Well, the d3100 has the potential to be a good entry level camera, but it has the usual crippling in Nikon entry level cameras, so you can't use many lenses to their full pontential. Now I don't have a problem with not having autofocus, but trying to manually focus with the d3100's viewfinder will fucking kill you.
If you absolutely want to stick to that particular system, get your friend's D60 or search for any used Semi-Professional bodies from a couple years ago. You'll be trading ISO performance for lens compatibility, build quality, and durability.
Well that's what I'd do anyways.
just get a canon eos 550d kit
it's probably because of the split-toning which looks ridiculous
Nice feedback mate, that how you talk to everyone? personally I think you're wrong. The intention was to give a warming feel, almost sepia but not quite as strong. Comparing the original I think it gives it a much better look.

I said budget neighborhood of $600.

I'm not completely sure what you mean. D3100 does have autofocus if I remember correctly, and When I used a d3100 previously with a 50mm 1.8 prime it seemed to work well enough.

it has no screw drive so only AF-S lenses will autofocus. It's a fine camera anyways
and pretty much all the new lenses that nikon releases are AF-S including cheaper kit lenses
Not with all lenses. I seriously recommend getting an older body, maybe save money for a used d90 and some nice glass, but the d3100 really gets fucked in the ass by that little detail.
Also, a little technical question- do you know what are you going to shoot?
I don't really like the feel of Nikons. ESPECIALLY THE D3100. I hated the feel of it. Ugh. Just my opinion though
[editline]3rd January 2011[/editline]
Which is why I went for the Canon 550D or the T2i as it's called here.
I don't like their placement of the exp comp/aperture button
I just don't like of the feel of the grip at all.
nubs, it all depends on how it feels on your hand. If you need high iso performance and you don't mind not being able to look pro with a red traingle on your camera, for that price you could try a Pentax K-X and some sweet, classic Takumar glass.
Well I'll give it some more thought. Thanks for the help.

That's sorta what I was getting at...

save some cash, get this beast, it's a baby 7D

yes, i try to be direct instead of giving people the impression that their pictures are perfect and that they are ansel adams. if that offends you and you can't take the (very mild) criticism then maybe you should put me on your ignore list??
it looks they're walking through yellow snow. you know, the kind people have pissed in. if you want to split-tone, make it subtle. split-toning should make tints warmer and shades cooler. it should not make whites yellow and blacks blue.

The jump from 550D to 7D is still huge.
yes, but it's very close it its big brother

There's a different between direct and impolite. There's a reason it's called 'Constructive Critisim'
what you said wasn't helpful, it was just basically telling me you didn't like it. You didn't tell me how to improve. I wasn't aware it looked like piss. To me it looks like a lighter yellow, almost cream. But I am slightly colourblind so I can't be exact.

Off topic but please stop rating yourself. It like REALLY bothers me.

Seriously, check this shit out http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-D200-Camera-Body-Only-10-2-Megapixels-/250748281528?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item3a61c322b8
Unless you are shooting in an absolutely dark envoirment (which you can still compensate with fast lenses or flash), it's great bang for your buck, and you can get a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 for 200 bucks or less.

the d3100 with autofocus with the DX NIKKOR 35mm ƒ/1.8
I have a 50mm f/1.8 prime that I would be able to use with it.
w/e the d200 is more reliable in every aspect except high iso and he would probably have to upgrade sooner with a d3100 and spend more money upgrading a body rather than lenses
I dunno, I like my d3100 just fine. It's light and feels like a good starting point for me :|
in other news there's a thread for this ya know :o
Yeah I know, I'll take it over there. My bad. Thanks again for the help.
Went out to a funfair with a few friends with my 60D, should have some decent stuff to post.
it's a big fan :)

If I had a nicer camera it wouldn't look like total shit
:saddowns:
The poor thing must have just been killed, as there was steam still coming from his body. Some bastard sawed his rack of as well. I can't believe some people...
Took a few with some different angles, couldn't really pick a final. What do you guys think?

never ever blame your camera unless you are actually pushing its physical limitations - which you are not. also don't think that because you have a cheap camera your shots are instantly bad - which they are not
I don't care for the sunset shot since they're a dime a dozen. the colors are pretty but the foreground is not particularly interesting, if even a little ugly.
but the ones with the person staring off into the snow are pretty alright. I like the second one since there's a lot more depth to it. the fog in the far background works really well, too.
in this case it seems like including more of his body works better. there's something slightly unsettling about the way he's posed, or the way the shot is cropped around him, but I can't put my finger on it right now.
I think something that would really make the people shots shine is getting them right as the sun is beyond the horizon, so you get that lovely orange glow, but with an interesting foreground to match. also, you won't get the nasty lens flare from shooting directly at the sun.
