DoF is really a function that comes with a camera though. I wouldn't say it's cheating. But filters on photoshop is sort of like cheating I guess. It really all depends on what you're doing. Using something far too much gets boring though
agreed. DoF is great when it's called for, but things like that shouldn't become a staple of your work. Same goes for post-processing like split-toning or turning everything black and white just so it looks "more artistic".

well, in some rare occasions, it can actually go along with the photo. For instance, i was messing with the monochrome settings on the rebel xs and i took this shot of my mom drinking lemonaide.

If the cup didnt have an "old" art style to it, the monochrome would look stupid. (in my opinion)
am i wrong?

I think if you're good enough and fully developed as a photographer, those things could be considered part of one's 'style'. It would be like telling Beck to stop using drum machines.
I do agree though, there are post processing techniques that are over used improperly.
Do you guys have advice for cleaning a sensor?
I have this one bit of dust on there and shooting at f22 makes it really noticeable :(
I want something cheap, but willing to spend money if I have to.
and just so I contribute something, here's a picture I took of a power thing on a hike the other day. Shot with my Sony nex 5

Those sensor swabs work brilliantly, Just get 5 or more cause you're likely to use a few on the first try.
where would I buy a sensor swab? I know they have them on Amazon but I'd rather have one now as opposed to later
Shit I'd just take it to get cleaned. It doesn't cost more than 50 bucks I reckon. I'm too big of a pussy to clean my sensor out by myself.
Yeah, I know, fake film effect, but just a quick snap on my girlfriend's phone:

Would be better without the film effect, imho.

I don't know if it's possible in that place, but you should totally get a sunset photo in that same location. The orange sky with those powerlines as a Silhouette, it'd look amazing.

The aliasing + the ground/grass makes it look like a screenshot.

The fact that he accomplished making the image look like it has been post-processed well but in reality its just his good photography skills.

you mean the lighting was just right? I don't imagine he has control over the moon and clouds.
photography is about vision, not about the means.
furthermore, his camera has already done post-processing for him in its RAW->JPG conversion. if he shoots in RAW then his RAW converter PPed it for him.
if he shot on film, then the film and chemicals used would also contribute to what is "SOOC". to hold the attitude that there is some deserved element of pride that is to come with SOOC pictures merely for them being so is incredibly arrogant.
let me just add :jerkbag: to my post to reflect my arrogance

Take a step back, man. You're completely over-analyzing what's going on. He got an interesting result, and people are letting him know.
If I use your same logic, then someone using strobes has no control of the photons and how they react with different energy levels in the atomic structures of the flash element and the materials they reflect off of, therefore their photographic skills should be completely thrown out the window because they don't exist - because they didn't invent the universe.
You're the arrogant one. You're being overly technical and displaying a self-appointed authority.
The point that was being made is that he didn't change anything the camera gave him, he didn't have to fuck with faux-HDR, brightness, contrast, curves etc. It's what the camera gave him. He didn't have to rely on crazy photoshop effects to get an interesting image, he did it with nothing but the camera. That's something to be proud of.
And for future reference, post processing is called post processing because it occurs after you process the image, it doesn't refer to initially processing an image.

God I love this thread. I've learned more here then I probably would or have learned in any art/photography class, not to mention some of the pictures on here are incredible, and seeing some people (including myself) improving all the time is just incredible.
Now exiting lala-land.

I found out what the problem was, but thanks alot!
the 'inside' of the wrist on the closer hand should probably be filled in to give it some thickness, it looks funky cut out like that.

haha, I'm gettin' there.
Looks pretty snazzy, though there's just a little glare obstructing the color of the board. Maybe moving the light a bit to the right so it doesn't hit mid-board with its reflection? :buddy:
But I'm not that good at photoshop, to make it look realistic. Otherwise it would look like total shit and the I would rather keep the inside of the wrist away. But you're right. It would look much better.
