Just ran outside for a quick couple shots. Sadly I realized afterwards that my lens had a big smudge on it and the lens flare looked bad.
This was the only decent one out of the bunch.

What are some tips for shooting at a show in a very small venue (think 200 people)? I'm thinking I'm just going to pack my 50mm 1.8 and pump up the iso. I'm guessing there aren't many secrets.
The obvious would be wide angle as well, but if you don't have anything wide and fast, the 50 1.8 will do better than any consumer zoom.
I was barely pulling out shots at a concert from my 500D and 8mm fisheye - ISO 12800 at 3.5

mirrored image is what you are used to seeing etc

I've also heard something about all the minuscule muscle movements people subconsciously make when they see their reflection to make themselves look better.

Then take a photo of yourself in the mirror....

Yeah closest wide angle is on my 18-105, but that shit does not perform well in the dark. Ugh, I'm also scared to lug around too much stuff. I'm worried something is going to get damaged or lost. Oh well, as bad as it may be, my stuff is all relatively cheap so as long as the body stays intact I won't cry too much :v:
Also as far as looking in the mirror, I always thought it had to do with the subconscious. You automatically impose almost a "self image" while looking in the mirror. Hell I think I look pretty damn sharp, but then I see photographs of myself and think, "damn who's this ugly motherfucker?"
Guys, is there a way to trigger a pop-up (hot shoe?) flash separately from the camera? I am wanting to do some highspeed photography but I really dont want to buy a proper flash till I have to :/

Second shot was a crop off the first. It was much too cold to have my hands out for a couple more shots. Windchill was like -16C or something. CC would be much appreciated again!
Personally shots like that look empty to me because it's just a background. There needs to be a more 'dynamic' subject. not that my own shots above on this page are perfect, but imagine how much more bland and uninteresting they would be if no one was in them. And I'm not saying you need people, just something to give the composition a focal point that isn't 'flattened' in with the background.
Well, thank you very much for the help! :buddy:
Bopie, what are you using to scan the film?
Churning through film like something that churns through film for a living.

Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated :)
Loving all this use of film. Nothing beats the charm of a good film shot.

I find something so moving about the imperfection in film that I cannot bring myself to PP it in any way.

Roll- editing in raw? Use noise reduction both with grain and color, it may look unnaturally smooth at first. Then go find the tool to add noise/grain back in. It makes the picture look natural with just a bit of grain on top.

Did, it was hard, the picture was already underexposed and had to lighten it up quite a bit in post.

Exposure comp up to 2-3, hold very still, Av mode, auto ISO.
Exposure comp up to 2-3, hold very still, Av mode, auto ISO.
Disagree with auto ISO; agree with exposure comp.
Av mode: Set the ISO as high as you can tolerate, set your aperture, and let the camera decide the shutter speed.
I should elaborate on why not to use auto ISO. the camera will turn it down to something retarded like 400 leaving you to deal with an unusably slow shutter speed.
Yeah thanks. In the end I decided against bringing my camera into the place. There was absolutely no lighting at all besides some christmas lights. Not to mention I was kinda in the back and the stage wasn't elevated.
Actually the venue was total shit. The sound was way too loud and muddy, you couldn't hear anything clearly, it was ultra dark, filled with people I typically don't associate with (nothing wrong with that, but I just felt out of place), and the actual location was really run down. It was still a fun night with friends, but the actual concert component was pretty poor.
Slowly building the audacity to approach strangers and ask for their photos (a-la Sartorialist).
It'll be for my new site (50mil.net).
Also Bopie, can I get your feedback on my car picture, you're an awesome dude and I like your feedback.

Seems a little tight for a whole-car shot. You need more room between the car and the border if you want to capture it's 'character'. Right now it's kinda in between what would constitute a detail shot and a full body shot. If your site is about the cars themselves, its more than adequate, but if it's showcasing the photography of cars, you'll need to focus () more on the artistic side. Getting more of the car's surroundings in frame gives the viewer a better sense of the car's 'presence' - even if the surroundings have absolutely no relation to the car in question.
That's just my 2 cents I've picked up from hanging around bike photogs, if you want to learn from someone better observe/talk to our own Ferosso. I believe he's the one with the Honda photoshoot thread.
Also, just a personal nit-pick; you've already got your name on the license plate, get rid of that watermark.
I really like bopie. Him and Ajacks are my favorite people on the internet.
On a related note, I am to soon be obtaining my first 50mm 1.4, it's a manual focus M42 mount but I think it will suit me well considering I can only go up to 3.5 on my kit lens.

that went better than I expected from the title.

Awesome, thanks!
Site is, in essence, my life in photos, I'll be throwing up tons of event pics, street photography and fashion shoots organized by date and with a name, newest at the top.
I'll use this as a sort of portfolio and give out cards to people I meet whom I think meet the bill, anyone who goes onto the site will receive a full assortment of my work with some recent pics taken from newest albums recently displayed at the top and be able to flick through every best photo I've taken and all my event stuff.
I'll start off free and eventually start charging. I can't think of a better way for a portfolio to be displayed than that.

Photographs evoke feelings from an individual through a static medium.
So yes, I think photography is as much credible as an art form as any other.
Life is art, is life.
