i disagree you might say thats because im a 550d owner but from what i have seen the 550 has almost the same/if not the same IQ, weather proofing can be achieved various ways on a non weather proof body (but even then you can get them quite wet).
i dont really think the improved build quality of the magnesium body (the improved heat dissipation when recording video can also be achieved on a 550, use a grip or a external power source and the heat from the discharging battery is kept away from the camera) and increased fps adds enough to justify the price.
i do love that quick control wheel
I prefer control wheels on the right hand grip, for shutter and aperture.
I like the idea of one doing aperture and one doing shutter... like on all good Canons

Here are some other reasons to consider the 7D instead:
Pentaprism, not pentamirror viewfinder. It's also bigger and 100% instead of 95%
Better ISO performance.
Higher shutter speed. (1/8000 available).
And the magnesium body does more than dissipate heat. It also feels more sturdy and takes more blows. You don't have to think about achieving dissipation of heat or weather proofing in other ways, and the increased FPS is there for a reason.
And as other people have said, that quick control wheel is lovely to have.
I'm not saying the 550D is bad, it's an extremely good camera and I'd agree on it being a baby 7D, but I also think the 7D price is very well justified compared to the 550D.
But that is only my opinion.

Remeber the dong bokeh thing? well, what if you did it by making the dong a circle? CIRCULAR BOKEH ON THE 1.8!
Just in relation to you guys talking about the differences in bodies, I would say using the T2i to get the job done is like taking a brick and hammering a nail. It works, but its not as precise in form or function. The 60D is more like a hammer then a brick. It seems smoother, faster and more of a joy to operate. You can see where I'm going.

its like using a cheap hammer, than a decent one from B&Q, and a 1D IV is a precision hammering device with 10 nails per second

You'll understand once you get used to using more pro bodies.

try using mirror lockup or a tripod (the former in the custom functions menu)

Yeah that's what I meant, but canons only have that wheel next to the screen and another single wheel on the grip.

I don't know about the newer ones, but my D200 has the aperture on the front dial and shutterspeed on the rear dial, both on the right.

Long time ago I almost got a D90 but opted for a cheaper Rebel at the last minute.

I wanted the D90 when I saw Ajacks had one. I went to the Ritz Camera and I loved it. I think we go through phases. I wanted a D90, then I wanted a canon 7D, then a Sony A55, then a D200. I'm happy with my choice.
