Fuck off, he's learning. It's an incremental improvement but he's getting somewhere. Ratings don't really matter, but be encouraging.

Shoot a bunch of shots in sport and all the other modes in a bunch of scenarios with different light, and check the settings that were automatically selected, then take the ones that come out best full screen and use those settings in those light conditions in one of the manual modes.
Learn to shoot in M, Av and P modes.
This was the best and most intuitive way I went from using the more automatic modes, to most of the time using full manual and usually getting good images the first time and learning about f-stops and such.
As for shot composition, I feel generally dissatisfied when I look at it because I feel like i'm missing out most of the subject (the handle). Your shot composition will improve over time.
Colours in the image are a little bit unsavoury too.
start with P and work on your composition & focus first.

Whoa slow down there, no need for that, I wanted to say it's still soft, without posting.

My apologies. Still, getting a red X on your photo when you're a beginner can be a bit discouraging.
My apologies. Still, getting a red X on your photo when you're a beginner can be a bit discouraging.
nah, doesn't bother me too much, I did a lot of video work in the garrys mod video section for 2 and a half years. It was a flame fest and the idea of C&C didn't even exist practically.
My apologies. Still, getting a red X on your photo when you're a beginner can be a bit discouraging.
It's not criticism.
If someone asks if they've improved, and all the get is a disagree, it's not exactly constructive.
That was my point.
My apologies. Still, getting a red X on your photo when you're a beginner can be a bit discouraging.
Hey Bopie, quick question. Do you consider photography entirely of a hobby, or are you planning a career path in that area? Please don't take it in the wrong way :P I'm just asking.
If someone asks if they've improved, and all the get is a disagree, it's not exactly constructive.

You're talking as if it's impossible for improvement not to happen in every photo.
When learning as a new photographer, you're going to experiment a lot, the photos taken while experimenting could come out worse than what you've taken before, but you learn from that.
In this case, he asked if it was an improvement, in my opinion it was more of the same, so I disagreed. There's no ascending scale of disagreement in the ratings on FP, just disagree.
I should have told him the opposite of what I thought so he learns zero, to keep you happy.
i think you guys shouldn't be getting so worked up about it..
Do you consider photography entirely of a hobby, or are you planning a career path in that area?
Career. Why?
in my opinion it was more of the same, so I disagreed.
Then say that, don't leave an ambiguous rating for people to make assumptions on. We can avoid these misunderstandings.
Career. Why?
The investments you've made in it. I was just wondering what kind of stuff is taking it too far in terms of a hobby.
never ever blame your camera unless you are actually pushing its physical limitations - which you are not. also don't think that because you have a cheap camera your shots are instantly bad - which they are not
I don't care for the sunset shot since they're a dime a dozen. the colors are pretty but the foreground is not particularly interesting, if even a little ugly.
but the ones with the person staring off into the snow are pretty alright. I like the second one since there's a lot more depth to it. the fog in the far background works really well, too.
in this case it seems like including more of his body works better. there's something slightly unsettling about the way he's posed, or the way the shot is cropped around him, but I can't put my finger on it right now.
I think something that would really make the people shots shine is getting them right as the sun is beyond the horizon, so you get that lovely orange glow, but with an interesting foreground to match. also, you won't get the nasty lens flare from shooting directly at the sun.
thanks a lot for the feedback.
The person is actually my six year old cousin, and he is a she too.
I agree with you on the point with the camera but I seriously think I could get some shots a lot better if I had a better one. I'm not talking about these three particular shots but yeah
Thanks again, I really appreciate it

Just so you know, the camera is an Canon IXUS 80 IS. It's pretty much an all-around simple compact camera without any particular fancy features (except for the macro feature), but it takes some really nice pictures in some environments

I have been meaning to get a DSLR camera because I am simply fed up with the limitations with a compact one, but I'm not sure at all which one to get for a decent price.

Bird that was outside my window at the lovely hour of 9AM.
thumb'd for hugeness.
The investments you've made in it. I was just wondering what kind of stuff is taking it too far in terms of a hobby.
No such thing as taking it too far if you really love it.
Yeah, I mean the cheapest most basic go-kart will set you back £3000 before you even start and you need a licence and still have to pay to compete in racing seasons. Maintenance costs mean you'd be looking at paying around £8k a year for your basic go-karting.
Still considered a hobby by a lot of people though and that has far less chance of continuity than something like photography, which you can do all your life. Also if you were considering a career, you'd have far less chance to make any money out of karting.
Photography is probably one of the least expensive hobbies in the long run because once you've got a decent camera and lenses, there's no running costs except for the occasional new equipment which is still cheap in proportion (£1500 every year or so).
Straight off the camera.

First of all I will say to you, you need to relax a bit. What's up with your comment about the split-toning?? Seriously! That wasn't constructive at all.
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/IMG_5982.png[/img_thumb]
Anyways. You said this picture had a boring and ugly foreground. Sometimes you have to look at a picture for more than 5 seconds. In this case you didn't notice the lines and the shapes in this.
This is what I think of it:
First of all fantastic capture! When I look at it I start to think of life and death. The foreground reminds me of a graveyard. Especially the cross-like shapes to the left and the thing in the bottom could easily be a tombstone.
Maybe it's a tad underexposed. Try turn it a LITTLE bit up to get some detail in the foreground!
Anyways GREAT shot!
and mrcsb.. Welcome to the thread.
Yeah, seriously. This is the best thread on fp, cause everyone is friendly against each other. Don't fucking change that.
He's talking to everybody. Including mrcsb, roll_program too...
I was talking to everyone, aswell.
- C'mon guys, where is the love? :h:
It snowed (yesterday, now probably all going to melt off today) so i made a few ~~~PaN0rAmazZ~~~

i have more picture but need to check them, most are high iso because of the shitty lighting
What's up with your comment about the split-toning?? Seriously! That wasn't constructive at all.
actually it was pretty damn constructive, i said it looked "ridiculous". if you are the sensible type instead of an overreacter who thinks people are out to shit on your artwork, you see that i am not actually criticizing the photo, but am merely saying the split toning is far too intense (which it was). since the guy took offense i clarified.
and mrcsb.. Welcome to the thread.
uhhh... what? I've been here for a while.

apparently being friendly means never actually being critical, got it.
it's possible to be friendly and critical (which i was) but apparently you people don't understand that so whatever
maybe i should never be critical and tell everyone that their holiday snapshots are works of art so nobody ever improves because they're already ~perfect~

Have a dark, grainy and mysterious evening!
Anyone here into astrophotography?
It's not particularly creative but I love it on a clear night :D
I'll post some shots I've done later if anyone is interested.

i thought this was one of the engines from the rainhill trials so i climbed through a barrier to get a decent phot, turns out it wasnt, they did have a novelty replica sitting in a easy to photograph location but it looked so stupid i didnt bother
You guys won't believe what I just got for free. A Canon Rebel Ti with a 28-90mm lens. and some extra film.
