Security was all over the damn place. Every time one of them passed by I had to hide my camera to my side so they didn't see it. And some people were actually trying to get me in trouble for bringing the camera to the concert. [editline]04:35AM[/editline] Anyways, I need to get a new lens and stop using my kit lens. It's not really preferred for portrait shots at all because the barrel distortion on it is pretty extreme for closeup shots. Any good lenses you guys can recommend me?
What mount you running, good sir?
What mount you running, good sir?
Canon XSI, with the 18 to 55 kit lens. For a while now I actually made the mistake of shooting at 18 for closeup shots, kind of a dumb thing to do. Even at 55 it's still kind of bad.

For portraits id recommend the 50mm f/1.8 It's only $100 so you wont break the bank. If you want a good general purpose zoom id say either the 28-135 USM IS, or the 28-105 3.5-4.5USM Really though that 18-55, especially with IS isn't that bad.
Ah, thanks for the recommendation. It isn't bad at 55, but seeing as how I've been doing closeups at 18 I've felt like a total dunce ever since.
Ah, thanks for the recommendation. It isn't bad at 55, but seeing as how I've been doing closeups at 18 I've felt like a total dunce ever since.
Lol what makes you say that? Closeups at 18 give you a wider aperture.
Lol what makes you say that? Closeups at 18 give you a wider aperture.
True, but it makes people look kind of funny at the distances I've been taking pics of them at. [editline]04:54AM[/editline] And I forgot to mention the funny shots are when I do head shots.

[editline]04:54AM[/editline] And I forgot to mention the funny shots are when I do head shots.
Can you upload a sample? Content One of the first shots I took with my 8mm wide
At 37mm: At 18mm: Even though she's smiling in the 18mm one you can tell her eyes are kind of farther apart and her nose appears to be longer and slightly wider. And her face is kind of stretched out a bit, weird stuff. But this isn't as bad as some of the stuff I usually get with other people. I usually get a bit closer when taking the picture. And the result ends up much worse. I don't think this example really proves my point well enough though, I'll try to find some other pics and post them tomorrow.
I think it has to do with how at shorter focal lengths things have more depth to them (broader depth of field) and longer focal lengths produce a shallow depth of field which tends to flatten things out a bit. Here's an example. These were taken from the same height. but at different distances. i tried to make them camera the same size in both shots but i figure its close enough. You can see alot more of the wood surface in the shorter focal length than you can in the longer.
anyone got one of those cheapo fisheye adapters you can get on ebay? if so what are they like? thought about getting a lomo but couldnt be arsed with film

If anyone here hasn't seen the thread, I'm working up a contest for the arts section. Probably [obviously] going to cover photography during the first round, along with 3D stuff. Offering access to my legit key to Topaz Labs' photoshop suite of tools. Look into it, try it out, well worth trying to get. Notably it works great at masking, removing grain whilst preserving details, sharpening detail that's overlooked by other programs, removing heavy JPG artifacts, and good filter-raping for sketch and cartoon shading styles. :holy: and an example I've already used it for, a quick snapshot of this car. It was underexposed and I not only managed to recover it, but I balanced it out more to the liking of an HDR (without the halo rape) and streamlined the details on the car. Holy shit that looks awesome, now I know how some people can get those amazing detailed shots.

that looks like a nice set of filters but $180 is a bit outrageous (but not as bad as some PS plugins) and they dont even seem to include a lightroom plugin which imo ought to be standard today if your trying to charge that price for a plugin.
a couple of weekends ago i got to use a friend's dslr for an afternoon. here's a fair few i thought were decent. I am currently working on a Steadicam Merlin-like design: It's on a very tight budget but I hope to finish it tonight.
Just bought a 50mm F/1.4
Working on a photobook using blurb.com. Here's a page of a trip my girlfriend and I took to a place called House on the Rock: warning: MASSIVE image http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/8940/photowall.jpg
What do you guys think?
I love me some bokeh
Just bought a 50mm F/1.4
What for lol [editline]08:30PM[/editline]
What do you guys think?
bigger borders, more saturation, make it a bit more darker, and add a huge signature too [editline]08:32PM[/editline] jk its good but get rid of the borders unless you want to find your camera at the bottom of the ocean
211/365: I was going to try something more complicated but gave up.
is that a camdapter on the bottom of your 5D?
That looks more like a tripod quick release plate.
Dunno how to edit this one really, second link is an attempt. Any input? [editline]05:00PM[/editline] fucking around with colors some more
The second one is just revolting, 3rd one is somewhat good, but the guy doesn't really "come out" of the picture, and is a bit too light. Very good colour and I like the grain though. I like the original the best, and I feel that the CB and exposure is pretty much perfect with it. (And I'd leave a bit more to the right side of the image, the crop is just too tight) Here is what I made in 2 mins, nothing special, but just to show that you can make a layer of the dude and then adjust the background separately - good for special effect like this art-shit posterize I applied. And removed few spots and adjusted the crop while at it lol.
I see what you're going for but in your edit it feels like you made him a little bit too separated from the background. Feels too fake to me.
Or make him sing the national anthem for all I care [editline]08:02PM[/editline]
I see what you're going for but in your edit it feels like you made him a little bit too separated from the background. Feels too fake to me.
Yes I just threw the posterize in, like I said it was a quick one. And photos aren't supposed to look "real", that's what the eyes are for. Just not to fuck the sliders in every way until you need eyebleach.
Chuckled at the national anthem one [editline]08:56PM[/editline] Think I'm going to keep this version, made the singer pop out more while retaining the interesting color
