When Persona 3 Movie #1: Spring of Birth gets released on DVD and english subbed, you should take the chance to watch it.
Akira is a strange beast because its actually gritty cyberpunk movie.
Cyberpunk hit it big in Japan but for the most part, the famous ones of the time were like Bubblegum Crisis which had some of the Cyberpunk stuff, but it was too colorful for the setting. Ghost in the Shell is the closest you'll get to Akira.
There are other minor and shorter animations.

I don't know much else when it comes to Cyberpunk. You're going to have to dig find the good stuff, just like with Western Cyberpunk.
Reading wise, I suggest [I]Friday[/I] by Robert Heinlein and [I]Do Androids Sleep Of Electric Sleep?[/I] by Philip K. Dick.
Western side of things, you wanna look at Bladerunner as the pinnacle of Cyberpunk.
Cyberpunk is a strange genre, because it had an effect on how we view the world, but because it tends to have off shoots and even sperated into its own subgenres such as Tech Noir, CyberApacolpyse...that kind of stuff. Finding pure Cyberpunk is difficult.
