Oh here some I did earlier that day. [img_thumb]http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/borisjake/snowbirds.png[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/borisjake/snowtree.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/borisjake/DSC_0174.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/borisjake/bridgenstuff.png[/img_thumb]
I've already seen a ton of improvement in the several days you've been posting here. Keep it up. Edit: Completely unrelated rant; I hate those people who play the flickr 'numbers game' with generic flattery comments to get people to view their shit. It's irritating. They take horrible photos and end up with hundreds of comments from the people that didn't realize it was spam. I'm sure some of them (spammers) are even delusional enough to believe the insane amount of attention to reflect their 'skill' as a photographer. :Dawkins102:

You can never post too much here. I'll be completely honest though the close up of the kissing is a little, awkward.
You can never post too much here. I'll be completely honest though the close up of the kissing is a little, awkward.
i know, i know. lol ill remove it. [editline]8th December 2010[/editline] i liked it because it shows how happy my parents are. and its the holidays. so its like a plus. eh, i see what you're saying though haha.
normally when I see people saying "I love all the pictures in the thread, they are so inspiring" I think "Oh, yeah, they are talking about daijatsu and bopie" but then I realised (I think) that people are including me in those statements. so to all of you complementing this thread, THANKYOU! if that isn't the case you can forward your alternate opinions to spam@haslehurst.net [editline]9th December 2010[/editline] (that is a valid email address by the way, and I will likely read the messages that get sent there eventually)
People in this subforum are actually nice and helpful, which is the polar opposite to the rest of Facepunch pretty much.
Yeah, when I say stuff like that it also includes you. - I still find it weird that you insist on shooting in film, but it really doesn't matter, cause your pictures are goddamn hot. [editline]9th December 2010[/editline]
People in this subforum are actually nice and helpful, which is the polar opposite to the rest of Facepunch pretty much.
True.
Second post with any content here, first was when I got my 1000d. I have a 550d now with the 50mm 1.8. Loving everything so far, and I'm sure I'll love them even more when I improve to a point of being completely satisfied with my pictures. http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245961622/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245956482/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245958772/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245958474/ C&C is greatly welcome. I know the framing is a bit weird in a couple shots and at least one is slightly off focus (on my flickr anyways). I posted what I think is the best few. Looking for tips. Lots and lots of tips.
Yeah, when I say stuff like that it also includes you. - I still find it weird that you insist on shooting in film, but it really doesn't matter, cause your pictures are goddamn hot.
my opinions on film are here http://haslehurst.net/2010/11/film-vs-digital-photography/ it's a biased opinion because I think film is cool, but hopefully it will give a reasonable explanation. also my SLR is mine so I can use it whenever I want, "my" DSLR is borrowed from school so I have to "plan in advance" when I want to use it. [editline]9th December 2010[/editline] here goes some feedback squish: http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245961622/ I like the composition and the shallow depth of field, however I think that with the santas an the side of the cake as the subject the need to be better lit as the brighter top of the cake draws the eye away. http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245956482/ despite being a fairly generic and overdone shot (hey, this was my bread and butter for the first few months :P) I think you have done a decent job at it. what could be interesting is if you used a tripod, clamped down the aperture to say F36 and got the entire lamp post in sharp focus. http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245958772/ this photo definitely looks nice, however I feel that it suffers from not having a clearly defined subject. the blue disk in the foreground looks to be the subject but the the bokeh in the background is more interesting, creating conflict. http://www.flickr.com/photos/steven_quinn/5245958474/ I think that this one is overexposed, maybe pull it back a stop or so. Also if you have photoshop tweaking the colours and making it slightly warmer would probably enhance the image. Finally I think that the DoF is unnecessarily shallow in this image and closing your aperture slightly could work in your favour. all in all your photos look to be of "DSLR beginner" standard and those were the types of images I was capturing maybe 6 months ago. as a question back to you how did you find my feedback? I tried my best and hopefully you have gotten something out of it!

I tried my best and hopefully you have gotten something out of it!
1st one: Thanks :) still working a lot on post processing, though I guess I could have done that with a simple graduated filter. 2nd: It took me a second look after I took the picture for me to recognize where I had seen the scene before, and I realize it is of a very popular concept. 3rd: Yeah, at the time I wanted to get the shot rather quick, so what I would have preferred to do is take the shot more from the left, so I could get a straighter perspective while at the same time giving some depth and showing off the colours on the left. Next time I'll try and tone it down in the background. 4th: Yeah, there's two versions of the picture, one was slightly underexposed and that was the other. I tried lowering the exposure on the one I posted which is where it stands now. Maybe raising it on the other would've been better? I think all of those four shots were taken on 1.8. I'm still trying to get better exposed shots without sacrificing some things. Thanks for everything :)
does anyone else love taking photos as much as they love editing it in lightroom/photoshop? I haven't gone out to take photos in so long now, i've just been editing old photos from time to time in lightroom. However i'm going up to Hunter's Valley (basically the wine country of here) in 2 weeks so i'm excited to start some photography again. I'm also starting my summer holidays this weekend so i'll motivate myself to go out more and take photos. my camera is starting to carry dust in my drawer. for now here's some old content.
does anyone else love taking photos as much as they love editing it in lightroom/photoshop?
for me actually I love going out to take photos and being outside, in "the world". I find editing enjoyable, but nowhere near how enjoyable it is to take photos.
normally when I see people saying "I love all the pictures in the thread, they are so inspiring" I think "Oh, yeah, they are talking about daijatsu and bopie" but then I realised (I think) that people are including me in those statements. so to all of you complementing this thread, THANKYOU!)
When I see people saying "I love all the pictures in the thread, they are so inspiring" I think "Oh, yeah, they are talking about everyone that's posted in this thread except me." But I've put some thought into it. One of the things I've learned about this thread, is that it doesn't necessarily 'take a lot to impress', but more that it goes unsaid, because it is assumed. It's like if you were at an art gallery and the artists spent the whole time going 'hey man you're artistic.' That's been established, so they spend their time critiquing and discussing finer aspects. If you ever notice someone posting an image dump in the general discussion, they'll get 30 or 50 artistic ratings with everyone asking 'omg dude what camera!' So when someone from the 'outside' wanders in, they have their minds blown by our collective skill. The attitude around here is not about how good you are, but what you can do to improve. It's about growth, rather than stagnant praise. Fun Fact: I joined FP for the mapping community 3 years ago, and left when I decided it wasn't for me. Since then I got into photography and remembered this thread and re-joined just for it. This is one of the few places out there where you have a group of people that are 'real' about photography. There's no bullshit flattery, and there's no 'putting down', at least without reasons behind it. Your grandma won't tell you your DOF is too shallow or that you have a bland composition, and few art teachers will know more than the book tells them.
People in this subforum are actually nice and helpful, which is the polar opposite to the rest of Facepunch pretty much.
We've had our share of drama around here, but in the end this is probably one of the most constructive environments on facepunch. :buddy:
I posted a few photos that were alright, and quite a few people liked em. They were just a test of film shit (woo, manual focus) Yeah, good thread unless George is posting
I agree with what bopie said, but I don't think it is limited just to the photography aspect. I think Creationism Corner is as a whole like that. The Art thread, the 3D thread, and then the various minor threads all have the same attitude as our thread. That being said I need to post more photos. I've just become lazy when it comes to posting.

yay for watermarks! I think that out of all the people that watermark their images Brian Storey (and whatever his FP name is) is the only person that a) does it well and b) has a reason to.
that first shot is intense
