. Really a beautiful sight out of these storms we've had over the past few days.
I'm in north chicago. Just had a huuuuge "OH FUCK WHY'D I LEAVE MY CAMERA AT HOME" moment with the sunset. There was a smooth, high layer of clouds, and rough low-lying clouds. Everything felt sepia-toned at first, followed by vintage yellowed film. The clouds were ablaze with peach-pink colors, the open sky on the horizon was the most saturated cyan I've ever seen... and the chunky low clouds were casting looooong, eerie streaks across the sky above me.
It was absofuckinglutely awe inspiring.
I didn't think to even try my phone's camera until it was pretty much gone. :gonk:

it was a bit like this, but the sun was way below the horizon and the light was across the entire sky. I'd have had to do a panorama or something to get it all in scope.
Also, it was freaky in the fact that everything on the ground was pitch black, like there wasn't any light in the sky, despite the intense, vivid sky all around.
karlhungus: Wow they look straight out of a catalogue they're gorgeous.
Sorin: That is a pretty yet ominous sky.
daijitsu: I love the swirls of pink, it's like candy. :buddy:
I was trying to do night shots (without flash) so I don't have much to show minus this lamp outside my house:

Any tips on night photography would be great. I am trying to self learn but it's quite a lot to take in and it's making my head melt a bit. :v:

you could try doing long exposures? Or you could use a light-sensitive lens with like a 1.8 aperture so you wouldn't have to use flash or a high ISO.Depends on what camera you have, both Nikon and Canon(and others but I am not familiar with them) have a great 50mm 1.8 lens for like a hundred dollars.
if you use a compact camera then just don't bother with nightphotography
[editline]12:15PM[/editline]
Just saw you had a nikon d3000, go buy the nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens, it's great and you will use it alot. Don't bother with zoomlenses just yet. First learn the basics of composition by moving around your subject instead of zooming.
Some pictures I took a few months ago in the woods a few miles from where I live. I'd only just got my SLR and accidentally zoomed while taking a picture, thought it looked pretty cool (and dazzling) and took some more.

That looks rad.
Seriously those are like seizure educing, awesome effect.
Reminds me of the effect when you look at one of those optical illusions.

Thanks. When I look at them full screen it literally makes my head go weird.

Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. The only lens I have is the stock lens right now that came with it I think it's a 18-55mm VR lens. I need to use my tripod more as my hands are shaky and with the long exposure my images kept getting too blurry as it felt like I was waiting a life time.
I'll look about at prices of that nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens in the UK and save up. The camera itself took the rest of my spare cash though I should be getting more soon from a software job I recently did. Mostly now all I have been doing is shooting everything with my camera and testing angles and where to stand for the shot I guess I'll continue on with that for now whilst I am still getting use to it. It's my first time using a none "point and shoot" regular digital camera. I absolutely love DSLR cameras now and am converted.
Thank you again. Rated heart. :buddy:
Also, for close ups obviously even in Macro Mode the camera struggles to gain focus. I take it the Macro Mode still needs a decent Macro lens?
Keep in mind that the 50mm 1.8 will not focus on your camera, the D3000 doesn't have a auto-focus motor.
When i was looking to buy a prime, I did my research and found that the 35mm 1.8 is the cheapest you can buy that still has auto focus.
You should look into that, or the 50mm 1.4
