Bored out of my mind in this house. Everything is snowed in and the roads are too icy to actually drive my new car around in (I've only driven it once :argh:)

I need to get one of those external flash thingy-ma-bobs
Do you guys have any tips for working with flash?
I got a 580ex ii (Mentioned in earlier pages) for Christmas and I've been playing around with it alittle bit. Last week I picked up a light stand, umbrella adapter, and a 43 inch umbrella.
What is the Flash Zoom used for?
Whats the little plastic bit that flips down onto the front of the flash?
How do I balance Ambient light with the flash using a wireless trigger? (No TTL, Using Manual.)
What are some really cool effects I can do to start me off?
and any other kind of things you wish too add/necessary info.
Thanks!

Cool!
What is the Flash Zoom used for?
Flash zoom controls a small lens inside the flash head. It's adjusted depending on the focal length of the lens you have on the camera, to make sure that the flash fills the whole frame but no more, so that no light and thus no power is wasted.
Whats the little plastic bit that flips down onto the front of the flash?
Well, I'm not exactly sure about your 580, I think they have two, one is a reflector and the other is a diffuser, but on my 430 there's only one bit of plastic and it's a special diffuser for wide angle lenses (14mm)
How do I balance Ambient light with the flash using a wireless trigger? (No TTL, Using Manual.)
Set the camera to manual, make sure that shutter speed is no faster than 1/200. Adjust either flash power, shutter speed, aperture, or ISO.

And regarding effects, well, I'd recommend reading http://strobist.blogspot.com/ for ideas!
Thanks Uber|nooB!
I haven't been out on a shoot for fucking ages... :(
I might go out today, but I have to go into college later so I dunno.
[editline]blah[/editline]
I also wanna do more astrophotography, but ideally it needs to be a day where I don't have to be up the next morning.
Tomorrow night may do.

But I forgot to check battery before I went outside.
Great!

Do you just have 1 battery for it?
I still only have one battery for my camera. Always have done.

my z-70 has lasted 3 months so far on the same battery :smug: most estimates say that it'll last around a year.

I don't know where to put this but here's a little clip that I shot today and took about 10 minutes editing

twixtor for the slow motion and synthetic aperture: color finesse 2 for the color grading.
Anyone know how to get rid of purple fringes on very high contrast pictures?
This is a 100% crop from my 50mm 1.8
[img_thumb]http://bbrks.me/IMG_3883.jpg[/img_thumb]
It doesn't even happen all the time, and I'm shooting without a filter on, so
chromatic aberration my friend.
I got around 280$ I want to spend on a flash (Canon 450D/Rebel XSi), any suggestions?
I'm also purchasing the Canon 50mm 1.8 lense (Super cheap, but I've read it's a good fun lense :D)
I'm a complete fool when it comes to flashes. I only know that the 580EX is rather expensive and really good. (That's my experience :v:) But I really don't know what to look for. Help?
twixtor for the slow motion and synthetic aperture: color finesse 2 for the color grading.
Twixtor is so fun to mess around with. I need a good color grading plug-in/program though. Might give that one a try. I tried Magic Bullet Looks a while back but couldn't escape the "stopped working" messages.
I just found SA:CF installed on after effects, might have come with a plugin pack. It feels like lightroom for video with all of your levels / curves adjustments.
I've been exploring after effects recently. All these plugins and whatnot sound great. I've seen twixtor used before its amazing.

0:42 I like how its used more subtly.

I shall check it out.
Ive been using AAE for 2-3 years now, since CS2. I was interested in vfx long before photography and it comes in handy a lot. The first t2i video on my YouTube channel (not composed the best but eh) utilizes Twixtor. I wanted to test it out in rl footage as I've never had anything that takes remotely decent video.
My friend showed me the photography thread here like 6 months ago, in July, and it itself entirely inspired me to get into it. I love it a lot now even if I'm still new and have a lot to learn/build on. The 3d thread here also inspired me to learn 3rd max (used c4d before and still do), I only used facepunch once before for something about Forza, now im on creationism corner every day and have no interests in browsing other forums.
..
If you made it through that, I must owe you some sort of award. Can't believe I rambled on that long. Just needed to get shit out.

A. Like a boss. But really this is an area that takes practice. lots of practice.
Q. What are some really cool effects I can do to start me off?
A. Use it as a Rim light while using 3-5pm sunlight as a main light and cross light your subject.
A2. Use it with a colored transparent film to add a color to a normally dull white background.
A3. Use it to shoot event photography. Clubs etc.
A4. Use it bounced onto a wall or with a Lumiquest 80/20 attachment to get nice clean event shots in rooms with white or reflective ceilings
Q. Any other kind of things you wish too add/necessary info.
A. Experiement with bouncing off a wall into your subject etc. Look into the Strobist group on flickr and the onelight/onestrobe pony groups. Lots of information to get you started on there.[/release]
