I wanna get some good BMX pics infact, I'll upload a sequence I took a couple months ago. [editline]derp[/editline] here we go. it's 4.5mb or so, sorry.

how did you edit these? It looks awesome.
evilking, congrats on the 365 mate. how much did you pay for the 14mm?
Is the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM, a good lense? I don't know what lense I need though. Just general photography.
Is the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM, a good lense? I don't know what lense I need though. Just general photography.
it's fairly well regarded but not a very fast lens so it won't be much good indoors if you want a really good kit lens replacement get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (maybe 18-50 I dunno)
Is the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM, a good lense? I don't know what lense I need though. Just general photography.
You've hit the nail on the head. Go for the 50 1.8 if you want a cheap alternative. It's not a zoom, but it's the most bang for your buck for a 'walk around' lens. They go for $100 and you'll find that you can take a high percentage of desired shots with it. I also suggest the 28-135 IS USM if you want a little more zoom. But seriously, the 17-85 gives you about as much range as you could need.
ff-midrange-zooms have a crappy focal lenght area with 1.6x cameras. [editline]08:35AM[/editline]
evilking, congrats on the 365 mate. how much did you pay for the 14mm?
A bit under 300€
Is the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM, a good lense? I don't know what lense I need though. Just general photography.
Best lens to buy is still a 50mm 1.8. You get a very sharp lens for like a hundred dollars. If you want a travel lens then something like the 28-105/28-135 will be your lens(you could even look into a Sigma 18-200 but all of these lenses will not give you the sharpness or speed of the 50mm 1.8) So it depends on your budget and if you prefer quality over quantitiy
how did you edit these? It looks awesome.
Hey, I used the selective coloring. Started by desurating the pic, then making the blacks blue.
I am going on a walk and see if I can get some nice pics.
Yes / No? Help. Alot of noise, I know :saddowns: & bad focus & a little shaky. But is it 'more interesting'
Well you got the basics of composition down. It's just that it's a boring picture because of the boring subject. How to improve? Well obviously get rid of the bad focus and noise(noise reduction can be done in photoshop or other noise reduction programs like Noise Ninja) and find a better subject.
To be honest, plant photography is completely uninteresting. It's just too easy from a technical standpoint to get 'good looking' shots. Anyone can pick up a camera and hold it up close to a flower. I see it on facebook all the time. I refuse to take serious pictures of plants. Not trying to sound cocky, but I can literally go out and find a flower and take a picture of it that blows most of the stuff I see on girls fbook's out of the water. Took these 10 minutes ago for this post and I'm not even a good photographer. I'm sure there are many out there who can take much more masterful shots, much quicker. In your photo, the subject is camouflaged with the background. nothing stands out. Also, as you said, softness and noise. Off topic, here's 9/365
I'll take that in mind, thank you  The hardest part for me right now is finding a good subject. And is it better to manual focus than auto focus? I do have a keen eye so it shouldn't be a problem. And I really appreciate the time that you take on answering me, like taking pictures of flowers.
Yeah don't let what I said hurt your ego or anything. Just keep shooting and you'll find stuff. Quick suggestion for playing around; I spent alot of time taking pictures of different color gatorade bottles infront of light sources when I was learning, it's great practice.
is it better to manual focus than auto focus? I do have a keen eye so it shouldn't be a problem.
It's good practice, but it's better to let autofocus handle things. the only time I shoot manual is when the AF won't focus on what I want it to, or its too dark. That is, if you have a quality lens with a fast motor and a good AF system in your camera. Some lenses don't have AF, so it's a good skill to have anyway.
My camera is a bit weird when it's dark, it shoots the flash like 6 times in a row really fast. I don't know if it's my camera going insane or if it's just so get a more clear look? probably the latter. And I just found out the 17-85 lens I asked about is pretty pricy.. But I should probably just save some money for it.
That's the 'autofocus assist beam'. It lights up the area briefly so the AF can have a chance to focus. You can turn this off if you go into the custom functions menu. Don't get the 17-85 then, get the 50 1.8, it is a much better choice for general shooting and it's cheap.
Oh that's good to know, thanks, I though I had tweaked something I shouldn't have on my camera :v: I've never really been that much into photography, but last sunday the 1000D was on sale, and I had the money for both that and a laptop so I thought why now get into it now.. But damn, all these lenses are confusing. I'll think about the 50mm, but I would really like a zoom function. Telephoto is not needed, but I would still like zoom if needed in some cases.
I would really like a zoom function.
Legs. No but really, the fixed focal length lenses offer a much sharper image with better low light sensitivity. and don't worry about how overwhelmingly confusing lenses are, you'll figure it all out if you stick with photog. The 50 1.8 is a better choice than a zoom because the 18-55 only goes down to 5.6 (at 55mm). Also, lenses with 'L' after the fstop number (i.e. f/2.8L) are 'luxury' are provide extremely sharp results even when shot wide open. Extremely expensive though. This is what I'm shooting with until I can get some better glass. I picked one up used at my local camera shop for $80. I think amazon has them new for $200-$250, and used, probably a lot cheaper. It get's the job done and has a good range with acceptable sharpness for general shooting, and the price tag isn't that bad. if you do get this lens, pick up a lens hood for it. $20 well spent. Edit: Amazon has them used from $205. Make sure if you buy elsewhere to get the USM version. If you get the other 28 105 that's much cheaper, you will be disappointed with the quality.
What are the benefits of a lens hood? Is it only for protection? Also I think I'll get the 50mm, but I still have to see if there is any other choice. I'll maybe go to a camera store, I don't know if they will show me how lenses are though.
I'm not sure how the colors come out on different monitors but I had a bit of a problem with one of my monitors color profile. Lens hood keeps glare off the surface of the lens by blocking out of frame light sources from directly shining on it. 50 1.8. You'll thank me. Take the shops suggestions lightly, though. Most places base their information off of what suits the 45 year old woman buying a camera for her trip to Hawaii. They'll tell you anything to make the sale.
Is there any way to get the old flickr page back? I fuckign hate the new sizes
50 1.8. You'll thank me.
I wholeheartedly recommend this. You might think the fixed focal length is a downside, but trust me, the lens makes up for that in every other area. It's actually really awesome to have to move around to frame your shot (of still subjects) and it makes you a more dynamic photographer. It's my favorite lens and probably has the most usage time out of all my lenses. It's also incredibly cheap, sharp, and has killer depth of field. You can't go wrong with the 50mm 1.8. I also lied about it being my favorite lens, I just got my 1969 Nikkor 55mm 2.8 Macro. It's now my new favorite lens. Some content.
Seems like that will be what I buy :) thanks alot for the help guys
Just posting in support of buying the 50mm f/1.8. I got it as my first lens and it was amazing, and still is. The depth of field you can get on it is orgasmic. I would say a bunch of reasons why it's good but Edthefirst has already said it all.
