A rating has to be given two times before it shows up. So your rating won't be shown before someone else rates the post the same. It's to avoid rating spam and discussion around the spam.

You guys, instaban was mainly for saying words like nigger, overused memes like stick it in her pooper or over 9000. You would only be instabanned othertimes when you lost 5000 smartness in one post. Smartness really set up who was mature enough and probably trust. Would you trust your account with someone who had - smartness, low + smartness or high + smartness. It mainly kept away the retards and this forum was pretty good. When i first joined in 07 it was pretty good, i did not really know what the smartness was, and when i looked at my post i saw -17 or something. I would ask questions and actually get responses unlike now. Then i got banned because i got pissed off one day and lost 7540 smartness in one post. When i would ask a question or make a thread now i would be greeted with LOL FUNNE XD from some people, some good responses and possibly responses that would be greeted by a ban, like kill him, blow up his car and the likes. Now facepunch, it was never removed, it was never installed. We got a forum change and garry went to his trouble to get ratings back and everyone still complained about the new forums.
I can't say that he's very far off with his assessment.
OP I think all your points apply to pretty much every forum. There are a lot of moderators and gold members here, some of which take the internet way too seriously and just act like complete cunts in general. But for the most part its good people here.
Btw it wasn't always better. For instance I would get autobanned back in the day for typing "btw" or "wtf" and the forums were run in a much more nazi-type way. I think the only way its gotten worse is because of increased numbers of 12 year olds starting stupid threads.

The only problem with smartness and instaban is that there would be threads dedicated to tricking newer members into posting ban words or spamming smartness losing words, like there use to be

I see your point, but it also may even be helpful for them. Seeing as it would point out where errors are in their text. This would simply alert the user to the fact the word is spelt incorrectly, and give them a chance to correct it, thus educating the user further in the English language.
And I never mentioned anything about a insta-ban because of mis-spelt words. That would be stupid.

Did he really deserve to be banned? He criticized the forum, when a critic goes after a book or a movie, he doesn't get kicked out of the theater. The OP just pointed out what was wrong so that we could fix it as a community.

Autobans for misspelling words, getting banned because you forgot to put a question mark in the right place, someone getting banned every 5 minutes for making a grammar mistake.
This forum was run in a completely ridiculous way back then and its improved a lot actually. Mods were on complete power trips banning people left and right for making the slightest spelling mistake, like every time you posted you had to worry about getting crushed by some mod's massive epenis.
The only way its gotten worse is because of higher population which leads to higher amounts of little kids, which leads to higher amounts of dumb threads/posts. Basically everything else has improved.

The forums are much, much friendlier than they used to be. Honestly I don't think they can be compared to 05 anymore though, because at that time all that was really discussed was Gmod, general gaming and Valve.
The forums have improved significantly in that time
