Apparently ISO 6400 1/100 f/5.6 @ 200mm works pretty well with IS.
Thanks!
Hehe, I'm so giddy right now. Just took this shot.

Oh shit double rainbow!
Thanks!
Uh, you're welcome. Mileage may vary?
Is it all the way?
[editline]31st December 2010[/editline]
Damn ninja. Also you should be able to get sharp images at 200 mm with IS at 1/25...
Is it all the way?
Nah, it was only a half double rainbow, but a double rainbow nonetheless!

You can slightly see it in both pics

Not for me, too much noticeable movement compared to 1/100 for me.
Also it illuminates too much of the surrounding building etc so it'd distract from the fireworks. I'm guessing.

I suppose maybe the IS on that lens is only rated for two stops then?
Because going by the 1/(Focal length * Crop multiplier) rule, your focal length of 200mm should usually be sharp at a full stop of 1/500 (1/320, but there's no full stop which is at 1/320). Four stops down from 1/500 is 1/30.
Two stops would be 1/125 though, but I've got no idea what the kit lens is rated at.
Today was unseasonably warm and windy so I decided to give my new 50 1.4 a workout - just having fun with the girl.

I'm excited to branch out soon, I've got mutual friends that want to 'model' for me . It'll be a learning experience at the least.
finally calibrated my god damn monitor with some free software

im avoid buying any new lenses until i see what canon have planed for the lens refresh, first is the 24-70 which doesnt really interest me.
also i hope the 4k on 5dmk2, 7d,60d,550d rumor is true that would be fucking hardcore
Indeed.
Also I've heard rumors about a new 24-70mm with IS.
Probably going to be expensive as fucking shitnuggets though.

2 sec - f/7,1 - 95mm - ISO 200
Ignore the weird artifacts they are just products of my Canon EF 75-300mm MKII lens.
oh my fuck how am i gonna do this without a tripod
there quite good nice and colourful but i think firework shots look best from a distance. last time i took some they were pretty shit either because of a badly organised display or the weather lots of smoke built up ruining the shots

This was the equipment I used:
(Yes it's blurry I didn't bother to make sure it was steady because this isn't supposed to look good)

Shit "tripod" had quite some trouble holding my camera up.
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
It's fun though finding cheap or improvised ways to do stuff like this.
i think for a dslr a superclamp would be more useful than a gorrilapod style tripod
Well yes. I've also ordered a tripod just a couple days ago so it's heading my way soon enough.
Sucks not to have basic camera gear :argh:
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
(I kinda got the DSLR from my mom when she didn't want it anymore because it was actually hers, but she's not exactly a photographer or very interested, and she got it from my grandpa who gave it to her when he got a new camera because he's quite interested in photography)
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
Wow long sentence.
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
So yeah it came with no accessories. But why are we talking about this, pictures pictures pictures guys!
there quite good nice and colourful but i think firework shots look best from a distance.
yes get some landscape (or even better yet, people) in the picture because pictures of merely fireworks are a dime a dozen
WHY WONT BULB MODE WORK YOU COCK OF A CAMERA :psyduck:
You know you need a cable release to use bulb mode right?
It's one of my most used settings (taking most of my photos at night or in the dark it's necessary)
6 minute exposure - Taken it darkness with a little light shining through

52 project, bring it
did you do your with your phone?
if so, awesome
wow video mode where you can't see what you are filming and one you don't have enough resolution in your screen probably
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
i think for a dslr a superclamp would be more useful than a gorrilapod style tripod
Both are next to useless in most scenarios as you often don't have anything sensible to clamp it on - a small minitripod would be better.
you can get consumer level 4k displays already, why do you think youtube offers a 4k option
you can get consumer level 4k displays already, why do you think youtube offers a 4k option
they should make 1080p buffer within my lifetime first imho
just saying not very useful for regular users - 6 second time limit and the long writing after that, and the fact you can't see the display
i must live in the worst part of my town for fireworks, it was shit at bonfire night and i just took about 5 shots then gave up
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
i was under the impression it was third party like chdk, i imagine there are a huge number of dslr filmmakers who would be interested in the 4:2:2 colorspace, increased bitrate 1080p and if i understand that right buffering (no droped frames)
liveview doesnt work but you can still use hdmi out for one of those mini hdmi monitors
[editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
also i disagree on the usefulness of a superclamp the average town/city has plenty of shit you can clamp onto and they are small enough to go into a coat pocket

Yesterday it was 30 degrees out, today it hit 55, tomorrow is a high of 23. :raise:
also I think it's a stress-training excercise to work with friends who want to 'model' but have no idea what they're doing. One, you'll get practice working for clients if you start doing stuff like Senior Portraits or general glamor/whatever portraiture, since people still won't know what they're doing. Plus, it makes working with a professional(ish) model a thousand times easier once you're used to idiots who continually pose wonky.
what sort of gear do you use for the average portrait shoot? its something i have wanted to do but my only pretty friend doesn't like having her picture taken, i guess i should make more friends or take a portrait photoraphy course (as they will supply models) the first one is kind of hard as i am unsociable bastard

crop:
full-body: 35mm (or 24mm for scenery porn)
3/4-shoulders: 50mm
headshots: 85mm
full frame:
full-body: 50mm (or 35mm)
3/4-shoulders: 85mm
headshots: 135mm
then flashes as your budget dictates, which i cannot help you with
you can get away with just a 50mm and a nice time of day (or shady area really)
YMMV
